The Zed bumper is made of thin plastic.

Im probably going to design... design #4 to finish.

Bumper covers are typically made of either polyurethane or polypropylene, both are injection molded. With vacuum forming you will only be able to make a flimsy part with no lips. Stock bumper covers are not thin, in some places they are up to 1/4" thick. I am trying to tell you that you are failing and fiberglass is your only option. Bring me a credit card and the car and I can have your parts in 2 weeks.

I still have to research as to how thick or solid I can shape parts to.

:werd: lets make car parts out of plastic thinner than a human hair... FYI a human hair is .003/.005. i think red heads have thicker than that though :gotme

Maybe I can embed plastic pieces into the fiberglass kit, this way not only will it be solid, but if a low impact accident happened, the original shape could be contained.

wrong. He said two-hundredths (.02); not two thousandths (.002).

I have strong aluminum cutouts already embedded in the corners of the bumper and its much more solid then the surrounding parts... plastic could be something to experiment with in the future.

Here I highlighted the kit sections that I will make with fiberglass for now.

Hi Sandman, the kits is coming along slow but steady, and Im pretty happy with the results so far.
I hope to see your car finish one day too :bigthumb:

They lace fiberglass with kevlar, maybe placing plastic panels in-between has also been done, could do wonders for impacts.

Here is a grill right over the beam and its shocks... no more fearing bumper damage when parallel parked :)

For the most part, it's already been done by some guy in Cali. Vig ripped the design from him.

FRP = Fiber Reinforced Plastic. That would be your best material to make a bumper.

And if you don't know, 0.02" thick is not thick enough for a bumper.

But I do love this thread :bigthumb:

Thanks I will have to look that up, I think its also possible that a thick sheet of plastic could be heated and reshaped also, not just thin sheets.

I made a time line of my planned projects, I changed that rear end slightly and still plan on doing it.

Maybe the vents in the concept but all the other parts copied are pretty generic.

Vig.... FRP is just a generic name for the composite polymer process. Whether poly or epoxy, glass fiber, kevlar or carbon fiber, its the same process.

I see, one example would be like how the Twinz members had rubber resin in their fiberglass bumper kits to give it flex.

lulz. the website is about as complete as your car :P
to be honest, I'm in a state of suspense regarding your project. not because I'm interested in your design itself but more because I want to see if you can actually sell any of them. I, like most, am guessing you're not going to make enough to compensate for the amount of money/time you've put into the venture, but I would like to see you do well with it. at least make it worth your time.

I've been following your thread from the very start, and to be honest I'm quite disappointed in the direction you took the design (so far). originally you were talking about making a "modern" 300zx. but I'm having trouble seeing any resemblance to a z32 in your design as it stands now (excluding the parts that are incomplete). I think the front of the car looks more like an Aston Martin than anything.

anywhoo, best of luck in finishing your project, vig. and, if you do ever get it completed, I wish you luck in marketing & sales as well.

^^^ A lot kinder than my assessment after also lightly watching over the years.
So many different renditions of cars that look little/nothing like the Z32... :gotme

Even if I dont sell one, I still think it was worth two years of my life. First because it opened my eye to a new career, making replicas, and secondly because I think I will have a cool looking car without spending an enormous amount of money to have one.

Definitely, Aston's iconic grill really makes the design its own, but its just perfect of all the grill shapes Ive rendered. It not only looks aggressive (mean) but also happy depending on the way you look at it.
I think the cars overall bubbly shape does kinda of resemble the z240 and new 350z's DNA but I agree, it doesnt look like what a new z32 should look like and I think its mostly to do with the grill design.

:bigthumb: So you have reached the height of Z owner ship, the next logical step would be to put that crazy Vigor body kit on it and win trophies at ricer competitions... oh and lets not forget the hour glass show girls who attend these meets. :naughty:
In-fact I think you should skip next semester for a country wide car show run, I know I would if I could :patriot:

You definitely should, it would be nice to take some comparison photos too. I hate to give myself a deadline... which I usually break... but I think the car should be on the road before mid January.
