Hmmm, I think that this is for safety. If the car was on the highway, and you inadvertently open the door (for whatever silly reason, I agree!), and the seat retracts so that someone cannot reach the pedals or brake, it could make for some interesting problems!
I do agree that my concern here is pretty darn minor! As long as the car is in park, it should move back.
