What they mean by no highway is basically to not use cruise control. They want to avoid a steady rpms.
The best way to break in a car is to go on a small back road and having fun in your new car without exceeding 3000 rpms. Speed is not important, changes in rpms and no excessive (hard) braking is more important.
Another good thing to do, when you are alone on the road, is to go up to a good speed and then release the throttle in order to get the cylinder in vacuum mode (engine braking) and then re-accelerate again, like pulse and glides. It is good for the engine.

Enjoy your ride.

Thank you Pescakl1, :)

I wish I knew those tricks before..Do you think I am too late at 1000kms to use these techniques? My only fear is to have a "dull" engine.... :frown:

Don't worry, I knew these tricks after I have done several hundred kms with my car, using the cruise control on the highway.

No car will die from not using these techniques. No proof have been shown to say they will make the engine better.

Fully breaking in an engine is about 5-10.000 kms from what I understand, so no harm doing these techniques for a while, but I think you can start using the cruise control if you go on the highway now.

Like a lot of people say, the lot boy probably broke in your engine just moving the car from the assembly line. The true breaking in period is the first 50 kms, and for some company, these "kms" are done in the factory. After, they change the fluids and put the engine in the car.

The pulse and glide part is quite nice to do as it helps sit the seals on the cylinders. But still, I did not do it at the time, and my engine seems OK without that.

@ 1 629 km: 11,56L/100 km. Improved mileage due to a long Sunday afternoon run out of town. At this rate, I can never see us hitting the advertised L/100km either in-town or highway. Money saved by buying a less expensive vehicle will be sucked up paying for poorer mileage. Could get better mileage if the fog light pods were fully enclosed and the hood weighed half as much?

Johny_maple,

~1600km is very low mileage still. You won't be seeing an improvement until the engine and transmission are broken in some more... at least 5,000km.

Two other factors that also impact mileage:

- Ethanol blended gasoline
- Winter blended gasoline combined with more time spent idling. I see as much as 1l/100km drop during winter.

Be patient, the mileage will improve. I typically average 8.5l/100km during the summer.

jrr wrote:Both of you bring up good points. If it wasn't a cvt but rather an automatic, its like sticking in first gear instead of upshifting. A lot of this driving takes place in cold mornings but this morning it stayed at stuck and slowed down when feathered, instead of lowering rpm to match a steady 30-35 mph. Not sure this is making sense. I guess we head off to a dealer. If this is how its suppose to run I will find something a little less thirsty.
Sticking in a lower gear sorta rings a bell. Have you checked that the "OD Off" button on the side of the shifter is not pressed? The rpms you describe are about what would happen if that button is pressed.

Rarely drive the thing but just ran out to see the button. Good suggestion, but it is in a position that you have to make a concerted effort to engage it. Don't think that its.

Having come from a 2010 Subi OB with CVT, this transmission does stick and not move to a reasonable rpm level. It is also near impossible to maintain a consistent speed. This peddle/transmission is beyond reasonably sensitive unlike the OB. Love everything else about it but something seems out of whack and guess its service time.

2011 Rogue S: April 23. 10,23 L/100 km. Seems to have settled in at 10,22/10,23 L for a mixture of in-town and highway driving. Odo now at at 2 634 km. Rogue was in for its first check-up; all is well. Have noticed though that at times when parking, "it" smells hot - burning oil/ hot metal - whatever "it" is.

N.B. The rubber-band effect of the transmission is kind of neat; on level ground, I feed it a little gas, let off, coast, feed it some more ......... Take OD off only when crawling in city traffic. Don't know if that's the right way to do it but it works for me.

Ok, 2008 Rogue SL AWD with 64,000 miles. First tank: Dealer filled it up, don't know what kind of gas?? Got 24.88MPG with a dirty air filter. My Fiance drives about 25 miles round trip to work, mostly city. I adjusted her route to work to avoid all of the stop lights for the second tank. Second tank: Filled up with 93 Octane 100% GAS-NO Ethanol, got 27.27, air filter was changed within the first 100 miles on this tank. (Trip Computer was accurate, said 27.2). I'm on the third tank now, filled up with 89 Octane 100% GAS. So far the trip computer says 27.7MPG, have seen it hit 28.2. It appears that the Rogue loves to live around 45-50mph and to accelerate slowly-keeping it under 2500rpm. Short trips, stop and go, anything over 65mph-can drop the gas mileage considerably. We are thrilled with these numbers b/c she had a 98 Explorer Sport that averaged 17mpg no matter what.

2011 AWG SL with about 500 miles on the engine
301 miles/12.69 gallons of regular enleaded. 23.72 mpg with about 2/3 highway.
Pretty happy with that result with an engine far from broken in.

