This will be one sweet setup.I wouldn't even think about street tires and the r200 for a drag car. You'll be spinning more than you'll bite.Nothing but a big one legger burnmark all the way down.G.L.

Please put a vinyl top on it, baseball caps on the rear speaker deck, and whitewalls to complete the theme. You would be my hero.

Now for some bad news and good news, I disassembled the heads today to see what the damage is:

After hitting one side with a wire wheel... look how thick it is!

And for the good:

Woo hoo! I'm probably just going to deglaze the cylinders with a ball hone and install the pistons as-is. All the bores look spectacular.

The heads will need some cleaning and the exhaust valves will need to be ground and reseated Intake valves look great once the horrible gunk is wire wheeled and a little lapping compound should re-seat them nicely.

Interestingly, only the valves on the secondary ports(the ones with the secondary butterflies closed off until 4000 rpms or whatever and have no fuel injector) had the gummed up valves. The primaries were pretty clean apart for some surface rust. Once wire wheeled, they all look great. Exhaust valves are pitted along the valve seat and will need to be reground otherwise they won't hold compression. Other than that, all is well in the head department.

I even made my own even flow cooling mod today out of some steel plate and a piece of coolant hard line. Looks good and should work great.

that was a bunch of crap on those valves. Is it me, or can I still see the criss hatch pattern onthe cylinder walls?

That's par for the course for modern engines - The cylinder walls don't wear because the rings are the softer material... My VH45DE still had clear crosshatching after 130K miles.

This project is spectacularly awesome. Keep on it!!!!

And now some of the actual car... The interior is completely stripped out and most of it is in the trunk. We are going through every piece. Here is my brother dis-assembling some heating and AC stuff to clean and inspect. Heater core and AC evaporator seem to be in good shape with no leaks.

And the car, he shot great stuff in all the voids in the frame for sound deadening. Tapping on the body in various places shows it really made a difference in noise.

No, we are not stripping the stock sound deadening stuff either. Thats some ricer stuff I'm not worried about an extra 10 lbs of sound deadening if it makes the comfort level inside much more tolerable. In fact, we are putting carpets , headliner, and everything back in once the cage is welded in. More updates later tonight!

Or you could remove the stock deadening and put down new sound deadening material.

Took the block and heads to the machine shop today... valves are getting cut, heads resurfaced, block, heads, valvecovers cleaned, etc. Bearings should be in next week so I should start final assembly soon. The transmission is getting ordered monday. The car should start coming together eventually!

Quick question... one of the rear sail windows is busted out and needs to be replaced. I'm having a hard time locating a replacement and am considering just sticking some tinted polycarbonate in there instead (both sides). Has anyone ever done this? Do you think there much of an issue with UV yellowing?

I don't think we are going to be putting passenger seats back in unless they are the cheap racing seats we have sitting in the garage so passenger visibility isn't really an issue.
