anybody heard of remote mount turbo system?

So Basically im going to use my Miata as a test car for this setup. What I did realize is how in the world am I going to secure my turbo so some jack *** doesn't come with a wrench and steal that thing LOL.

Actually in all honesty, I was kind of serious, and I was thinking of welding on a lil flange that will allow me to put like a combo lock onto the turbo, and hook it up to the chasi.

And the Miata is already lowered as a mofo, but still this is ****in Chi town, people are capable of anything here HAHA.

im personally not real familiar with the underside of a miata but you might try and put the turbo a little further up stream so it is not so visible. thats what i plan on doing, as a matter of fact i might even replace my cat converter with it.

I'm going to be using a RB25 turbo and it's a 1.8 liter. I'm thinking with 2.5in piping and heat wrapping, it will allow the exhaust gas's to stay hotter before they reach the turbo there for keeping its velocity.

In return I'm hoping to have almost no lag but I guess Il see .

I was under the impression the purpose of this type of system was for cars w/ verry little engine-bay space. The reason they do it on the vette from what I have heard is there is no room for one, and if you do stuff them under there theres a good chance w/o plenty of fab work/ heat shielding, you are going to melt your hood(fiberglass ftw). I personaly wouldnt consider this setup, my car scrapes trany on LOW speed bumps. If you have the clearence and the funds i say go for it for uniqueness.

have you figured how you are going to do you oiling needs yet? pretty sure ive got mine handled, got me a pump coming from ebay for 50.00 and all i have to now is get the lines and a filter housing now. and of course all the piping bent to where i need it.

looseslide in most cases the turbo will be in the back so really it has plenty of clearance.

Gonna use a turbowerks scavanging pump its perfect for the return line. Im going to mounted in the engine bay further away from the turbo.

I will also make sure though that the turbo is still clocked in a way that it gravity drains at least a little before the pumps pulls the oil away.

And the feed line just from the oil pressure sender. This way with longer oil lines, I will also achieve a oil cooler effect .

sounds good! i was thinking maybe putting it a little closer to the turbo so it wouldnt have to pull so hard (easier to push than to pull). i also planned on using the sending unit as my feed. where do you plan on returning the oil, back in the pan or somehow getting back up to the top of the engine?

I think dumping the oil back into the oil pan would be best. That way all the lines stay under the car, and there's no steep inclines on the return line, therefore the pump wouldn't have to work as hard.

Actually the pump I got from turbowerks, is capable of shooting oil up 20 feet vertically with out a problem.

Now I was just thinking of getting the oil back in through the valve cover, the reason being is and I don't know how accurate I am. But I'm hoping to achieve the oil cooling effect and having cooler oil squirt back into the engine from the top there for cooling down my valve train.

If anyone has any info if I'm thinking about this correctly let me know.

After laying out all my stuff yesterday I went ahead to pep boys and wow to my surprise they carry a **** load of differ exhaust piping, that made me so happy all I need to do now is get my damn welder up and running, and I can start measuring things out.

I also have a sr20 side mount ic laying around I'm thinking of maybe incorporating that into the setup and hopefully cooling the air down even more.

I'm pretty physekd about all this though I might even get started a lot sooner then I was planing on woot. And if this works out well a Remote Mount KA-T is going to be next.

d@mn dude you werent kidding about this at all huh!! your like 20 steps ahead of me im still in the planning stage and you bout to build. glad to see you getting it done so easy. let me know if you run into any hangers.

also i agree with returning the oil back through the valve cover as it will cool down things dramatically.

You know what else I was thinking about the whole idea of hanging your turbo on hangers.

It will also kind of work like a flex pipe giving a turbo the mobility when under TQ, there for less broken parts. I'm sure there is some downsides to this, but with the setup being so much cheaper.

Now I was thinking of testing my oil lines, the same concept as you would with a normal setup. I'm guessing with the width and length of oil lines, I will probably need to add about an extra Quart in to the engine.

Now, how do you plan on running your oil pump? Cause I was thinking about doing it as soon as I turn the key over it goes on, but then I would realistically have to turn the engine on right away too.

Unless the pump has enough power to be able to pull oil through the feed line and recirculated it right back into the engine while the engine is off, in which case I wonder what the negative outcomes are of that are.

Now putting it on a manual switch has crossed my mind too, but there will be that one day that I will forget to flip that thing and realize it when i hear BOOM.

thinking on that, if the feed was low enough there would always be oil trapped in the line going to the turbo. and if you have it where the pump comes on when the key is put in ACC you should always have enough oil there for the pump to prime.

the thing is that it seems to me you have to put the pump on the return side of the turbo. where this might make it very hard for the pump to pull from say the sending unit through the turbo and then push it back up to the valve cover.

maybe we could tap into the pan like on regular setups because the engine will be higher than the turbo, oil will drain back to the turbo. and when you start the engine and oil pump everything will be primed and the pump will have no prob getting the oil back up to the valve cover, as that is what it is designed to do.

on another note you could put a reserve somewhere and never worry with tying it to the engine. just let the pump pull from the reserve to the turbo and then back to the reserve. this may or may not work and may or may not be stupid but it is a idea. heck you might not have to have such a strong pump then. especially if the reserve was somewhere near the turbo.

Whoa bro, ok the Oil pump has to be on the return side of the turbo, cause the oil drains from it by gravity pull, and the pump is used to further help it along its way.

The oil pressure sending unit does all the work for the feed line to feed the oil to the turbo heh.

But thats not really that big of a problem I'm sure I can think of something .

A small resovoir and a Diff Fluid pump is the cheapest/best thing for oil return. The resovoir keeps the oil from pooling inside the turbo, the pump can deal with very hot petro based fluids.

The remote system will work and work well. The lag issue can be overcome with a smaller AR exhaust housing. It's not the most efficient way to add bost, but its EASY as hell. A few U bends and some straights...done.

WDRacing a while ago u posted on a thread i started about my supercharger setup about being able to run a huge turbo with my supercharger. well i was searching intercooler setups and ran into that thread again. it got me thinking that i could keep my supercharger and still go with this remote turbo combo.

well my ? is how would i kill the supercharger when the turbo boost comes in, and make it as seemless as possible? also do you think this would be a streetable setup or would it be track purpose only? cause i would absolutely LOVE to have a twincharged 240sx!!!!!!

Is your SC on the cold side? IE attached to the intake? The only benefit to twin charging is the ability to run a huge turbo and not suffer the ill effects of lag. So your best bet would be to install a standard mani installed turbo about the size of a T70 or bigger. You don't have to "turn off" the SC either, the turbo will blow through it.

It would be like running a huge turbo and using nitrous to spool it up, except you use a SC and never have to refill.

I'd love to see this done.

so basically your saying pipe the turbo through the intake of the supercharger? maybe put a small air to water intercooler in between the turbo and supercharger to keep temps down going into the sc'er. to make the bypass valve on the sc'er id have to keep the throttle body before the sc'er correct?

wouldnt this starve the supercharger for air? also how do you think the mafs would act, being a pull through at first then becoming a blow through? and wouldnt the sc'er restrict airflow for the turbo? do you think the supercharger would affect the blow off valve for the turbo. being that the supcharger will be pull air from the turbo, until the turbo spools.
