Yeah, definitely get your complaint escalated. There is no way they should not be replacing this part for free to you. Tell them compensation is their issue with Nissan corporate. There's been what, 5 cases of this happening now? All in the span of just a few weeks. Us Rogue owners on NicoClub are but a small pool of Rogue owners out there. I'm confident this is a larger issue.

Complain to the service manager, maybe even bring print-outs of this thread to show him that it's an issue for him to take up with Nissan corporate. And if he's still unwilling to budge, move your complaint up to Nissan corporate. Again, I'd mail copies of this thread to document that this is a widespread issue they need to resolve.

Question for everyone who's had this issue: what's your year and trim of Rogue that this has happened on? I'm curious to see just what specific Rogues have had this failure.
I had the solenoid fail on my 2008 Rogue SL AWD w/ paddle shifters.

I'll upload a pic of this access point to bypass solenoid- and it's right in front of our faces too. If they didnt expect problems there would be no need for bypass systems like this
The bypass can also be used to shift to neutral if your vehicle is disabled (dead battery) and needs to be moved.

My 2008 rogue won't shift out of park. The dealer says it is not covered under the powertrain warranty. Dealer is replacing the shift control assembly. I've read other posts of Nissan covering the "brake shift solenoid" under the powertrain warranty which is a component of the shift control assembly. How do I get this covered? Will cost $650 to fix problem.

Definitely follow Philipa's advice. This is a widespread problem with 2008 Rogues (happened to mine and several other forum members) and others have gotten theirs replaced free of charge by escalating their issue to Nissan corporate.
The dealer isn't readily willing to fix it for free because it's more work for them to get ahold of Nissan and if they say no, they obviously don't want to do it for free. But if the issue gets escalated to Nissan corporate and they agree to fix it for free, the dealer will get paid to do the work.

Thanks for the advice. I am waiting to hear from Nissan corporate. They said they would get back to me by the end of the day with their decision.

Nissan Corporate is not willing to cover this repair in the amount of $680. I spoke with a "regional specialist" and she said it is a basic item only covered under the 36/36 warranty. My car is 38 months old with 45,000 miles. I'm going to take this further in writing with all this information from NICOclub.com. Hopefully that will help.

Way too many posts on this problem for three year old vehicles. And what kind of a percentage of owners with the problem even know about this website? Keep onto Nissan about this!

Keep in mind that most owners come to forums like this to find solutions to their problems. You almost never hear about those that are 'trouble free'. It's very difficult to make conclusions based on such small samples... a handful of owners among hundreds of thousands. At best it's a guess!

That being said, by all means keep after Nissan regarding these issues. There is a chance it could bring about a service bulletin that may help fellow Rogue owners down the road!

And for the record, my 2008 SL has 84,000mi on the clock (140,000km) and I don't have a problem with the shifter... knock on wood!

Having same issue here. 08 SL AWD with paddles. The dealer told me entire shifter assembly had to be replaced. I had read this forum and found the part on eBay and knew that isn't true. I took it to my own mechanic and he actually traced it not to the solenoid, but to a microswitch that controls the solenoid.

My question is this, does anyone know if the part 34970JD90A (listed on eBay here http://www.ebay.ca/itm/120737519422?ru= ... 3D1&_rdc=1) actually includes the solenoid AND the micro switch, or just the solenoid? I called the dealer and they found this part in the system, but said they couldn't find an individual micro switch. The ebay picture, although fuzzy, does look like it comes with 2 parts, which I am hoping is both the micro-switch and the solenoid.

solenoid only.. the microswitch is ordered on its own. Don't know part number but it should be listed in a previous post on this thread.

here's a picture of the part that the mechanic pointed to on the opposite side of the shifter from the solenoid when he diagnosed the failure on mine. He said that the ground was open on the switch. My dealer said that Nissan doesn't sell the switch separately, but maybe someone can find a replacement? I removed the retaining clip that holds it against the side of the shifter. The best I can make out the part number is AV634564 802080. The AV634564 appears to be the part number of a Panasonic switch, so I think I'm reading it right.

