so i spun a bearing/threw a rod (idk what) the other night. got on it too much when while it wasnt up to operating temp and now its knocking real bad. luckly i have an extra KA that i picked up a while back. so ill be picking up all new seals and gaskets this week and the plan is to swap it out next weekend. its unfortunate because i was going to build the extra one for boost. but on the bright side, i can tear down the old KA and inspect it and learn more about it.

LOL
:( That sucks.

Getting on it with cold oil probably wasn't the main cause but it couldn't have helped.
Probably would've died soon anyways.

Good luck with the engine swapping!
At least now you have a chance to replace and clean everything.

it does, but i was telling Jay right after it happened how amazing it sounded bouncing off the limiter haha
but yeah, i knew it was on the way out. it had a knocking sound since i bought it, which i just assumed was the timing chain rattle.
haha im hoping it goes smoothly, but, knowing me, it wont. atleast its an excuse to get the new mounts ive been putting off. and i can put it the solid steering bushing i bought.

Nice.
What mounts and bushing?

Is the spare KA in good condition?
If you don't trust it, I bet you could just replace the one rod and bearing on your current motor and drive it like that for now. Then slowly build up the spare motor.

Wheels are looking great but that sucks about the motor. It should be a fair amount of work and difficulty, just time consuming. Pulling it out and putting it back in might be some trouble because of the long trans. Best thing to do is put nuts and bolts a few threads back in so you know where they go, not in a bucket.

im gonna stop by touge factory on monday and see what they have. more than likely im going to go with nismo mounts. which idk about cause i know they make the motor sit higher, and i wana get the johnny fraz tower brace.

an i trust the motor. has a brande new head with 5k on it and it ran string when he pulled it.

and thanks! i just wish i had the 16x8s on front. itll look so much better when i have those. but i have a garage with a limited amount of space, so im going to pull the trans first, than the motor.

well, motor is still in the car as of today. ive had to drive it to and from work the past week. still knocks real bad, but it kind of sounds like its coming from the top end. (not that i actually know)

so im thinking the timing chain guide could have loosened and the chain is just slapping around cause of how loose it is. could that be possible?
because it doesnt usually start knocking till around 2k and higher and sometimes goes away while cruising.

anyways, onto the new motor. i took it apart to clean it and get it ready for all the new gaskets.
top end. kind of dirty, but nothing some seafoam cant fix
Image

besides being dirty, the only thing that bothered me was that lobe in the upper right looks scored
Image

Image

underneath
when i took the pan off, i found out it was held on to the block by RTV only  so i had to order new pan bolts
Image

and if you noticed, heres a close up of the oil pick up...
Image
i guess the PO decided to open things up for more oil flow
either way i ditched it cause i went with the s14 oil pickup.
i got all the new gaskets and bolts waiting to be put on the new motor once the pan bolts get in.
i got Megan motor and trans mounts as well. i really didnt want to go with them, but for all 3, Nismo was almost 500 bucks. and ive been very limited in the finance department when all of this happened.
i got some of these guys too. one for the trans and one for the diff
Image
and i got a new clutch pivot ball cause i forgot to do that last time i had the trans off

im hoping i can get the motor out in the next week or 2. driving it with that knocking sound is really nerve racking/annoying/embarrassing.

You could take off your valve cover and see how the chains are.
Record a video of the sound!

so i took off the valve cover to check the upper chain. and its totally fine. nice and tight. i didnt get to check the lower chain cause i dont have enough time today.
so, after that i did what any normal person would do in this situation...i added more negative camber to the front.
but heres some videos of the knocking

:spitout: <-- That nearly happened when I heard the knocking kick in.

:rotfl I had a glimmer of hope that it'd just be some weird freak tapping noise, but that's knock for sure.

Holy sh*t you werent kidding about that!!

Also I gasped at the oil pickup.. the people that try and get away with cheap fixes/upgrades. Probly looking for more oil pickup power. Knew a guy that drill out too big of a hole in some part of his trans of his Crown Vic too try and get more oil. Ended up dropping pressure too low and ruining the trans. dumbass...

Anyways, cant trust anything anymore. I would scrutinize that motor.

yeah, after seeing the pick up, im going to get a new pump. i dont want to risk it.
but i really dont have the time to really dissect the new motor. i really wish i could tho because like you said, you cant really trust anything anymore.

so, heres the plan:
swap motor
solid steering bushing
drop subframe
put in max subframe risers
install rucas
weld diff
raise ride height
put HKS exhaust back on
lots of work ahead of me, so it looks like ill be riding my bicycle to work for the next week or so haha. but im really looking forward to getting it done

Camber is easy to do with a ruler and a level and calculator.
Toe is a bit tricky though.

im not worried about toe since its only the rear im adjusting.
im gonna have to pull my fenders now tho. which kind of sucks cause i have to use a torch instead of a heat gun. i mean, my fenders are already buckled, so i guess it ok.

I'd be careful about that, with the design of the S-chassis rear suspension, any time you adjust the rear camber, the toe is changed as well. Why not take it to a shop and have it professionally aligned, it usually only costs $75-$100.

Well I guess for me that seems like a small sacrifice, I'd just old off going to the bar for a night or two, but hey money is money to everyone...

yeah im def going to get a full alignment. cause i did mess with front camber and put on bigger wheels. so it really is in need. plus i told myself that i was going to do everything right and not cut corners with this.
in other news, i got the last bits for the new motor from Nissan today, so ill be putting everything back together with new seals, gaskets and bolts. all im waiting on is an engine hoist and for it not to be so damn hot so i can ride my bike to work without dying on the way haha

slowly getting the new motor back together. dont have much time cause of work, and cause our garage is filled with all my sisters s*** for school. but anyways, a few pictures.
s14 oil pick up compared to the stock s13 with the "modified" opening

pan on with new bolts. like i said, it was previously held on with nothing but RTV D:
Image
and the new rear main with the new housing
Image
now, i have a question about this. as you can see, theres a "dent" in the seal itself. i forgot to put it in how i did before, so it was difficult to get in. so i had to use a bit of muscle.
my question is, is that fine? or should i take that one out and put in a new one? cause that last thing i want is to have it leak at the rear main again.

I'd replace the seal.
They're pretty cheap I think. Lube the seal and crank up with engine oil before putting it in, mine went in easy.