When I drive the value on the dash fuel consuption has been steadily climbing from the 15 mpg to almost 22 since purchase day. However, when my wife drives the reading either goes down or stays the same. I think I'm better with throttle control and not accelerating then letting off and such. I don't mean trying to maintain speed or anything like that. I'll update at 1000 miles.

2011 Rogue SV with SL: 20.5 mpg (average) after 1,300 miles in regular weather conditions (NY/NJ area)

I was expecting at least 22 mpg (official city mileage)... should I tune it up or should I wait?

2011 Rogue S. 3 333 km on the odo. 8,91L/100km = 26.4 mpg
A sudden improvement from 10.5L/100km to the new number was surprising as my driving has been as usual; more in-town than highway. It was in for its first a check-up recently but I don't know what they could have done that would have improved the numbers. Hey, I'm not complaining....!

July 20.... 7.65L/100km ... 572.0 km
July 21.... 9.26L/100km ... 452.9 km

Two on July 17 is not a misprint.
All driving on interstates 69, 70, 15, 84, 90 and 5. Speeds from 100 km/h - 130/140 km/h
Could have gone further each day but in some places, you have to get gas where you can get it. Some western communities don't have any services.
And I'm still grumpy about the inaccurate gas gauge; it drops like a rock after the halfway mark.

I have the 2011 SL since new in the NYC area. I have originally disliked the vast difference in MPG real life and rated. Read about the break in period and all that. I am at 8000 miles now. The trip computer is crap, as it moves less and less if you don't reset it after each tank ans isnt useful in the long run.

I have never gotten above 340 miles on a single tank. And that was driving almost all highway. Initial impressions in city mixed after driving off the lot were in the 16-17mpg area. I stopped counting now, got tired of dissapointment. Tried driving carefully, slow accel no hard brakes etc, the drove as usual without limitations, Result was that I barely added 10 miles to the tank by driving super cautious. This car doesnt really accelerate even when I want it too, so I cannot imagine how some of you are driving it carefully. I cant wait 18 seconds to get up to 60mph, and I dont think anyone should to claim the rated MPG. But in my case even that didnt help.

Feel free to chime in with your thoughts. I come to think that the NYC area gas is a complete ripoff, as I do not know anyone who ever got remotely close to their EPA. I average 260-280 miles on the tank, Yellow light pops up at ~250-270. I fill up between 15.3-16 gallons.

In all honesty I hate driving a vehicle who's only benefit is supposedly great fuel economy and awd in a small factor SUV. I could drive a V6 X5 or any other v6 full size suv and get close to the same mileage. And actually move the car without waiting on acceleration for 5 seconds .Annoying to say the least.

I should have mentioned that we had the AC on the whole time too, which makes a difference in L/100km.

2011, SV, AWD. Have taken several 600 mile trips on 98% highway... 26 to 27 mpg at between 68/70 mph cruise control.

City milage, rolling terrain, consistently at between 21/22 mpg.

Computer calculated mileage has been hovering at 14.4L/100km(100% city driving).

So, i finally did the test and filled it up with the gas all the way and just did re-fueling yesterdary.
My numbers are: 372KM traveled, consumed 58L of gas = 15.6 liters per 100km or 15.1 miles per US gallon
Outside temps are at around -9 C average(few day was -20C to - 11 C)
Summer city average is at:12.6L (wife driving)

August 7 ....... 7,54L/100km ..... short trips on Vancouver Island, on mainland and run up to Hope, BC.
August 8 ....... 8,06L/100km ..... Hope, BC to Avola, BC. Into the Rockies.
August 9 ....... 7,5L/100km ...... Avola to Lake Louise, AB. In the Rockies.
August 10 ..... 6,75L/100km ..... Lake Louise to Medicine Hat, AB. Out of the mountains to the foothills and prairie.

Could have gotten to 600 km a tank a few times but not all remote communities have gas stations (i.e. Hwy. 5 N from Kamloops) so often had to fill up earlier than usual. Very happy with L/100km results for highway driving.

Turned off the no-fun configuration (anti-skid control), used cruise control a lot as well as the AC. Perfect weather and road conditions. Odo now at 12 723 km so have done about 6 000 km + in the last four weeks.

Sweated this one out - in the red!
August 14 .... 630.5 km Screwed up on the odo/trip meter for L/100km. Seem to get better mileage using cruise control. In two days, I'll be back to in-town driving so it will be interesting to see any changes in L/100km compared to prior to our 5-week road trip. Odo yesterday morning was 15 017km.