Dont that beat all.. Its a common switch from panasonic and my dealer ordered it just fine- But being under warrantee my paperwork didnt list a part number just a description. Reality it is a "park position switch" seen in TM-117 (download from Phillipa's post.)

I wish my dealer was as cooperative... i started to read the part number to the parts department and he stopped me at "AV" and said that's not the part number. So I told him "Park position switch" and he comes back with 34970JD90A... back to the solenoid. I explained that it's a different part, but he went back to same old "have to replace entire shifter".

So my mechanic actually bypassed the switch. Now the problem is gone, but the solenoid engages every time I press the brake pedal. So I have a feeling the solenoid is not designed for that much use and will probably go soon after considering it is a problem for so many others and now I am accelerating the wear. Man what a pain. I am tempted to just buy the whole assembly and be done with it. Maybe I can find one in a scrap yard.

Sorry for ranting but I bought this car in April used, and so far I have replaced the CVT and a bearing (both under warranty) also the gas cap (large emission leak issue) and front sway bar links (i know wear and tear). that was all in the first 2 months. I really want to love this car, and when it works I do, but I and getting sick of all the issues. Just hoping once this issue is fixed I don't have anything else major for a while.

Google NISSAN parts and a online dealer will get you the part before your solenoid does the deep six. Your local Nissan parts man doesnt know how to use the parts finder in his computer. You should have shown him the diagram from the TM

Hi all, very glad I found this forum. I have been experiencing the problem with the brake shift interlock solenoid as well. Just want to give a bit of background first.

I bought a 2008 Nissan Rogue SL from Milton Nissan in Milton, Ontario. The first year things were pretty good, no real concerns, then one year at the start of winter, I had the problem where the d/s door wouldn't open from the outside. The handle would stick out about half an inch, it would move, but wouldn't engage the mechanism to open the door, still worked from the inside though. Contacted the dealer and they told me that Nissan had put out a service bulletin about this, and that it was the same as a recall, just that they didn't have to contact everybody because not all vehicles were affected. The dealership fixed it for me under warranty without an issue and I was on my way.

The next year at the start of winter again (actually on the first snowfall) I had the same problem with the d/s door not opening, with the same symptoms as the first time. I called the dealer again and they told me to bring it in. When they were done looking at it, they told me that this was different from the last time and I would need to pay to have this repaired. I asked how it was different when all of the symptoms were completely identical, and the service guy couldn't explain how it was different, his only answer was "it just is different". I flat out told him that there was no way this was different and quite frankly I knew he was lying to me. I told them to put the car back together and I will deal with it myself. I contacted Nissan's head office, and while they agreed that this was described in a service bulletin, which is the same as a recall, they said that because the car was out of warranty, they couldn't help me and I would have to sort it out with the dealership. They couldn't explain to me how if something was considered to be equivalent to a recall, then why would a warranty even matter.

Fortunately I was able to open the d/s door by reaching from the d/s back door and hopping in that way, so for the next 4 or 5 months I drove it that way. Finally I took it to a mechanic and he fixed it for me, explaining that this problem is exactly what was described in the service bulletin.

I should also explain that since about 6 months after delivery, I started to have the problem with the shifter, and when I took it to the dealer for the maintenance, they were able to reproduce the problem, but they didn't fix it because they said it would probably go away on its own. In the last few months, the problem with the shifter has become increasingly frequent. I normally have to turn the car off and on a few times before the shifter will engage. One time my wife put the car in park when going through a drive through ATM, and it took her over 10 minutes to get it out of park again, with a large lineup of cars waiting behind her. I am going to see if I can get this part and fix the car myself, as I have 0 trust in Milton Nissan. Overall I would say that I am very disappointed in Nissan and the chances of me purchasing another one of their vehicles is very low now.
Thanks for letting me rant, this thread has been a great source of info.

Sorry to hear about your issues. I've had some of the same ones as you. D/s door wouldn't open up one winter (only happened once though)...then the shift interlock failing.

