Weld a diff for drift, swap in the HLSD for auto-X.

I've gotten to where I can swap a diff in less than an hour.

Peak hp and peak torque are not the same thing as a powerband. KA-T does not generate those torque numbers at low RPMs.

I'm not knocking Greg's motor (I wouldn't be surprised if his vert took down an LS6-powered S13); I'm trying to explain why someone with a torquey motor and a relatively flat powerband would say that he could spin the tires on an HLSD rear end "at will".

I've looked at changing to a 3.69 gear. There would be no appreciable difference in 1st and 2nd would only be a tad longer but it should be one hell of a tad. 3rd on up is where the gears would really stretch out. Hell, the guys at Nissan feel it's a better fit in the S15 at what, 205HP IIRC.

If I was the type to like to experiment with stuff like that I'd be all over that swap.

Well, just counted the splines on the hlsd shafts---29 splines, and they drop right into the open diff that I pulled out of my car.

It's nuts, I tell you .

if you think you can install the helical unit, then there's no reason why you can't install the kaaz unit.you may also want to look into a viscous (VLSD), and get a new viscous couplerit's also considered a 1.5way

Ummm, not so.

It is the same reduction across ALL gears.

Switching from a 3.54 to a 4.08 in my Q45 resulted in (I think) a 17% shorter ratio across the range.

here is a pretty good article from scc on how a helical diff works and why its better for autox vs. drifting.http://www.sportcompactcarweb....rt_3/

Yes of course, but when you multiple the two ratios to get the final one you see a more marked increase in the higher gears. I'm talking in terms of overall MPH gain in each gear.

This statement did nothing for your arguement. The s15 transmission has totally different gear ratios than s13s and s14s so no comparison can be made.

The gear ratios, or the transmission comparison? 6 gears compared to 5 gears will always give you a shorter gear. But no matter your transmission ratios, the diff puts it to the ground. Your diff ratio isn't called FINAL drive for nothing

So my diff is NOT repeat NOT an s15 helical. It is from a Nissan, but apparently from a cedric/gloria. Those came with 29spline output shafts, but all s15 diffs require 30 spline!

That'll work. Better make sure you have more than 2 quarts.

Still loving it...

Got a chance to go WAIL on it pretty good this past weekend.

Took one of the kids out to make some ruckus, wound up in an empty lot doing figure-8's until the smoke got too thick...

Unfortunately, the driveshaft didn't like all that abuse, and went buh-bye, so I installed my aluminum one from UltraRev.

whats clsd? NNOOOOB i know srry

ehh i give up, i plan on buying a vlsd for dd/auto-xand welding my open for track, thank god i have access to a lift to swap em out

clsd = clutch type lsd. As for welding a diff for the track, that's a bad idea.

I'm still loving my helical (even though it's not at s15 one ) and it's given me no problems at all.

Can someone answer this? I need to buy gear oil for the diff. I should have asked in this thread, but didn't think about that.
