Yesterday evening, I was right behind a Mazda speed 6. I was amazed at the rate of acceleration of this vehicle form a dead stop. Mind you, this is an inline 4 cylinder engine with a turbo charger. Even while in motion, the G-35 had a hard time keeping up with the Mazda Speed 6. I bet it would have been the same with the Mazda Speed 3.

Once again, after going over the G-35s design and its intended philosophy, I am of the belief that the G-35 was intended to be turbo charged or supercharged. What we bought at the dealership was just the beginning of what the manufacturer intended for us to do to the G-35.

And, in fact, I read in one automotive magazine that Nismo is a little disappointed that many 350z owners are not moding out their car with the requisite power the car can handle. Of course, i extended this thought to the G-35 as well, since they both have similar engines.

I think saving up for a Twin Turbo or a Supercharger is well worth it for any G-35. Else, the G-35 with all its mighty engine and potential, will continue to be disgraced in performance by little cars like the Mazda Speed 6, Dodge Neons, Subaru Wrx, Mitsibishi eclipses, Mitsubishi Evos, etc.

What do you think?

N.B. Check out this link to the world's most fuel efficient car so far. Behold, the Loremo, in all its fuel efficient glory!

Eh, the G35 isn't meant to be an all out performance car, the 350 is. Thats why it's shorter (better handling) lighter and faster than our car. Our G's are meant as a grand tourer. Powerful, smooth, yet still fun in the corners and just as comfy over a long trip. The mazdaspeed cars are meant as complete performance cars, to be better and faster than their normal counterparts....and a mazdapeed3 is faster than the 6 on a roll....those things are seriously quick!

Bah.I keep some thick gauge chain in my car so when someone tries to pass me I repeatedly beat their hood until they concede my car as being faster. That's all the turbo charge I need! SPARTICUS!

Seriously, while I would love more speed, I think what I have is just enough...for now...

A Cobalt pulled up next to a McLAREN F1 GTR. The Cobalt wants to race. The McLaren agrees so the Cobalt driver won't think is has a faster car.

If the McLaren wins, the world will say "you should have won, why are you racing a Cobalt anyway?" The McLaren driver suffers shame and embarrassment in his win, just like a pro football player would playing in the pee wee league.

If he races and loses, then the world will look at the McLaren driver and say something like; hahaha u=loser

If he races and ties with the Cobalt, the world snickers and says: "Look at all the money you wasted on the McLaren, a Cobalt is just as fast. And again, the world points and laughs at the McLaren driver.

Moral to the story, when you're driving a nice car, the way to win a street race is not to race. Any result = you lose. Just smile and drive away. Then the world says, The McClaren could have killed him.

I said it before and I'll say it again, I refuse to put myself into a position where I'll be beaten by something that looks like Bea Arthur, but drives like an Enzo.

Moral of the story is that all you have to do to make a turd go faster is to squeeze harder...

Well said! And it is very similar from the Skyline engineers interview I read. Then Again, according to Nissan, 350Z is a GT as well. Not a race car. And Nismo is a after market parts company that is owned by Nissan. They do light tuned parts for street, and while their cars are known to be more powerful than stock, they have characteristic of the stock. If you have ever build a street car with their parts, you would understand. Totally different in a race car though.

Turbo cars are usually quicker off the line because of the torque. However, NA engine has its advantages over turbo engine, such as quicker response and beautiful sounds! I wouldn't turbo it.

If you want a race car like fast car, then why not buy a Supra? I bought my G35 because it is comfortable, fairly fast, and fun to drive!!!!!

AT THE TRACK

The Mazda Speed 3's and 6's are running 14.4 - 14.5 1/4 miles when I am running 14.0's.

They do accelerate quicker off the line but it seems like the loose top end at about the 1/8th miles and I pull car lengths on them. The SI Civics are the same way...

Its a fun race none the less A couple trips to the track ago I had a Speed 3 wagon call me out LOL. I beat him and then he came over to talk about my car.

Supercharger Jacko? You need an after-buring turbojet if your life depends on beating everything that happens to be next to you.

G-woods:

The 2007 and 2008 G-35 Sedans are another story altogether. They are lightning fast. I was speaking about the G-35 Coupe. I was wondering if changing the pulley to non-underdrive pulleys would help with throttle response?

Ummm... analogies are great to tell an underlying story. But - G35/Mazdaspeed6 --to-- MacF1/Cobalt... a wee bit far fetched don't you think?

People are always critical of what other members post... and so they should - cuz if you post it, you're accountable.

Anyways, I would like to think my G is and has the same stature of a Maclaren F1 - ... but it is not. . . furthermore, I wouldn't want it to be anyways -it is partially made up of BMW parts [BMW?-bmw drivers are notoriously RUDE on public roads! -infiniti drivers- i would like to think... are not ---excuse my biased hatred for BMWs -crap!]

and the Mazdaspeed6 --- really, with all due respect, it is nothing like the American Cobalt [japanese wannabe] - almost base -Civic-like car.

Just my opinion.

It was meant as figurative prose, a metaphor. It was never intended to be taken literally.

Jacko, you got a point...The G and Z is nowhere near where it has to be to spank the other sport cars in performance numbers... and will need forced induction to get it where it needs to be.

