so people finally understand the reason people run stretched tires (80% of the time, the performance benefit is on the side), i have decided to actually take pictures and explain it step by step.

first off, you have your normal ride height, which for me is low to begin with.notice if you had a boxy tire (ie a 255/40 or a 265...this is a 235/40), it would already be hitting the fender.

then as the tire moves up, it starts to camber in which wouldnt happen if it was correct size tires.and then

now at this point (picture 4) its completely compressed as far as it can go without hitting the inner fender (methinks...i didnt look too hard)

and ESPECIALLY here you can see where the clearance is soo important, its almost dead on with my offsets (i need to go about 5-7mm lower offset though)

clearance to the rear bumper seam

and inside the wheel well tucked up

and the end result new ride height

front still needs to go down a bit but that isnt covered in this

HOW THINGS WORK!!!!!

i hope you learned something today

i don't understand.

why not just use a more narrow wheel or something with a slightly hgher offset? as it stands right now, the wheel itself sticks out past the fender.

so a 9.5 wheel with a non-stretched tire with a little more negative camber wouldn't achieve the same results?

noit wouldntthen it would be sunken as it sits, and sink even morewhen you dropped it madlyand the tire would hit the fender, bumper mount, and who knows what else as it ascends

ditto. i'm more a fan of the "euro" look anyways with the wheels tucked just slightly inside the fender.

i guess in the end, the only solution to avoid stretching is to not slam the car so low.

Um, how does tire size affect how the suspension cambers in when compressed?

you dont HAVE to stretch your tires

-dial in more negative camber-Dont slam it so much-roll/pull fenders-get wide fenders - if you MUST run such wide rims, why not get wide fenders to match-get a better fit wheel/offset for flushness, and so the rim doesnt stick out PAST the body...

what you gonna do when all that rim sticking out gets a mighty case of curb rash?

wider tires on a skinnier wheel will also help with the illusion of flushness

*edit - also take a look at my sig... Im running 225's on a 8in wide rim in the rear. If i had strait camber the fender would be sitting on the tire.

but due to the fact im running negative camber, and the fact that the suspension cambers in (more negative camber) when compressed the tire tucks in behind the fender quite nicely while under acceleration or in a corner.

I'm not a huge fan of stretch but it is somewhat necessary and when done correctly it looks good and can be benifical.

I run 9F and 10R now and could go with 255/275 respectively but instead I run 235/255 to achieve some tuckage in the rear.

The reason you can't go higher offsets is because when you are baller and run 9" + wide wheels higher offsets will cause rubbage on the suspension and other undesirable sh*t. Also the wider the wheel the wider the tire which means the better the contact patch and grip.... not to mention the never ending quest for flushness and baller look.

Class dismissed.

wider tire does NOT ="bigger" contact patch, just different shaped (so yeah, you are correct when you say you have a "better" contact patch)

BUT... I dont get your logic. " the wider the wheel the wider the tire" sure go ahead and run the wider tire then! oh wait, but then you dont, you stretch a skinnier tire to fit the wider wheel?

dude, im not hte person to questionyou ruck 15si rock 18 and 19sdiffernet world

and not to mention, your an idiot.but iwont elaborate on why, just to piss you off, becuas eyou have no idea about how suspension geometry affects angles, and why a big *** block tire wont work for having perfect fitment

there 16s dude, you are the person to question, its your "educational" thread.nope i dont understand how tire size affects suspension geometry/angles, thats why I asked....and to quote your title "VIP is ghey"

Did I come in here calling you an idiot because I dont agree with your thread? I may not be an expert, But I still stand by what i said that you dont HAVE to stretch your tires.

you are wrong

and ill find someone with big *** fat tires, and put the wheel on my car, and show you how it wont work....if i can find some.

apparently you cant understand the arc of a wheel as it goes up

please tell me what i said that was wrong? Maybe I will actually learn somthing from this educational thread.

and i understand that the wheel arcs as it goes up, but what i dont understand is how does the tire size affect this arc? (like i said in my earlier post, if hte wheel DIDNT arc in when it goes up, my tires would be rubbing)

if the tire is too wide, it wont have hte clearance a stretched tire would

just look at hte clearance pictures wiht the stretched tiresits less than an 8th of an inch....

ehhh ... I run a 17x9 up front. while 225's would be a real stretch I am running 235's which is a slight stretch which helps me clear the fender on compression of the coilover. If you do the math 235 is actually 9.25 inches. So yea even though I have a slight stretch I STILL am running a wider tire. In order for the tire to be block shaped which Yokota is referring to I would need to run 255's which is over a 10" wide tire.

You suck at the math friend.

You probably have a lower offset which allows you to run more stretch and still look good? 235's work for me, my friend tried to get me to go 225's but then when it compresses it looks kind of sunken (with my set-up at least). One day I would like to get some better wheeld but when the set I have only cost me $350 I can't complain.

on my 180 i ran a 18x9 -5and an 18x10 +10

so yeah, id say the offsets were able to run it

Im a big fan of fitment....fitments makes the caryou can have a beautiful paintjob, and badass aero, but bad fitting wheels makes it look lie ****

i like to ride slammed

air ride is only so i can park completely slammed and also be able to enter a steep incline

i normally og as low as possibly on coilovers, the rear on the Cedric are maxed out lowness wise

Good writeup, y0.

I think this is good to see... I'm still not quite comprehending how the SIZE of the tire actually affects the wheel travel, but I don't think that's what Grant meant.

If it actually does, I'd be learning something too.

I've applied some of this to tucking 275's under stock fenders - It's leading me to the conclusion that instead of changing wheels, I'm gonna have new barrels made, with MY choices of offsets.

Lesson, kiddies: If you WANT to run crazy offset, "baller"-style wheels, and stretched tires, DO IT RIGHT!!!!

p.s. If your suspension is shot, ball joints bad, bushings rotted, car falling apart, not running good coilovers, you have NO reason to be reading this thread. Get your car SAFE first.

What i meant is think of it like this

WIth stretched tires, it decreases your radius with normal tires, that radius increases

when your wheels swings up at an inward arc, the stretch allows it to not hit, its like making a L bracket to go around a corner

With a square tire, its like trying to fit a triangle into a circle, the **** doesnt work.

does that make it betteR?i think i made a type above that led to that thinking.

That too.

I need rucas, all the rest is set.

Altho, ever since the locals heard I had a fender roller, it's been non-stop traffic, lol.
