Speedo Gear Part # and procedure to get your speedo to work correctly.

Your local Nissan dealer can get you the speedo gear, but order inadvance as all the dealers here in Miami don't have it in stock.

The Nissan part # is 32743-35F20 and cost is about $17.95.

The speedo does not fit exactly and you have to do the following:

1. Rotate the new speedo in as it is wider than the OEM speedo2. It will look like that the gears will not fit, but they will after twisting in the speedo into the transmission to match the gears3. You will need relocate "tab" that holds the speedo gear in place with new spot weld to make it stay

Also it was suggested that we use a "LS Fluid with weight 85-140". He also said that the synthetic will free up the friction a little more. Is this the weight that you all use currently?

I would like to be able to tell you, but F'ing UPS lost my new 4.08 rearend today so I can't tell you. I can't believe it that they really lost a whole rearend and that was my core that I bought so that I did not have any down time. Well I guess that it is better than losing my actual rearend now come to thing about it because then I would be really screwed trying to find a new arse.

BTW....I think that it weighed about 110lbs according to the ebay listing that I bought mine from. Whatever you do, don't ship it UPS unless you have it insured. Mine was insured so at least I did not lose all my monies...just $150 so far. And to think that I stopped by PepBoys tonight to pick up the proper weight gear oil to give to the dealer tomorrow while they are installing my new rearend.

Cool, thanks. I just dropped mine out a little while ago and it felt every bit of 85 lbs.

that is our fellow Nico member...DR.Q who is parting a 92 Q45...check out the Nico parts forum as he may still have a lot of parts left on the 92 Q. I got the transmission off of it and it is at LevelTen being rebuilt right now. I am going to wait a week or two to see if my rearend shows up from UPS, if not then it is the rental car lot for me and I will drop my rearend and overnight it to Cali and then overnight it back to put into my car. I would try the 92 rearend, but I don't think that it will work with my 95 car and I have traction control as well. With my luck going the way it is...wheels on back order, dealer problems, & a lost rearend...I would not be surpised to find out that my new transmission will not work properly.

Thanks for the plug, but that's not mine. It looks like mine will be on its way to SoCal pretty soon.

Installed my 4.08 today. Took 2 guys with hand tools and a jack 1.5 hours - VERY simple swap. I'd type more but I gotta go for another drive... :D

All I can say is, "Why didn't I do this 2 years ago?"

awesome...keep us posted on how you like it. Did you do the speedo gear also? tell us really quick before you go out and hunt down your first victim with your new gears....how much better is the acceleration and what about the tire burning from a stop...are you breaking traction a lot easier now?

What's traction?

Actually, i haven't nailed it from a stop yet - wanna let it break in some first.

Didn't do the speedo gear yet. Speedo is DEFINITELY reading high, and for some reason my odometer quit when I did the swap, so I need to ask about that.

It's the way the Q SHOULD have been equipped from the beginning. :D

I recall that our Aussy friend, AGM, said that his car did not like the gear swap either and was acting funny until he did the speedo gear swap. It looks like it is a common problem. Well I have the little speedo gear, cost of $18 from Nissan, but no rearend gear yet. I can't believe they lost it. This just really sucks. It looks like I will have my transmission in before I get my new rearend as the transmission should be here by the end of the week. Enjoy your new rearend and go easy on the tires.

RSI,

What do you think of the performance of your G loaner...

1/4 mile for the auto, is like 14.6@98, or close to that...

Rob - Where does that little gear go? On the transmission?

There's a sensor on the rear diff with a magnetic pickup, but I believe it is for the ABS. Someone feel free to correct me...

noway...this auto G35 sedan can't be that quick and if it is then my car is a lot quicker than I think. The big advantage of the G35 is that it really does shift a lot quicker than my Q. I was surprised how quick and I can only hope that my new transmission is worth the monies and shifts this quick also...so there might be an advantage there in shifting, but the engine is really not all that strong @ 260hp for the sedan. I think my Q would have no problem running with this car from about 40mhp+ definetly from 70+ would not be a problem. Off the line...yes it would whip me good, but from 40 on I can't really see it being any faster. I do like the brakes on this sucker...it really stops on a dime and makes me want to get better brakes for my Q. I feel a little more comfortable hauling butt knowing that I can stop on a dime.

Hey Hitman...I thought you were going to go break that thing in....get out of the NICO forum, grab a coke, and go break in that new rearend so we can really hear how much you like it at WOT from a dead stop. :D

the sensor is actually on the transmission....follow the cable from the diff to the transmission and the new speedo gear actually inserts into the transmission. See my post above for the Nissan part # and how to stick it in the transmission. it is not an exact fit and you will need a "tack" weld to hold the new speedo in place.

wow!!! I can't believe it. All I can think of is that it really gains on the shift quickiness (also off the line) as it is at least twice as quick as my Q and very smooth so no time is lost there and I feel no kick in of extra power after the shifts...just a constant strong accleration. I think that my Q is just as quick when we are not shifting from 50+ as I know my car takes longer to shift and loses so much power becuase after I shift say at 90mph under WOT the back end really sits down when everything gets done shifting and the car just takes off like nobody's business and I am feeling that I am losing a lot of acceleration power during the shift and that is why I feel such a strong surge in power right after the shift. Then again my dyno curves indicated a lot of power...more than usual around 4,000 rpms which is where my car is at after I shift and my power curve was less than usual for the high rpms. Either way....I am going to the number 1 performance shop on Friday for a couple of dyno runs that sould give me my best reading thus far...that is if I get my car back from the dealer.

No converter required for gear change, just a speedo gear replacement.

A TC is a torque multiplier, a clutch between your eng & trans.

Here is a quote from AzHitman about his new 4.08 rearend :ylsuper

"FYI, with my 4.08s, I can now scorch my 255/50VR16's (200 treadwear rating) on dry pavement approximately halfway to all the way through an intersection... Perhaps 20 yards? Nice thick white smoke..."

Unfortunately, I have to wait 14 days from today to see if UPS can find my rearend. They lost it as my new rearend was suppose to be here last Friday. The guys at LS Auto were cool and had it fully insured so I am only out about $125 right now from the core I sent to them...but it really sucks waiting and now it looks like I am going to have to send them my original core so that means down time for my Q. I guess that it will save me a few bucks from burning up my tires as if I had that installed right now I would have already gone through and entire set.

thanks for the help out....always much appreciated. I talked to Kevin today at LSAuto and we have to wait 14 days to see if UPS can find it before they will issue a refund for the rearend which was fully insured. I told Kevin fine....and that we would wait 14 days and then if no show still that I would 2 day ship my rearend out there, but not using UPS.

Check out the Infiniti Online mechanic forum....Q45tech likes to bust my balls about the 4.08 swap and moving to a 90-93 transmission. I get a good laugh (and I mean that in a nice way) hearing his comments and it only pushes me to challenge his comments. So much so I am taking my car to the 1/4 probably on Saturday to see what it can do now being stock and then we will have both dyno numbers and 1/4 numbers to compare.

AzHitman....BTW, Kevin was very pleased to hear that all was working good and that you scortched your tires all the way through an intersection. I told him when I get my rearend that he should be able to hear my screatching the tires all the way back in Cali from Miami. It will be the tire screetching heard across the US type of history thing.

how much labor would it cost appox. to have the 4.08 gears installed and the torque converter installed? Or can i do it my self with no extra tools?