Pop the shift lock bypass cover and keep something in the car you can stick in that little slot so that you don't have to fiddle with the car for 10 minutes each time. See the previous page for pictures of what I'm talking about.

It really seems like you need to take it to another Nissan dealer. Might have to drive a while to get to another one, but I'm sure you've got a few around you that you can go to. Unfortunately for me, there's one Nissan dealer in the state. I'd honestly have to drive over 2000 miles to get to another dealer. So feel fortunate and take the opportunity to go to another dealer! lol.
The dealer service department can make or break your experience with a car company. Sometimes there's bad ones, but there's a lot of stand-up ones out there. And it doesn't matter that you didn't buy your Nissan from that dealer, they'll honor your warranty and all.

I'd take your Rogue to another dealer, tell them about the shift interlock issue and the fact that your car is out of warranty and see what they say. I believe some members here have gotten theirs fixed for free even being out of warranty. (I think they had to have special approval from Nissan corporate, but this is a widespread problem, and obtaining approval from Nissan to have the dealer repair it free of charge to you shouldn't be an issue.)

Thanks for the advice,

I should have mentioned that when I was dealing with Milton Nissan for the door issue, I did call a few other dealers in the area (I probably have about 10 within 75kms), and they were all really helpful, and they said that Milton Nissan should be fixing this free of charge, regardless if it was within warranty or not, but none of them would help me any further and said that Milton Nissan needed to take care of this. I will give them a call regarding the shift interlock and see what they say.

Thanks again

This shift interlock issue has changed to widespread and being reported as such. It is now a safety issue and could put Nissan in legal difficulty when someone is hurt or killed due to the inability to shift out of park.

The door issue is a design flaw in the cable that connect the handle to the lock. It seems the retaining ball/clip comes off altogether or pops from thee handle. It's a ez fix. My dealer just crimped a new retainer on in three minutes.

There is a technical bulletin out for this. It's a free repair that involves replacing the door handle seals with redesigned ones and applying grease to the mechanism to keep water out.

I've had mine fixed as per the bulletin ~2 yrs ago. Never had an issue since.

I don't feel it's a safety issue... the mechanism is designed to fail to a locked position. If the mechanism ALLOWED you to shift without having your foot on the brake, that would be a huge liability as it violates US & Canada safety standards.

Regardless, Nissan should get this fixed and release a bulletin about it. Just to keep their customers happy!

+1.

This morning , I pulled over to answer a phone call and the Brake Shift got stuck in P. Luckily I had a little wood stick that I was using a couple of days back to find source of creaking noise from dashboard and I used it to over ride Brake Shift Lock . Came to this website to research a solution and as I see now it is a wide spread issue.

To think of it , my break down related trips to dealership are increasing exponentially. Last month I had three visits to address starting trouble issues. Luckily my Nissan Rogue is under warranty now. But what after 36,000 miles....I love the car but at this rate it will turn out to be a white elephant sooner or latter.

Hey,

First time poster. Unfortunately it's for this same issue.

My daughter's 2008 Rogue is at the dealer, and they tell me $685.00 plus tax to fix this. It's got 78,000 miles, so is the power train warranty out? They tell me even if it was under 60k miles it wouldn't apply because this is not covered under the power train warranty. How do I convince them otherwise?

Thanks

Contact by phone and email NISSAN direct with this issue and let them know your a poster here.. Negative results kill new Nissan sales for a whole family plus everyone they know. It's a common problem.
It's also a safety issue as discussed previously.

Just found the warranty paperwork on this. There was a lifetime powertrain warranty given by the dealer when we bought it new. Does anyone know where I can find info on what is and isn't covered by a powertrain warranty?

if this was the security plus policy sold by dealer your golden. Nissan site had this-

Every Nissan is backed by a 36-month/36,000-mile limited vehicle coverage and a 5-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain coverage. 2003-2010 Vehicles equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) also have a 10-year /120,000 mile CVT limited warranty extension. (For complete information, see your Nissan dealer and read the actual limited warranty.) For extra protection, you can also add Security+Plus®, the only extended service agreement approved by Nissan.
