i just recently purchased my car, but i don't consider myself to have jumped on the bandwagon. all summer long, i had been saving my money to buy a mitsu lancer, but i needed help cosigning a loan to get it. unfortunately, my parents were reluctanct to do so. my dad's response was "why do you need a new car. when i was your age, i didn't have a new car."

so i started searching the used car market when one of my friends came up to me and told me of the guy rebuilding my car. i didn't even know what the heck a 240SX was when i started looking at my car. I post quite a bit on EvoM.net and had asked what some people thought about the car. The responses were "what engine, SR20 or KA24?" i had no clue what the heck they were talking about! so i started researching the car before i went to go talk to the guy with the car.

a few weeks later, i managed to get a loan (by myself with very little credit history) and had my own S13. I agree with J-Spec that you always see more of your car once you own it. I never saw any 240's on the road, but i see them fairly often now. Same thing happened when I had my old eclipse and my tempo.

Since joining the 240 bandwagon or the SR bandwagon was never my goal, I hope that I don't get lumped into that catagory being a brand new 240 owner.

You have an SR-powered vert. That's just pimp. Put an S13 front end on and some classy mesh rims and I'll be your personal ***-beating practitioner who takes care of ignorant naysayers.:D

Yeah I know what you are talking about. I have kids come up to me at school and ask if I have an Sr20 in my car and if I drift...I say, no, I have a ca18det, and uh, yeah, sometimes I guess I like to go out and go drifting. They just walk away cuz they dont even know what a ca is.

You guys should move to Clarksville, TN. I have seen only one or two S13s on different occasions--even AFTER I bought one. I guess they were never really popular around here (which doesn't bother me a bit :)[5.0+ mustangs, Civics and Cavaliers must represent 80% of the cars in my parking lot... I remember driving in my GF's cavalier and counting 6 other cavaliers within a 50-70ft radius. Erf.]

I bought my car after reading lots of good reviews on handling, looks and descent reliability (I was looking into a Ford Probe for awhile, but their engines seemed to be huge liabilities). If I had known that S13's were becoming the "next big thing" I probablly would have moved on...

...and why does everyone ask me if I'm going to "do an SR20" swap and "make my car fast"? I like talking with people--but people who base their ideas on something more solid than hype and what they "read in ____ magazine". (And the ones who talk even when it is apparent they don't have a clue what they are talking about--"Hey man, what some race gas? It's out back." Like it'll make my car faster. Wtf?)

Oh, well, my car looks like **** but I love her (usually :-) anyway. Now, just to fix.... *just add a long list here*

Car: What'cha think?

Post

I noticed em alot since i got mine in June of last year. I gotta admit before i really started researchin cars i looked at all the usual suspects(preludes, integra, celica, etc...) then i remembered seeing a 240sx in fast/furious(yes sad i know) and then i really started lookin into em and seen their potential, RWD, decent size lil motor, and liked the2 door aspect and the flip headlights(always kinda thought they were cool) and also that it wasnt popular at all, nice to be different. Then i found an S13 for cheap and bought and been learning about it ever since, never given a second thought about any of those other cars i looked at, im in love with this car, only car i love more and just cant own is an S15. I dont want people owning and fixing up a 240sx without haveing a passion for it, it just irritates me, I'm sure other people have these same feelings.

P.S. we gotta stop moppin the floor with civics and other crappy cars, cause when we beat em, just makes em want our cars.

the problem really lies in the crowd that takes ahold of a particular car. ricers are by far, the most hated group of car owners. and now they're starting to leak into other markets, falling away from the honda/acura tree. i've seen a lot of 94-98 mustangs being riced out in my area, and mitsubishi is starting to see a new wave of rice with the lancer.

but from the people that i've seen frequent nissan boards and the ones that own 240's, most seem to be performance oriented, which is ok by me. the problem will be once we start seeing threads pop up asking "where can i get altezzas?" or "is this wing big enough?"

on the other side of the fence, we have the mullet sporting detroit pig iron owners. these guys believe that their heavy cars will eat anything off the road. my father owns an 01 mustang GT and thinks my little 4 banger wouldn't be able to hold a candle to his car. granted, i remind him that while i might night be able to beat him, i'll definitely give him a run in the 1/4 i do weigh 700-800 pounds less than him.

with the popularity of our car rising, we just need to be patient, and hope/steer that the new wave will want to actually tune the car for performance more than for riced looks

A few days ago I had a "car guy" (he wants to put rims and a bodykit and a stillen SC on his Maxima :rolleyes) told me that my rocker arms were sticking... is "DOHC" on my valve cover really that hard to read?

