I have a tomei, and that thing is locked the millisecond you mash the gas. helicals don't lock though, they transmit power to the outside wheels when turning, and will transmit power to both wheels when accelerating in a strait line provided both wheels are on the same surface (with same friction coefficients). Once one wheel loses a significant amount of traction (IE, one wheel hits dirt or ice) the helical will act like an open diff.

I do believe that's incorrect. When a helical lifts a tire entirely, then it will open diff.

This is correct thinking, but not really true. It all depends on the torque biasing ratio. If the difference in frictional forces at each wheel is larger than the torque bias ratio, then power will be transmitted to the wheel with the smaller frictional force (The one with less grip).

However, in my experience, this is difficult to accomplish, and with an s15 diff, won't really happen unless you completely lift one wheel off the ground. I have tried mashing the gas in first with one gear on snow, and one on dry pavement. Torque transferred to the wheel on the dry, and I took off. The torque biasing ratio of the s15 diff is high enough to overcome even very large differences in traction at each wheel.

welded diff, bashed up fenders, s****y paint, and about $2500 worth of suspension and chassis bracing.

FTW.

Sorry for my misinfo on the HLSD. I was thinking of making a post in the WTB or for sale forum to see if anyone wanted to trade their HLSD for my tomei, but after this thread I don't think thats going to happen

Nissan Cedric/Gloria HLSD's which are pretty much identical to the S15 HLSD work with the stock S13 axels, and they can be found for way cheaper.

Okay, I just finished the diff. It's not on my car yet, but I put them all back together and filled it with 75w-90 Mobil 1 fluid. I'll just leave it overnight to see if there's any leak and install it sometime tomorrow. Everything went smooth with no problems. I have a couple of questions.

1. I followed FSM and used about 1.5 quarts. I wonder why Greg said more than 2 quarts. BTW, filler plug is on the left side of diff over on s13 unlike below picture.

2. I turned the input shaft by hand and worked fine, but when I turn output shaft by hand, I can hear more noise than before. I tried several times and it looks like noise is coming from inside. Is this normal? I'm 100% positive that I installed ring gear, shims, brearing races, outshaft, side seals and everything correct. I hope it's noisy beacuse of different gears inside. My open diff was fairly quiet when I did the same thing to it.

Sorry to bring an old thread back to life, but all the talk was about the s15 lsd going into an s13. I imagine the s15 would also in the s14 with the similar installation?

both use r200 differentials, so yes. Search next time.

Methinks a tuned LS6 makes over 300 ft/lb of torque throughout the powerband. That's probably why he said "whenever I please".
Nobody ever corrected this info. A stock LS1 makes 300ft/tq to the wheels. An LS6 makes around 350 to the wheels. LS6 comes in with a different cam and intake manifold from the LS1. It's also slightly stronger down below.

Gonna need some mega traction on that LS6 powered S13 to beat a KA-T. Freeway would be a different story, but you might have to do some tubbing on the S13 to get a wide enough patch in the back for all that torque. I say Greg in the 1/8th, and LS6 in the 1/4 if the guy hooks at all.

Thought about doing an S15 diff in my coupe, but got a killer deal on the VLSD and decided the car wasn't going to be seriously beat on at the track(I had an AE86 at the time with a 2 way TRD LSD). Looking back on it, I kind of wish I had gone the S15 route, but water under the bridge. I'm only boosting stock PSI anyway, so she hooks fine.

Actually, I'm not too confident in my car's short game, but after driving it 100mph to SoCal and back, I doubt there's much on the road that'll touch her from a roll (50mph on up).

Damn thing acts like it wants to shoot out from under me when I get on it at 80mph - Passing velocity is ungodly...

Better drop some serious weight outta that LS6 S13 as well - I'm lighter than a gutted coupe these days.

i was on my way to an LS powered 240, but then I decided that buying a house was a better investment. and although i love automobiles, i had to think more about the present and what was better for me. An LS240 will be on the way someday, but until then Greg owns the road!

There's a couple locals with LS-1 S-chassis cars, and they're not playing around!

Would be interesting to see a race like that Greg. The T-56's live for the highway. 3rd gear is a Corvette's favorite realm. I'd pay money to see an Ls1/2/6 S13 and your KA-T go head to head. Would be a kickass run.

I gotta switch back to the OEM radiator fan on the S/C C5. The one that came with the Pro-charger kit stopped working so stop and go traffic is bad news. Once I get her daily driving again, want to run?

It was a 335 with mods... I didn't even get a chance to get on it fully, he was GONE.

Sounds good to me - I have a GTech Pro, we could "cyber" them and see how they compare!

i found out that the stock turbos are different sized, ones smaller to reduce lag low end and the other is larger for more power top end, thats nifty!

Ebay FTW!!!

You gotta love a guy who can't spell.

I just won a S15 HeRical LSD for $58. Shipping from Japan is another $65.. but hey.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...82744

What else to I need now? Output shafts and ring gears? I'll reread this thread.

Well this was a nice read. Until griego found out he had the wrong differential the whole time and he infact doesn't have an s15 lsd.

But when i get my car, this differential will be something to look into. Also, where can i find one? The only place i'v found so far is ebay... and i have had bad experiences w/ ebay.

You need the output shafts. The ring gear is unnecessary, though some choose to get the correct ring gear bolts which have 12mm thread but a 13mm shank.

And Tchouikos13, sorry to disappoint. My helical is for all intents and purposes the same as the s15 one, but with oem sized ring gear bolts and 29 spline output shafts.
