Such is the difficulty of sound deadening. Low frequencies are incredibly difficult to nail down because of their omnidirectional characteristics and huge wavelengths. The lower the frequency, the longer the wavelength.

Check this out... the human hearing range is theoretically 20Hz to 20KHz.linky for those who want an idea of wavelengths... http://www.mcsquared.com/wavelength.htmI plugged in 40Hz, a bass frequency fairly common in hiphop and electronic music. The wavelength doesnt complete its cycle till its 28.25 ft from its source. s***s crazy.

That is crazy. Do you think closed cell material would help?

As far as the low frequencies from a 3" exhaust, I would have to lean towards not very much. As large as the frequency waves are, I think it would be a bandaid on a bullet wound. Keep in mind the speed of sound is constant across the frequency spectrum, at least in a vacuum. Wind will play a small factor.

I really want to hop in my car with an RTA and analyze the frequencies in my car. I kinda wish I hadnt put down the rubberized coating in the rear of the interior. Just for a before and after. I wonder if the frequencies are low enough from my exhaust that it would simply engulf the car. We all know a KA with the right exhaust has a pretty deep tone.

That would be interesting to see.

Did the rubber undercoating help any? I am figuring that the spray on sound deadening cant be far off from rubber undercoating.

i believe WC did the entire underside of his car in bedliner/hard rubber coating.

It did help a great deal, but not quite as effective as proper sound deadener. I didnt put the coating on for sound reasons to begin with, it was just kindof a bonus.

I still plan on re carpeting and putting in some stick on deadening as well.

do you think using that peel and seal stuff on the underside of the car would work as well? or only that spray stuff?

I see it falling off due to weather and wind. I would just spray it.

This is one of the most awesome threads I have stumbled upon by accident. I wish I had heard of this stuff 15 years ago when I first started doing budget stereo installs.

A note on spray on rubberized undercoatings though: I wouldn't advise using anything specified as an undercoating on the interior. Yes it will dampen sound and even help with some rattles ... but it does get a little sticky/nasty when it gets warm out. I never noticed a smell with it or had it scrape or peel off though.

Cheers

Found the same stuff under a different name at Home Depot-

These are pics of me using it in my GTI. I noticed a SIGNIFICANT drop in road and exhaust noise. It took about 3- 3.5 rolls to do the trunk, 1/4 panels, and front door panels. I imagine it will take another 1- 1.5 rolls to do my complete roof and pillars next.

WARNING- some people mentioned that there is no odor, but I have noticed the odor everytime I get in my car. It smells a lot like gear oil, but a worthwhile tade-off in my opinion. I'm hoping that this summer it will get worse and then fade away from the temp increase, but not sure.

You noticed a difference by only putting that much on your doors?

Yes. In one of the pics you can see the factory deadening material, it's still a major improvement. Most of the reduction comes from keeping the sheet metal from vibrating, which transfers noise easily and even amplifies it at times. So even the 70% coverage I did makes a large difference on killing vibration. It's obvious every time I open my door or tap on the exterior sheet metal. Just a dull thud. The trunk and wheel wells got closer to 90% because of the exhaust and road noise. I'll probably do closer to 95% coverage on the roof and c-pillars. Those take a lot of direct heat, so complete coverage is ideal for temperature insulation and sound deadening.

I also didn't have the patience to do a seamless job. The few pieces I pre-cut lost shape quickly once they were applied. It does really well for conforming to all angles and dips, but it still changes direction and length. So you end up with a lot of weird shaped gaps. I'm too old to spend more than an hour hunched over in the back of my hatchback. So that's what it got.

I also used it to fix a leak in my rain gutter

lol yea he put must of it on the inside should deaden sound from outside but i would think the speakers would make the part people usually do (the part u kinda skimped on) vibrate since u only put a few patchesso heres mine

passenger side that i ended up redoing so it looks like the driver door but i forgot to take pics after i redid it

the speakers i put in (alpine)

it prolly took one roll to do both doors if i didnt do the passenger side again

gonna do the trunk when i get some time

Yes I did the outer skin of the door. After all, that is where the traffic and road noise comes from

Besides my stock 5.5" speakers don't cause any vibrations while listening to talk radio. The less outside noise you hear, the more inside noise (that radio thing) you hear.

I was more after the road noise and ended up helping my stereo system in the end...
