300 N/A HP in a S chasis just sounds perfect. When I plan on swapping more power in my S13 i think i would put this swap at the top of the list mainly because it should be stone cold reliable. No forced Induction quirks. Not knocking forced aspiration of course

I'd only be interested in the exhaust manifolds. If you read the thread, you'll see that I am using a 350Z ECM and BCM. If he is running that as well, I'd love to hear a story or two about how fast it is. If it's a standalone, well, thats not the route this swap is going. Also, if you look back, you'll see that we had this engine running in this car at Christmas. Glad to hear other people are catching on, and hopefully he's having a blast with it!!!! )

"Be careful if you order bearings. The block is marked as is the crank. Both are needed to get the correct bearing. Nissan has moved away from the 1,2,3,4 days and back to the old Matrix chart."

I don't follow...

"...as with the oil rings, but put those at 45 degrees from the 1st and 2nd rings. Confused yet???? Oh, and line up the oil ring (like a spring) with the 1st ring..."

That seems contradictory.

Not trying to tick you off or anything, I just don't follow what you're saying. Otherwise this looks pretty good. Isn't there a power difference between the '03 Altima and an '03 350Z? Where do you get these blocks and trannys and how much? Would you be able to do a wiring service for people who wanted to do the swap at home but didn't want to/aren't able to do the wiring themselves?

To be N/A or not to be, that is the question.....

I am thinking of having two intake manifolds made. One for N/A, and another for the supercharger. Hood clearance may be a little problem! In any case, it will ultimately be decided upon once the compressions readings are taken.

Later gang......

What it is.....got it assembled.

What it could be with a few hundred bucks at my machine shop. Hmmmmmmmmmm.........

My description of the bearings should be confusing, as you;ll just have to see a service manual to get what I'm saying. And for the rings, its a little easier....put the 1st and 2nd ring 180 degrees off of each other, and the oil rings 45 degrees off of the 1st and 2nd rings, with the middle oil ring lining up with either of the top rings. Again, if you're gonna build an engine, this isnt the page to look at. I was just making comments to give a general idea of what to do. Some people will hop on here, see some pics, and slap an engine together without any research.

As for the 03 altima/350 question. Yes...lol...big difference...but again, if you look at the service manuals, you'll see the cranks are the same, the cams are the same, the pistons are different (dome), the heads are the same, the blocks are different only by mounting locations. My motor has HR pistons. Go to http://www.vq35hr.com for a little bit of what this motor is. NO, the HR is not, in any way, the same as a VQ35DE (well, the 35th anniversarry 350Z VQ35DE has the same cams...but thats it).

Hopefully that helps some. Later!

I imagine that by the time I get the money in line for all this it shouldn't be too expensive to get a VQ35HR block. Or perhaps by then there'll be a new and better swap for the 240sx. The exhaust clip on the site was...wow .

So alls youve been waiting on this entire time is a driveshaft? Dude, you need to find a new driveshaft shop.

when will either of these likely see a dyno? If your 240 with HR pistons puts down 250+whp and 250+wtq NA I'm sold.

Lovin the updates.

Hey gang,

The driveshaft should have been made yesterday. We will know monday.....and yes, ITS ABOUT TIME!!!!

As for my personal engine....I've got some killer news!!!! So you think the HR is a badass motor huh?? Try this out....

We compression tested my motor the other night. Please remember that the engine has been rehoned, so the rings are not set in yet.

At 300 RPM, we got readings of 215-220 psi all cylanders!!! Stock standard is listed as 185 psi. 185-190 psi is equivelant to 10.0 to 10.3:1 compression. Using a compression chart, this motor should be just at 12.0:1 compression. The numbers might go a little higher after a few thousand miles and at operating temperature. I dont see it going much higher than 230 psi though.

Please excuse my artwork...its MS paint..not the best.

So basically, the HR is cool and all, but if your going to build a VQ35 with stock nissan parts, just use the HR pistons in the DE block. And the honda guys thought swaping their slugs was cool.....lets see them build a motor with stock parts and get over 350 crank HP. As for power to the wheels.....we're gonna get this running good first, then install a set of HR cams. Those should bump us another 10 HP. Add the greddy emanage ultimate and V-Manage controller and we might get even more.

