The bottom line is: There's good and bad everywhere except, maybe Islamabad, Pakistan and Gary, Indiana (my own negative observations of Gary) .

It's a matter of finding a place that fits your lifestyle and for you has way more positives than negatives. As a native Californian who has travelled 46 of the lower 48 states there are actually a few places that I would rather live but right now the family support group is here. With my parents in their 80s and not in perfect health we're not ready to leave. Maybe when our kids hit college and my wife retires.

I've lived all over the place from backwoods to big cities. I loved Chicago when living there as a kid, dislike it now as an adult. Atlanta was great but became simply too crowded. Birmingham was dirty (late 70's, might be better now? ), Middle GA was OK for the 1.5 years I was there but there's too little to do. With family moving away from Atlanta, and me raising two small daughters by myself, I moved to the Louisville area as my sister lived here. I've lived here once before so it was not that big of a change, but Louisville itself had grown up and since then has turned into an awesome city with a nice downtown bar scene including open-aired nightly and weekend entertainment along with a great waterfront park with free weekend concerts. There is always something to do around here if that's your "cup of tea". Heck, even my neighborhood isn't too bad if you ignore the boat marina at the end of my street...

Being 1.5 hours from both Indy and Cincy is a plus as well. Hell, it used to take me longer than that to get home after work in Atlanta.

I spent two yrs living in Louisville in Crescent Centre (2nd and Broadway). I did not like the city much. Yeah, some cool spots and awesome riverfront, but the people seemed to be stuck 50 years in the past. It was very segregated, which I'm not used.

I spent a lot of weekends in East Louisville, like Jillians and some other bars over that way.

One great thing about Luhvul was all the old houses. Some very nice historic homes near downtown.

Since we're talking about cities we like, I just spent a week in NYC (mostly Queens) and I am officially in love. So many people and cultures, never run out of things to do, and everybody fits in somewhere. IMO, best city in the US...

I lived in J-town from '79-83 and that area has simply grown up too much. Way too much traffic for my tastes now. I really like it when rush hour only takes me an additional 10 minutes to get home here

I worked in the Aegon tower for a couple years and loved lunch during the summer time. You are somewhat correct in the segregation but it's not by design or intent. West side is a pretty bad section of town and the housing areas around the hospitals downtown is not that great either. I see most cities this way now. The way L'vlle is today is way different than it was in the late 70's when the waterfront was pretty much a mixture of steel recyling yards and the slaughter houses.

There are aspects of Atlanta I miss but when you work 8 years off Ashford Dunwoody Rd and live in Gwinnett county (Lawrenceville - Suwannee) you get tired of traffic.

West Louisville sucks. If you find a Church's chicken, liquor store and check cashing place on the same corner, you know youre in a bad neighborhood.

Atlanta traffic sucks. And its only getting worse.

I imagine there are a lot of things you don't understand. The fact that I am not a republican for instance. Why people would not want to live in a state that crushes liberty for another. The K alludes to the communist state you love so much. But you were being facetious now weren't you comrade?

1. In-state residents (Democrat and Republican) sometimes do the same too. What does Republicanism, or out of state-ness have to do with it?

2. Writing it as "L" better teflects the way it is pronounced by our current governor ... in whose native (I believe) language, "C" is pronounced like "S", not "K". So, the name of the state would be written with the letter "K" in German to make it sound that way.

only if you had said Mrs Winner's. They have the best biscuits...

Motorboats are fun but sailing is an involved sport (I use sport loosely). I thought it was lame til I tried it. I went sailing on a 40ft boat in Chesapeake Bay. My friend showed me some basic things and it was incredibly fun. To me, its like manual vs auto transmission. You can sit back and just steer, or you can drive the boat.

I was thinking about going liva abord when I go back. Powerboats seemed a waste as the thing would be docked 99% of the time but sailboats just aren't "me." Then it hit me, mofukin tugboat bishes!

ok, but how does the letter K represent communism? I'm not sure how a single letter of the alphabet got to be known as the mascot for communism. Please, elaborate.

Manifesto of the Communist Party, usually referred to as The Communist Manifesto, plays a large part of it. Maybe you've heard of it, if not you can probably learn about it on Wikipedia.

Anyway, it was originally penned in German, where the title reads Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei. You see, the word Kommunistischen starts with the letter K, so California becomes Kalifornia - with a K. Get it?

Next I'll explain to you why so many locations in the US have Washington in the name.

Is that it? just the german part? Seems like a pretty outdated and obscure reference then.

And I'm STILL waiting for an explanation on how exactly CA "crushes the liberty" of other states.

Typical of a partisan person reading through a filter, you took that sentence out of context. When contained in a full quote it is easy to see it was item two of a two item list.

lame attempt at deflection K, even for you. You like government standing on your throat, fine, stay there in the land of sun, CARB, AWB, furloughs, IOUs and green extremism.

I never thought you were republican and I wasn't referring to you either when I asked the question about repubs spelling my state's name with a K.

Also, you still have yet to EXPLAIN just how exactly California crushes liberty for other states. But, keep dancing around the question till your hearts content.

Also, how am I a partisan person when I recently made a celebratory thread about Obama's failure in health care? Typical of a republican in disguise of the "independent" label to make such an assumption.

The response was for the condemnation of California in general. People seem to have selective amnesia. A great amount of good comes out of this state, too.

I supported R.R. and even have a picture of me sitting in his chair at the governor's office in Sacramento. That said, today's "conservative" followers of R.R. have taken it to an extreme and are only interested any more in what's in it for them and how can they "expletive deleted" everyone else in their quest for the almighty dollar. R.R. had a lot more compassion in him than today's vocal "conservatives" who only claim they're following his teachings.

Count me, then, as a "R.R. Independent".

I agree that the far right has "adopted" RR as their guy, when in reality, he was a little more centrist than they care to remember.

Yeah, but the repubs always conveniently forget that their god reagan came from this state. If it wasn't for CA reagan would have NEVER been prez.

You're Welcome, Middle America.

Actually, I'm kind of ashamed that he came from our state for this reason:

CIA and Contras cocaine trafficking in the US

Quote »On April 17, 1986, the Reagan Administration released a three page report acknowledging that there were some Contra-cocaine connections in 1984 and 1985, arguing that these connections occurred at a time when the rebels were "particularly hard pressed for financial support" because U.S. aid had been cut off. The report admitted that "We have evidence of a limited number of incidents in which known drug traffickers have tried to establish connections with Nicaraguan resistance groups." The report tried to downplay the drug activity, claiming that it took place "without the authorization of resistance leaders."[/quote]

Except RR was actually from Tampico, Illinois and did not move to CA until the 1930's due to his acting career. The only President we have had that was initially from CA was.......Richard Nixon
