I don't doubt your abilities or your commitment to the project, but there are MUCH more ecoonomical means to reach those power goals. Threads about high power Miata swaps usually read similar to 240 RB26 threads, follow me? I never took you as the type to spend unnecessary money just to be different Similarly, jumping into wheel to wheel racing is no small feat. I'm excited to see how it turns out, I kinda like the paint.

i know that u'll do this right but trust me when i say all the reading and research in the world wont truly give u a feel for the rotary, but im sure u already know that
d!ck wrote:3. 256 at the ground sounds high for a big bridge port motor, i think he meant to say at the flywheel. i spoke to him last week and he was excited to hear what i had planned and offered his help. still, i would be happy with the stockish 150-160 i could pull from a fresh rebuild.
even at the flywheel 265 sounds very high. one of the highest power NAs ive seen was 197 at the wheels. if u are set on making 200-250 whp i suggest a turbo 2. if only i had been on here more a few years back and u were planning this then. the engine i sold out of my fc was an NA s5 that had less than 1k miles on the rebuild when i bought it. what series engine are u going with? ive always liked the earlier miatas, especially in red and with hardtops but i woudl play with the 1.6 and focus on suspension, maybe itbs on the 1.6 woudl be fun though

i get your drift, and i know i sound like a hypocrite for jumping into a difficult swap that is not very cost-effective, but i guess im just an idiot who will have to learn by trying... i have a second 1.6 to rebuild and the start of a 1.8 swap that i can always fall back on if i lose steam.

so far, i found the easiest route to go is to machine the input shaft on the miata 5-speed to make the splines match, then using the mazsopr kit to bolt the 13b in and worry about engine management and routing the hoses and wires. that allows me to keep the miata drivetrain behind the motor intact including the PPF. with the amount of tq a 13b makes, i should be in no danger of needing to upgrade the rear end until i feel like i have to.

its funny because half the people who have done it say its straightforward and easy and the other half say its near impossible.

not inexpensive, but i figure that its worth a shot. i hope.

good luck, but the rotary isnt the most forgiving if ur trying to learn by trying. if u wanna be hard core about the rotary expect to blow 1 or 2, if ur not a huge rotary head and this is just a passing fancy, u might lose ur steam

im a hands-on learner. i need to find one to play with or make more friends amongst the local rotor heads.

As for the blue Miata, it will be stripped and sold to fund this project. My goal is between 200-250 rwhp from a 13b na. There is a rotary specialist shop nearby and I personally know a guy that has been messing with 13b and 20b swaps into all kinds of cars that I may enlist for help.
Can't wait to see that beast.

thats fine just make sure u have enough time and money to account fro blowing stuff up. with decent mods and work u can be in the ballpark of 180whp. what series engine u going with?

haha gave me a good laugh, but i think an ls1 in an rx7 gets on my nerves the most, i hate to see someone switch to a heavier engine thats easier to work on cuz they dont feel like figuring out the rotary

progress update:

Installed new all-copper two row radiator to replace the original oem plastic tank POS. It was leaking around the top and bottom, and a lot of fins were bent.

Made 3x trips to auto parts stores, Wal-Mart and Lowe's to pick up paint, paper and supplies.

Then with the help of an air compressor we "borrowed" from my gf's dad's employer, we began the tedious job of sanding down the car.

That's Nick doing what he does at work for me without pay. He's an awesome friend/housemate.

He "borrowed" that palm grinder and a crap ton of sanding disks from his work to help me get this done. What a champ.

After the "Bachelor Party Debacle '08" from last weekend, we were left with 50 or so Keystones in the fridge and in the mudroom. What are they good for besides beer ponging and beer bonging? Turns out: not much.

We made this bong from 4' of industrial-grade 1 1/4" vinyl tube and the largest funnel we could find with an appropriate sized outlet. We're calling it "The Old-Fashioned."

I couldn't drink being that I have been pretty sick the past few days, but Nick made it through about 14 beers that night to christen it.

We made it 1/3 of the way through the metal on the car, and i removed the bumpers and did those with an electric sander. The compressor broke down so we spent all day yesterday messing with it and didnt get anything done. Nick said he is going to try and finish today while im stuck here at work sick. Maybe more progress pics this week or next weekend.