More pics of the motor comming. Later gang!

Oh, and the Central 20 Japan 3.91 gear set....yeah, its just a J30 Ring and Pinion set with redfilled holes on the ring for the 13mm bolts. Just figured I'd drop the bomb on that one, since they are charging so much for it. You can also try using a combination of any 12 tooth pinion and 47 tooth ring you want...but it might get a little noisy.

A few more pics:

This is my motor. The oil cooler is shown as well. I paid $15.00 for the oil cooler, block adapter and lines. This setup is from a SAAB 9000S turbo. Happy junkyard hunting!

A pic of the oil cooler block adapter. Yes, the SAAB unit fits perfectly. Just use an oil cooler fitting from the regular VQ35 so you have the correct oil filter threads.

Pic from the top. I still have some painting to do, as you can see. Some of the lines arent straigh and I have some overspray. There are a few places I will hand paint, then I can wetsand.

Another pic of the setup.

This is a rear view. Notice the water piping does NOT exit the right or left of the engine, as it normaly does on the VQ35DE (FWD =drivers exit, RWD = passenger exit). This is the water pipe from the HR. Its slightly wider, meaning I'll have to hog out the coolant openings to match them. Also, this allows the water pipe to be hidden under the intake manifold, and will exit through the hole in the front, through the timing cover. This setup allows for the air to be removed from the engine easier, as the filler neck is located above the block, at the front of the motor.

Later gang!

Oh, and being as we are on Page 8 now. Please go back to page 7 and see the compression chart I displayed. It shows the bump in compression from the HR pistons.

Tilleys said something about using pathfinder VTCs with a vq30 ecu and harness. Are the VTCs from the 3.5 pathfinder different then the the rest of the vq35 series? Are they early vtec style, on/off, instead of continuously variable? How feasable is it to use the vq30 harness with the pathy timing cover? BTW your motor looks sweet.

Lets get you on the right path, you have good ideas, but they arent quite compatible. First off, the VQ30 did NOT come with VTC, so using VTC cam caps on those heads will do several things (bad). There are no passages in the VQ30 head for oil to the VTC solenoid, second, the VQ30 ECM will NOT control VTC solenoids (no function). Third, the VTC solenoids all work the same way, they have a duty cycle that controls how much retard or advanced the cams will move. Using a VQ30 harness will get the motor running (VQ35) but will not work with a 350Z ecm (different plugs). In my own opinion, the only good way to go is VQ35 stuff. You can use a 2000-2001 Pathfinder ECM and wiring if you want to avoid the throttle by wire, but you will also see less HP, lower RPM range and more VTC problems (solenoids and sensors constantly go bad on that motor). THough the 2000 pathfinder VQ35 is exactly the same block as a 350z. I guess you could run a VQ30 harness with an emanage and V-manage controller, but I havent read up on the V-manage, so Im not sure if it can soley operate VTC. Hope this helps!

I guess i needed to do some more research. I was talking about using a Pathy timing cover and VTC on a vq35 block and heads w/ vq30 harness and ecu and an rpm switch, just to clear things up. Check this out http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=412405 , those maxima guys are real pioneers.

I see what your saying. Well, the use of an rpm activated switch set to a precise duty cycle will give you a cam advance at one point. It's a good way to get around using the newer stuff, but your not getting the full advantage of the newer ecm. I'd still try to stay with the newer stuff. But hey, just like I like the newer stuff, that might not be what works for others. I understand that most of you guys dont get the price breaks I get, so using newer stuff is out of the question.....trust me, if I had to pay list for my stuff (even just the engine parts) would have cost me more than I could swing this soon. Thats cool what the Maxima guys did. There are alot of things people are running that you'ld never think of. Craziest of all, is there are alot of people I know that dont even post on here and they have some really good ideas as well. So I guess, do what you think will work best for you.....engine wise and cost wise. You cant go wrong if your happy with what you build (to hell with everyone else!!!! thats what I say )

