Hmm, makes me wonder why they chose the names they did. Good stuff, basic yet complex in meaning, or interpretation of meaning.
Neo, meaning "new", "recent", "latest", or "in a new, different, or modified way". the new "one" of this version of the matrix??
Morpheus: morphe, "one who shapes dreams." Greek myth: "the god who shapes dreams." interesting considering Neo has a dream that actually turns out to be the future. Also, in the first movie he rambles on about "dream world", and in the second, as his ship is destroyed he mumbles about he had dreamed...something i couldn't hear, as there was a fat chick in front of me ruining the movie for me.
Trinity: one of many biblical references in the matrix movies. the condition of being three. the unity of three divine persons. could this be a reference to the three main characters neo, morpheus, and her being the final part of a trinity? doubt it, just a cool chick name maybe.
Zion: another biblical reference: heaven, or 'the heavenly city". clearly represented in the movies as the last and only safe place for humans.
Nebuchadnezzar: biblical again, a king of babylonia, conquered Jerusalem, destroyed the temple, deported many Israelites to Babylon, taking with him the young, strongest, and most intelligent of the Jews. Also he oredered three men who believed in God into a fiery furnace, all of whom were unharmed by the fire. OK, so I've just read way too much into this, as it's a cool name for a ship and that should be good enough.
Smith: hmm, the most common last name, perfect for agents who are basically identical in appearance, and essentially nameless and featureless. the perfect line: Morpheus: "and you are?" Smith: "a smith" Morpheus:"you all look the same to me" There's a reverse of a racially motivated joke there, and it's perfect for the movie involving agents that could be considered a type of "clone". anyways,
Nihlism: subject of the chapter of the book which neo opens in his apartment in the first movie...get this: "the denial of any basis for knowledge or truth. the general rejection of customary beliefs in morality, religion, etc". Also: "the belief that there is no meaning or purpose in existence. the doctrine that existing social, political, and economic institutions must be completely destroyed in order to make way for new institutions".... quite an interesting very small bit that they put in the first movie. I noticed the chapter title while viewing the movie in the theater, but it's almost impossible to read on a regular sized home tv.
Oracle: derived from the latin word "oraculum", which means "divine anouncement". other definitions: "the medium by which deities are consulted."
finally, matrix: webster defines the word matrix as: 1.the womb. 2.that within which, or within and from which, something originates, takes form, or developes. There's a couple of other definitions as well...but whatever.
