not sure how much i used, but i'll probably need more to finish everything up. the truck bed liner dries very hard. im putting thick coats on so its nice and strong and resistant to wear. you'll have to check it out in person

very minor update-basically i've been sick since sunday, and it rained monday and tuesday anyways, so yesterday was the only day i felt good enough to do anything. my original plan was to truck bed line the other rear fender well, but when i got in there to start prepping it, i took a better look at that rusted out area behind the driver side rear wheel (i think you can see it in previous pics). i didnt want to truck bed line over a patch that already had rust so i busted out the dremel and started cutting the inside portion on the rusted patch. basically theres a little grommet back there that lets some water in, and the water doesnt flow out of the grommet as easily as it flows in so with nowhere to go the water sits in there until its rusts. i cut back past the grommet to where there was good metal. im debating whether i should weld a piece in there now to seal it up or if i should leave that cavity open in case any water does get in, then it can easily drain out. i was going to leave the exterior part on the rust back there for later but i had the stuff out so i figured what the hell, and cut that out too. on saturday i'll be cutting a chunk out of my old hatch and welding it in place of the bad section. on to the pics!!

heres the inner part of the rust that was cut out

and heres the exterior part thats gone in favor of good metal

the old piece removed, phuck you, rust!!!

cmoody, if you think THAT is a lot of rust (its not, seen the car in person/worked on it many times already)... then you didnt see the underlying death on his black shell... that thing was a timebomb of rot... hence his getting a new shell, it wasnt just for fun

I've seen some pretty bad ones... A friend of mine had one that had NO frame under it at all! Not one section was still in tact it all rusted off! It amazed me how the thing didn't fall in 2. I posted pic's on my build of the rust issue on my hatch... it's pretty bad but fixable still... I'm just not one to mess with rust! I like my new florida shell non-rusted

I'm feeling too lazy to update, but i will anyways since im not up to anything else right now. I spent a little chunk of Halloween night and saturday afternoon working on the car to make a little more progress. Halloween night got dark so i busted out the flood light.i basically finished prepping the driver side fender well for truck bed liner and started cleaning up the rear subframe.sanding was going pretty slow, so i went on a run to get a rust remover gel that didderson has used with great success and a wire wheel attachment for my drill. i wire wheeled it a little and coated it with the rust remover gel. the bottle said to wait 5-10 minutes for light rust, and since i like to go overboard, i applied a thick coat of the gel to sit and work overnight.i also used the same stuff on my fuel pump cover.

heres the fender well fully truck bed lined.

before-

After-

after even more work heres how i left the subframe, its slowly cleaning up

i spent the rest of the time before work trying to remove the rear tow hook on the exhaust side without cutting it. real pita but i think i can get it. enjoy the update til monday

But luckily - I'm off work today so this mean's I'll get some work done around the house and maybe get my motor swapped over to the new shell...

Also goin to go play guitar with a band tonght So that should be fun have fun at work

this might sound stupid but is truck bed liner a spray on paint or something you do with a brush? it looks really think to come out of a spray can

i want to do this over winter but i will be in a garage so i gotta watch for fumes

so what is your goal WC? having a 180sx type X that's show car condition? There's definitely a lot of patience and attention to detail

hb is right, its duplicolor truck bed liner. its fantastic stuff. great bang for the buck

im uploading pics right now, so i'll have a little update. the truck bed liner is brush one or roll on. there are instructions for using a spray gun though. brushing is what im doing. you should be fine in a garage. the stuff smells a little strong though

i've anticipated this turn of events and have prepared for it

i def dont want it to be a show car, but thats the kind of detail im ending up putting into it. its gonna be my daily that sees track time. the fc is my baby that will be for nice weather only.

uploading pics for an update, sit tight

this isnt a huge update but im happy with the progress i've made in a short time ive had. i had off thursday and saturday last week, but its was raining and miserable both day. no progress was made . i worked 11:30 to 5 on monday and was able to get some work done on the car from 7am til 10:30 and then from like 6pm til 9pm. today was 8 am til 9 pm so no progress from today. i did on monday manage to finish prepping and completely coat the rear subframe with truck bed liner (sorry for the cell phone pics, my camera is mia)

then i started disassembling the the rear uprights, axles and rear lower control arms.

one of the axle boots was ripped so im using the one off of the black car, i also removed the rlca from the upright for ease of pressing out the remaining bushings. im also picking up new rear lower ball joints to go in before everything is reassembled. im dropping the pieces off tomorrow to have the bushings removed.

heres the axle and random hardware

i got some more of the es bushings pressed in as well. i finally got the knack of it and the bushings are going in easy now.

tomorrow im dropping off the the rlcas and uprights for bushing removal. im gonna clean up and remove my other axle needed from the black car, and start sanding down the rear underbody. if i have enough time i'll start coating some of the stuff with truck bed liner. after thats dry i can reinstall the gas tank and so on. i have a bunch of parts coming in that im waiting on, i'll post pics and details as they come in. i'll have more to update tomorrow.

Looks great man, I'm about to drop my rear subframe to fix a stripped diff bolt hole, and I'll probably clean it up nice and shiny like yours then bed liner it before slapping it back in. Luckily the winters down here are nowhere near as harsh as PA so my underbody has like 0 rust haha. Keep it up, it looks like a lot of progress is being made.

Nice job so far jeff. I'm really interested in how the bed liner holds up within a few months of PA driving.Having those nice bushings in next you're going to want solid ones that are included with new PBM parts hehe.

I want to know if the z32 rear knuckles fit the 240 because i read in sport compact car that they did (way back in the day when i read that one).

Ever heard of this? reason being is because we're both working on our subframes...

ey it might be a good time to get some aluminum z32 uprights and drop 14-16 lbs of unsprung weight. IIRC all that is needed is the conical ball joint seat (part # 40173-33P00) which is about 10 bux from the nissan dealer.

really? you can get moog rear ball joints, not b13 **** either, the part number is for the s13

i'd def get z32 uprights but then the stock rear struts would no longer fit

Well there's your excuse to get coils! Problem is finding just s13 fronts and z32 rears.

from what i've read the z32 spring rates woudl not be ideal for teh s13 since theyre designed for a much heavier car. besides i dont have the money to get coils yet. but i will eventually. i just got off work early since i got someone to cover my 2nd shift. i'm going over to work on the car asap
