a little stretch, like 235 or 245 on a 9 for example, is actually a great performance compromise too, because you artificially stiffen the sidewalls with the stretch so your turn-in feels better, but its not stretched enough to really have an impact on peak grip...

in this case though what it comes down to is a wider nicer looking wheel fitting under the same fender...do what it takes

for street tires yeah

for race tires you could go up to like 255 and still have great feel...but then youre back to clearance issues because of the sidewall shape

i dont think youll be running a048's on a y33 anytime soon though so you need the stretch

re01rs are still street tires, thats actually the kind of tire i imply when i say street tire

a048's, ra-1's, stuff along that level have stiff enough sidewalls that they dont need a stretch for good turn in

And don't let a woman drive it when you have the new wheels on it. 2 days after I got my 1st set of rims she had already curbed one 5 minutes after getting into the car.

You probably have a lower offset which allows you to run more stretch and still look good? 235's work for me, my friend tried to get me to go 225's but then when it compresses it looks kind of sunken (with my set-up at least). One day I would like to get some better wheeld but when the set I have only cost me $350 I can't complain.
pics of your sidewalls?

225F and 235R on 18s ftw! I'm so happy I wasn't the only one who came to that conclusion. check the sportmax 006 thread to see what that looks like.

Interesting thread...

I thought it was pretty obvious why people run stretched tires on wide low offset wheels. Ive always wondered why people want such wheels in the first place.

It seems your idea of wheel/tire fitment is based on fitting the widest, lowest offset wheels possible. Thats just not my highest priority.

should be everyones priority

Wheels Make a car

you can have the ugliest **** every (take my 180) and put some perfect fitting **** on it, and it looks nice

but if you take a badass car, put some hsitty fitment, it looks horrible.

Shouldn't you want to run the widest tires possible? Better grip, better look. I will say that there is a point where it gets to be too much like putting 19's on a 240/Silvia ect.

No.

There's a "sweet spot" (width) where lateral grip peaks.

Remember, there's distribution of load (weight) issues at work here.

There are also issues of being able to arrive at ideal temperatures, as well as shedding heat sufficiently.

Also, there's diminishing returns at some point because of increased weight of a wider tire / wheel.

Tire compound is WAY more important than size.

The "sweet spot" for road course use on a 240sx seems to be roughly 255/40/17, give or take 20mm width.

That's why you learn how to park properly. If you hit a curb parking, then you deserve to have that wheel toast, lol.

My god is the 'omgineed255widthtiresforbettergripyo' myth so pervasive.

You're right hannibal, it is obvious why people stretch tires: looks and fitment. People have wanted streched tires and a low ride since rap videos came out.

"The "sweet spot" for road course use on a 240sx seems to be roughly 255/40/17, give or take 20mm width."...thanks for bringing some rationality to this thread.

"Wheels make a car".....Thank God auto manufacturers aren't that narrow minded.

If you can't tell, I enjoy driving my car for the way it performs, not the way it looks...

so you chose your car because you already knew how it felt? and not based on how it looked?

I'm sorry, but all this "I dont care how my car looks" is

I'm sure theres a lot of crappy looking cars out in the market that handle well, but your not going to initially think, "ok, I'm getting myself a geo metro because it handles well!"
