The thickness of a sound deadening material does play a part in its main objective, however the majority of the sound deadening is achieved simply by not allowing the metal panels to vibrate and thus transfer sound into the cabin. The rubbery texture and density of the backing is what achieves this deadening.

The pillow stuffing will also help by creating more obstacles for sound to travel through. Without the stuffing, sound will hit the rear QP, which will transfer the sound into the space between the QP an interior wall, which will then vibrate and transfer the sound into the cabin. Putting insulation (in this case pillow stuffing) in that space means that sound will require more amplitude to go through both metal surfaces and the insulation, effictively making the cabin quieter.

Think of it this way- Sound is really nothing but vibrating air. Deadening metal panels and insulating spaces between such panels that are prone to vibration will keep sound from transferring as easily.

Hope this all makes sense, I'm used to dealing with acoustics in live show venues and recording studios, which I am actually in the process of building right now. Just finished a nightclub in stockton and remodeling a venue into a nightclub in Alameda, Hopefully my recording studio will be finished sometime mid February. /threadjack.

Oh and thanks for the tip on material selection, Zach. PS not sure if this was mentioned, but please do give us a rough figure on the cost of materials involved when all is said and deadened.

No trouble at all, you really just need to be conscientious of the location of all the bolt holes.

No there is no odor at all, except for when I actually burnt the stuff with the heat gun. haha,
mudvayne9790 wrote:NICE whats the pillow stuffing for?
Like Tsukiko said, it's just more material for the sound waves to pass through.

No prob, there was just now way I could just not let people know about this.So far I have done the entire hatch including inside the quarter panels, the doors, and the back seat walls, and I have spent $60 and have almost a whole roll left.

fixed. thought this may clear up any questions.

I may end up doing something very similar to this, but i want to record the decibel readings inside the car before and after just to put a scientific number on how much it really helps.

i was going to ask how you planned on servicing power options with all the holes in the door covered up, nut then i saw that you have crank windows. i may have to try this out on the s14 come spring time.

only thing now im thinking of now is. What happens when the tar dries out and becomes hard? since there's no actual insulation. its all tar and sheathing. but that might not even matter being that its not exposed to the elements like it would be on a roof. so maybe it will last years

I would think that it would last decades considering that its made for on top of roofs on houses.

holy hell this thread if full of win. Inexpensive alternative to dynamat with more to love. I first thought the short roll would more of a hassle then the wider rolls of fatmat/dynamat. Thinking about it though, it would be far easier to work with.

You found it at lowes? I searched my local one for an hour and couldn't find it. I guess I'll have to go to some of the other ones around town.

sweet im gonna try this for sure next week after i swap out my rear subframe and put my new one in. and ill let you know how it goes. besides the places you already mentioned putting the Peel & Seal, are there any other places? such as in the engine bay maybe? even tho that would cause the engine bay to overheat and be too shiny haha

I went and got some stuff called tite seal or something like that. its the same stuff and was right next to it. It came in a roll of 9"x32' versus the 6"x25' of the peel and seal. I paid nine bucks with my brothers 20% off(he works there) and just did the rear deck around the speakers and the back of my car seat, and its awesome. It took away a good bit of the trunk noise and road noise just from that little section. I cant wait for my dynamat to come. I plan on doing the inside of my plastic panels with this stuff the main areas with dynamat. Anyone wanting a decent ride quality, this stuff probably has the greatest effect with a low price AND doesn't add a ton of weight

I am gonna be doing under the seats and the fire wall. Pretty much the whole cabin. haha. My friend jarrett wants to do under the hood, I can tell you how that goes after he does it...

Of course it doesn't smell right now. Wait for summer time and tell us what you think. I've thought about using this stuff before but the thought of the inside of my car smelling like tar has always been a deterent.