Nismo_yo:I should say, "Yeah man, I'm doing a leet JDM B18C swap this winter. It'll be super tight!" (I wonder what they would say... wouldn't suprise me if it was to the effect of: "Cool man. I head that was killer fast!")

*correction* That should be a "JDM Type-GTR B18C"

i love all of the folks in here trying to combat the idea that they may have bought a car that has become popular in recent months.:D who so scared? of being judged? who cares?

i bought a 240 almost exactly a month ago. after riding in my friend's sr powered coupe i fell in love. i'm a fan of anything good handling, RWD, and with good power potential. my last car was an 88 Chrysler Conquest TSi that i had done a complete buildup on and was nearing completion, but only then did i find out the entire driveline under the car was thrased and needed to be replaced. instead of taking all of the time/money to replace all of it (more time than money in sourcing parts) i decided to take on a more modern car than the conquest with the same basic layout. enter the 240.;)

Suprafly, I don't think it's "being judged" so much as "being grouped with" other people.

It always happens though: as something becomes more popular the signal-to-noise ratio drops. (And some things have a low SNR to begin with...)

I think it is good that 240's re getting more attention. As nissan owners..we alsways complain about lack of support, but when we get it, then we complain about too many people having them rather it be 240's, Altimas or otherwise. There are plenty of better cars out there to be whining about a 240. I didnt think they were too special and sold mine. I got mine because I was looking for a 300zx and say 240sx in a pick list. I was like WTF is a 240sx?? Never heard of it until Feb 2003. They will continue to get exposure because of all the swaps you can do and all the drifters.

just think of it this way. everytime a ricer wrecks a 240, we get a new source for parts :D although it would be nice if a wrecked Z32 TT would show up in this area

intersting... i know that when i was looking for a 240 a few years ago, i went to junkyards in 3 different counties around here, 4 different cities, every used dealership i could find, and checked all the sales ads. i found 3 240 sx's, 2 werent even worth getting. so i grabbed the other one quick as i could. now i see at least 4 0r 240s a day.... figures..

I had to get another 240 shortly after :p

I dont care if a hundred guys here get a 240.....s13 or 14.

I usually just laugh at the guys here with them because they rice the crap out of them or drool over my sr.

I try to get some on the right track if they are truly interested in performance and some nice cosmetic upgrades.

Buy they seem more interested in neon lights or HUGE wheels or sounds.

Long live the TRUE 240 enthusiest!!!!

I saw Iketani's S13 in Initial D, and asked my friend, "Hey, what was that silver car?" I had to explain that it was the guy who changed the tires, and he was like "Oh, that's an S13." "what's an s13?" "My god, it's a Silvia." "...Silvia?" "NISSAN 240SX." "Okay, I want one."

So, I investigated the cars profusely, read reviews, looked all over for pictures, and decided that I really liked how they looked. Went and drove one and bought it for nothing. I love the crap out of the car, and don't feel like a "ricer" for buying it due to Initial D. Gotta learn about the car somewhere, and I'm awfully glad I watched this "cool new anime" a friend told me about =)

I started out as a Nissan fan in general. I originally wanted to buy a B13 SE-R, but as I learned more about driving, I decided I wanted RWD, and my love of the 240 was born.

This was right before it started to get extremely popular (magazine articles, drifting, etc.). I was in school and had no money, so all I could do was dream, and watch as all the 240s for sale were getting bought up and ruined (riced out).

Now that I finally have my 240, I don't care what people think. It's the car I've wanted for well over two years, and driving it makes me content enough to forget about all the bullsh!t that is now becoming associated with it.

hehe, well my dad gave me an ultimatum....it had to be cheap, reliable, kinda economical, and rwd. According to him fwd break a lot, is "too" much of a "new" technology and expensive to fix. Although this points may not be true, I'm glad it narrowed my search to like 20% of cars available.

popularity shmopularity. seriously, who cares? and when/how u find out about a car shouldn't matter much, either. hell, i know i wasn't born w/the knowledge of the 240, so i had to be introduced to it somehow. so whether it's seeing one on a lot, out in town, in a drift video, on "Initial D" (rema), or on the cover of "Super Street" all that matters is that u love the car (IMO). i consider myself a late-comer to the wonderful world of the S chassis, but i'll be damned if i let my passion for the car be discounted because i wasn't into them hardcore since 1995 like "Mr. 1337 sUpER Jay-DeE-eM car god". i'm sorry, but i just can't get w/the elitist mentality. for the people that are so concerned, why don't u start a new "undergroud car enthusiast movement" based on the Ford Festiva. i can guarantee that nobody has popularized/commericalized that market yet. and u can be just as exclusive as u want.