Hey gang, did everyone see the Import Tuner this month? It has a VQ35 in a 240sx convertible with an S14 front conversion (mean eyes). The car is pretty sick, except they only made 226ish HP to the wheels. They said this is better than stock, yet we have dyno'd G35's with nothing more than an air filter and cat back that made 235 RWHP. The car is really impressive though, and the motor bay looks clean (mainly because they used a standalone). They say the new motor (in it by now) is the 4.1 stroker VQ. Wicked! That kit costs a ton. Perosonally I'd use a VQ40 bottom end with aftermarket pistons, bolt a pair of 07 altima heads on it, change the valve covers to the ones on the 07Z and wire it all up. There you have it, a VQ40HR. Wishful thinking.....even used 07 heads are going for $450/each. Too much to invest without more research. Maybe if I get a blown motor from work I can put that together on here. For now, I'll stick with my VQ35HC (High Compression).

Oh, and I picked up another S13....Im so stoked...I finaly own a coupe!

Lovin it, S13 hatch and coupe. Now, what do we put in the coupe???? VK?

THANKS! Im glad to see some links to his car. I was very impressed withe the effort put into that vehicle. The shop that did the work did some serious sculpting. It's nice to put motors in, and make cars fast, but it still doesnt turn heads like a good body job. I've been interested to see what the output of the 4.1L/4.3L upgrades are. AEBS makes a killer setup for the VQ, which should be capable of 1400+ hp (as long as the rest of the components are up to par). They offer low and high compression setups. They are quite expensive, and finding a machinist worthy of installing their product is hard to come by. I'll check out the links when I have more time to devote to them. Been a long day. As for the car this thread started for, it should be getting shipped to my house to be finished here, sometime this week. Hopefully I can get it all wrapped up and video up soon. Bout time.

OK gang,

More news, the car is getting shipped to my shop at my house tomorrow. It will then recieve the next step in wiring. Thought I was done did you?.....yeap me too. But we just found out we have to run the control unit for the gauges (called Unified Meter Control Unit and AC Amp). We need this because without a properly function Malfunction Indicator Lamp, we will get stuck in FAIL SAFE.....or in general terms, without the bulb we get a 2400 rpm redline with no more than 10 degrees throttle angle.

Pretty crappy, but no biggie. The CAN lines are like power wires, you can tap into them anywhere and the computers will immediately start talking (as long as all the other wiring is done). So now we will have an ECM, a BCM and a Unified Meter. Not much more work but allows us to use so many more functions of the newer techknowledgy in this car.

Pics comming as soon as I get my hands on the car.

Later all!

Mark

CAN WE ALL SAY "FINALLY"

The thick one was made using a G35 sedan drive shaft. The thin one was made using the 350Z driveshaft. While the thinner one is a few pounds lighter, the thicker one has a better ratio (shaft to joint size). Both will withstand way more power than we are making. The thicker one is going into the car that started this thread. The thinner one is going behind my motor.

No time to work on it tonight, just got the car to my shop at home. Planning on taking the headers to work tomorrow to get some more work done on them.

I don't really like the sound of his exhaust. It sounds too hollow, which is what gives fartcans their distinctive note. It still sounds decent, but IMHO, the fast intentions exhaust I linked to in the dual exhaust thread sounds much much better.

Though you reply is not really relevent to this particular thread, I will keep that in mind for this project. We are hoping for a deep rich sound that has no rasp to it at all. Close to the Z sound, just add a few decibles.

Can't say as to the actual sound of it on a VQ35DE but I think a Flowmaster would probably give a deeper sound to the car like you want...

The clip is by the lower-left corner of the muffler pic. Maybe you'll want a different series/piping size, but it's a thought.

Which is why I posted. The fast intentions exhaust sounds almost like the stock g35 exhaust except a bit deeper and a bit louder. I posted links to vid/sound clips in the other thread. Out of all the g35/350z exhausts I have heard, the FI system sounds the best.

I will not be using something prefabed. The exhaust must fit the 240sx. We do have a few extra N1 exhausts laying around, and that may do, but most likely we will be making the entire exhaust system and just purchasing a muffler. Also, on the G/Z, the use of a stock style high flow muffler tends to be the best for keeping the sound down at higher RPMs while the use of duals is just plain raspy. I see them all day long at the dealership. Everything from Thermal and Nismo down to your no name stuff that probably cost $50 (and sounds that way!).