But what I believe happened is that Nissan MUST have decided this years ago - to spend the R&D$ on the GTR, and its 2 new SUV's... and this is even after they spent the $ on the new G35sedan and G37coupe.

I think the GTR really replaced Nissan's need to speed up the Z and the G.

----Although, there are many talks of the G37 becoming a G50 shortly... and maybe an Infiniti version of the GTR! ... and if they are able to make enough cars [production] - then there won't be too much dealer mark-up, and the price would be about $70k - which is about or less than the audi RS4 etc.

A G50???What's that?

Also, Nissan has what will probably be dubbed the 370Z hitting the streets in roughly 2009. More ponies (talk is of 330 hp).

Point taken but in my opinion, the metaphorical analogy is affective only when the comparison is a valid one. One that doesn't pose a doubt in the reader's mind - regarding the relevance.

If the analogy is meant to be a little far fetched for stronger affect, it may work, but TOO far fetched - will kill the affect - and have very little affect on the readers.

It's all about affect isn't it.

some rumours have been released on the G getting the M45's V8 --- but bored out to 5.0 liter [hence G50]- plus a joint venture with Toyota's [Yamaha Performance Division] to produce the induction and top end of the engine ...

and you may think - joint with Toyota??? NOway!... well, Nissan already buys the hybrid engine tech from Toyota... so apparently, Toyota will sell more hybrids to Nissan if this G50 project happens! -cool!

Just rumours though. .. just what I read...

Lucid,

I read the same article!

The FX35/45 is supposed to become an FX37/50 for 2009!

That would make a sweet ride G35 sedan with the FX50 drive train!

Some real competition for the IS-F!

Yes, Very exciting indeed...Nissan/Infiniti is definitely putting out the big guns this year and the next few...

I love it: The GTR and the upcoming G's will spank the M3 and Audi's S4/S5!!!

I had the audi S4 4.2 liter V8 with quattro -prior to buying my 07G35s sedan - similar to yours [awesome pix at the track btw!]... and the G is almost half the price of my S4 - with similar performance.

This is the first Nissan product I've had, and definitely going to stick with them when it's time to get a new car -prob. in a few years.

I really do think that after Nissans close encounter with bankruptcy a few years ago - woke up its GIANT --- restructured, and their next 10yr plan is and will remodel the automotive world's standards.

Years ago, it was Honda and its Vtec [first real affective variable valve timing technology that comes with a cheap$] that reshaped performance. Now, it's Nissan's turn to kick some ***!

Starting with the GTR, they've already restructured the industry with over the top performance --- at the cost [70k] similar to or less than most sports/exotics out there!

...excited about the things to come... excited about my next Nissan!

I agree with your analysis of Nissans attempt to change the industry. I think Nissan has single handedly made it possible for the poor guy--like you and me, to be able to afford performance at a reasonable price. 300 horses was the territory of previous muscle cars, and all we could hope for was a dream. Now, that dream is reality. Nissan's push for power and performcae has forced other auto makers to do the same. Well done Nissan.

With all the new cars showing up in 2009 for Infiniti and Nissan, I have to wonder if it will be cheaper for me to just go ahead and add a supercharger in my car versus pumping out all that money for a brand new car?

If the G-50 will produce 400Hp with 8 cylinders, it may well be as fast as a G-35 with a supercharger in V-6. The G-35 would probabaly have a weight advantage over the G-50. And then, we already know all the problems that G-35 has. The G-35 still has a unique and attractive look, even after all these years. Just my 2 cents.

Yes,Definitely cheaper and more readily available to supercharge or turbocharge your G...

I'm just not too sure about the reliability after that --- but then again, you might be ok as long as you get a shop/tech that knows exaclty how to adjust the boost according to the engine's needs and remapping all the engine's timing etc...properly.

I've had friends that turbocharged their cars - and they definitely get more power - but lose top end -... in trade of strong torque.

it could be that the guys that installed the turbo didn't do the right job? - either way, it could be a constant upwards battle to get everthing insync*L

I've never heard of that. If anything I think they would gain top end. Assuming that by top end you mean speed, not power. More power would allow the car to overcome greater drag forces and travel at a higher speed.

Think of the analogy used earlier as a pendulum. You swing it out to one extreme and it swings back to another extreme and in the middle is where one finds relevance, common sense, etc. It's a very good and well known style of writing.

I am wondering, what's the weight difference between 06 coupe and sedan? I know my 08 power advantage and my engine is smoother, but I thought coupe is lighter. Throttle response in my 08 isn't bad though.

Lose top end... meaning power - as in torque is increase at low rpm... but the torque and power seems to taper off as revs increase [top -high rpm]- especially when NEAR redline [not at redline].

Well... all upgrades are different - adding turbo -what type of turbo and what else? -like cold air intake / exhaust -catback or just muffler??? -the combinations are infinite... and it maybe - IN SOME CASES - alot of things need to be added to retain/increase the "top end" power.

Hypothetically, anyone would like to increase torque and hp on their G...even I - so if I were to do it [without budget concerns***], I'd consider a small turbo and also adding:

1 small turbo1 catback exhaust system - maybe Stillen1 full cold air intake1 set of cold air Platinum spark plugs - from NGK5 full days at the shop for remapping/adjusting computer - and possibly getting getting a add-on computer to control the timing etc.

and of course, further chassis stuff... but i'll leave that out.
