Nissan spent a LOT of time- money and ad time to rebuild faith in the CVT technology.
Speak to them personally please..

Direct copy from warrantee "what is covered"
TRANSMISSION AND TRANSAXLE

Case and all internal parts, torque converter and converter
housing, automatic transmission control module, transfer
case and all internal parts, seals and gaskets, clutch cover
and housing, and electronic transmission controls.

I point to the key words ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION CONTROLS for you to use, of which the solenoid is one. When you talk to the dealer and Nissan refer to their warrantee which leaves no room for interpretation by the dealer. .
There is no room for opinion when its in black and white.
The following page in the manual has a listing of "what is NOT covered".
No mention of anything pertaining to transmission controls.

Thanks for the info everyone. They are looking into it as I write, but something tells me I will be meeting resistance. They don't seem interested in fixing this under any type of warranty. The woman in service keeps repeating "The powertrain is the engine and transmission only" I'll call Nissan and see if that gets me anywhere.

Does anyone have instructions on removing the console? I had the top portion off a few weeks ago, but you can't get to the solenoid without the whole console coming off. I didn't attempt it because I didn't want to damage it.
Thanks again

I found the manual and I'll probably just tackle this myself. I'd rather have that aggravation than arguing with the service dept. As long as they'll sell me the parts.

Thanks everyone.

Hi, My 2008 Rogue, with 32000 miles just passed the 36/36 warranty in Sept. but will not shift out of park. After taking it to a Dallas dealer, they wanted to fix some brake switch (and did) for $180. but now say the problem isn't fixed and want to replace the entire steering column for $800 some dollars! They said the initial switch fix was still necessary! Am calling Nissan North America tomorrow. Hope something can be done! HLReid

Were there any warning symptoms or did it just completely fail? There are moments like this when I am happy that have a 5 year, 100,000 extended warranty

I am another victim to the Shift Interlock problem.

I went into a Nissan dealership in a neighbouring town, only to have the service man laugh when I mentioned I did some queries online about this problem. He mention he always laughs when people do that. I inquired about the problem I was having despite his attitude and his reply was, "yes, I have heard about this happening". So he acknowledged there was a problem and not just one or two cases, enough that he clearly knew what I was talking about. I tried to get an idea of cost and he was very rude by telling me that it would first have to be "hooked up to the diagnostic machine and that costs money and then once we know the exact problem then there would be that cost". Really? Thanks Tips. I had to turn around and walk out because I was disgusted with this guy.

A week later I called Nissan Canada. They advised that this problem would not be cover. The warranty ended at 60,000. My Rogue is around 67,000. This just started happening a couple of weeks ago. I chatted with a local garage and was quoted $1000 to $1,500. Also explained about my treatment at the dealership and they advised they would not do anything for me on that matter either.

stay tuned.

I would be interested in hearing about how many people have had this covered, sounds like there are a couple.

You have idiots for a dealer and a fool for a mechanic Jam a old key in the manual unlock(described in a earlier post) and get a real mechanic to do the work. The part runs 100$ US or so and the secondary switch is 20- Putting it in is a snap when following the manual.. any reputable mechanic can do fo 90 min labor.

Having the same issue with 2008 Rogue. It's apparently a common issue. I am beyond warranty but given the nature of the problem and the number of visits to dealership I've had to make because of CVT, I expected some goodwill. Nothing from dealer or Nissan. Frustrating to see the inconsistency in how customers are treated.

IT is now a safety issue. If you have a accident from not being able to move with the trans locked out from this problem it is a liability problem for Nissan
Best example is being rear ended at a train crossing. Most people around here wait for long trains in park. One day soon there will be a death incurred and its unfortunate that sometimes it takes death to get a manufacturer to fix a known problem. From the Datsun days I have been a fan but now I have lost faith in the brand since they do not back their product.

So now it's time to get someone in the media involved and see if they will do a story on this. Anything we can do to get this into the spotlight will help expose this issue. Does anyone have any contacts at any of the automobile publications? While I am still under my extended warranty, I know the day after it expires will be the day mine will fail.

Well, recieved the final estimate today to replace the shifter: Part 509.64, labour 191.92 for total of $701.56. I have had the solenoid changed twice with no success. I will continue to unlock the shifter manually until Nissan agrees to fix or they get it back like this at the end of the lease in about 3 months.

As far as the part is concerned, thay are referring to the complete shifter assembly. The dealer explained to me that the service bulletin claims that changing the "solenoid" should fix the problem. The first one fixed the problem temporarily (about 5 shifts). The dealer claimed that the solenoid was faulty so they changed it but with the same result. They went back to Nissan who told them to change the entire assembly.

There was no mention of a second switch....which manual are you referring to?

thx

Read thru it and note the relationship of switches. Note if you can mechanically bypass the switches and use the shifter just fine it is NOT a mechanical fault- it is electrical.

I faxed my complaint to Nissan Canada at tel # 7053303052.

Someone called me back to acknowledge the receipt of the fax and mentioned that she will will take note of it and will have someone review it. I specifically asked if someone will officially respond to the specifics that I mentioned in my complaint (e.g. that it seems this is not an isolated "defect" and others have already encountered the same problem for a specific year/make of their product, Nissan Rogue 2008). She said she'll take a note my request for an official response. She said that IF this becomes a valid recall, Nissan will reimburse expenses related to fix such defect.

I asked what Nissan consumers like us should do when we experience similar problems. She said that we should communicate it to them. She said if many will send the same complaint to them, they get "highlighted" and get looked at much faster.

Here's what I suggest to those who experienced this specific problem. Please fax your complaint to Nissan Canada at 7053303052 AND send me also a copy of your fax (indicate when it was faxed). Send me a fax copy at 18773289522 or a scanned copy at [email protected].

Once I have enough copies of those of you who will communicate your complaints, I'll look for the proper office in the Canadian government who can help us in the event we don't get a reasonable response from Nissan Canada. If you can also indicate where I can best reach you about this complaint, that will be most helpful.

when this problem happens, check to see if your brake lights are lighting up. it might be 1 of the 2 sensors/switches activated by the brake pedal.

take notice that normally you hear a click when in park and pressing the brake pedal. this is the mechanism that unlocks the shifter - does it click when it doesnt wanna let you shift? (probably its not clicking hence why you can unlock the shifter by pressing in the button)

wrote that up on 3/16/2012 and still works great for me at 5/24/2012 :) some might call it TEMP, but i call it a PERM fix for this annoying problem. Being out of warranty - i wont risk spending $500-$600 on a new shifter assembly only to have it go out in another 30,000 miles. ;)

Our 2008 SL AWD with 75k miles on it recently had this problem...our dealer estimated we needed the shift/brake interlock solenoid. Just got it changed...our's had seized. $314 US. Since we will probably get over 100K miles before a brake job I consider us lucky.

Thankful

We had a similar issue and believed it was the Shift Interlock Solenoid, but after further inspection we found that it was the shifter position switch activation arm. The arm on needs to be slightly bent in so that it closes the shifter position switch when the shifter is in park. The shifter position switch in the right side of the shifter assembly.
