I have a question for you guys. I just bought a 93 S13 coupe and am getting ready for a Sr20 swap. My future goal is 300whp. Right now Im looking for parts but want to start with a turbo back exhaust. Are there any recommended cat backs for the SR'd coupe? Im just trying to see what other people have and are liking. Any info would be great.

eh... anything 3" will give you pretty much the same power... its what you choose to use under the hood that makes the difference. My advice, gt2871r .64... I love that effin turbo.

first off, you have to realize that the offset on sentra wheels are completely opposite of offsets intended for 240sx's. I'm not exactly too sure what the offsets of the sentra wheels are, but chances are they're like a +40 or something.... its gonna look pretty sunk. anyways, tell me the exact specs of the wheels, and I'll tell you the tire size. wtf 205/60 are you talking about? you have the 205/60 on your sentra wheels? I thought sentras came with 17's?

I never heard of such a thing. Smoggers still want business, I doubt they'll turn anyone away for anything "visual". If it passes, it passes.

State referees on the other hand are a different story.
giodachamp wrote:ok thanks.. one more question, since you said you would fail the visual part... can you just hide the aftermarket header beneath the heat shield since it has that in the first place, or is it because it wouldn't fit?
aftermarket headers don't have the little screws to put the heat sheild onto like the oem ones do. If you can ghetto fab it on, I'm sure it'll fit without issues.

no i'm talking about the stock rims i have on the front of the 240sx now, they're 205/60/15. I got the Spec-V rims cause they were 10 bucks each and look nice....and i kno the offset is horrible but i can always sell the rims for more if it doesn't work out i'm just curious to how wide of a tire i can fit on the front without rubbing the tires.

the Spec V rims are 17x7 with a 47mm offset

honestly, i wouldn't go anything above a 205, maybe 215 at the most. You might however rub on the inside suspension (for sure if you have coilovers, springs, not too sure). If you want it to be flush with the fenders, get 40mm spacers , or at least get spacers so that they don't rub the suspension. I'd go with 205/45 all around

I just dont think this is worth starting a new thread:

what aftermarket catalytic converters will actually do something? Im from cali, so emissions are not really my concern, but I want the cleanest exhaust I can get with a 3"

I assume magnaflow and catco are the only converters that will actually do anything, but if there are any other companies (other than the HKS catalyzer, not about to spend 1200 bucks to say its legal) let me know.

thanks

left bottom under the cluster. It has a small light bulb picture on it.

imo, catalytic converters are only there for the legality purpose of controlling emissions, not really producing performance. If you want performace (~1hp gain, if that, depending if f/i or n/a), get a straight pipes or gut the cat. If you get caught by the cops with it, you're gonna get in trouble tho. I have a 3" catco on my exhaust, and I love it.

like most other japanese cars, they are kindof in the middle between american and German. American cars are cheap as hell to repair (due in general, to the massive ammounts of repair pieces they have to make for those Pieces of ****e), and German cars are usually very expensive. Why? Who the hell knows. Anyway, repair costs are pretty low for a 240. It makes a pretty good first car, just make sure you take it to a parkinglot and do donuts and stuff the first time it snows out, so you can get a feel for the dynamics of the car, and what it's limits are. No matter what anyone tells you, that WILL make you a safer driver in bad weather conditions.

I recently ran into a 1990 240sx with a turbo charged V8 350 small block that was for sale... im seriously considering purchasing the car... the car's interior is extremely bare... no seats, just about completly stripped... the owner mentioned that it could use a hood because the turbo wont fit with the stock hood and he said it could use new front and rear bumpers. ive never owned a nissan let alone a 240sx and wanted to find out some info that might help me point out some common issues... is there anything i should look out for??? he claimed its a savage drifter....

The most common issues with Nissans are crappy wiring and stupid electrical problems. That and rust... almost everywhere, but usually on the frame rails, shock towers, rocker panels, quarter panels, floor pans, etc.

Truth be told, from your description, it doesn't sound like there's a lot of Nissan left in that car. I'd recommend checking the work over well. There are several SBC and LS1 swapped S chassis out there, and if done right, they can be wicked.

If you want it for a daily driver, I'd suggest looking for something a bit closer to stock. If you want it for a drift racer for the track and the price is decent, go for it. You didn't mention if there was a dash or gauges, so I'll assume they're gone, too. A racing seat, some aftermarket gauges, a cracked dash, and a hole cut in the hood should put you in business for a track car.

ok thanks a lot for the info... i will definately look into all of that... im not too sure about the interior yet either... i need to go test drive it this week... he said it gets like 6 miles to the gallon and he would smog it cuz thats what he does... lol... he mentioned something about completing the transmission tunnel... is it really necessary to finish one or have one professionally installed... ive heard you can just make one yourself with a few fiberglass skills

haha, you are DEFINATELY going to want a transmission tunnel, and most likely you want it out of metal. Anything els sounds like it would affect structural rigidity.

Went and search for this question - and it brought me here - I honestly don't care to look through all the numerous pages to ATTEMPT to find this. So please someone give me a straight forward answer.

Alrighty - Differences in the S13 redtop and blacktop SR20DET engine? What are they? Which is preferably used? And can this engine be set in a S14 chassis (kouki model)

Question dos - Whats the difference in the S14 SR20DET and the S13 models. Along with differences from the S15 SR engine.

One final question - would I need a transmission for any of the above asked swaps? I have a 5 spd (from factory) transmission and really hoping I won't have to switch it out. Except for the S15 if I'm not mistaken (6 spd?)

s13 redtop is older/cheaper . blacktop is newer/marginally pricier than redtop. same 205hp. sometimes they have these little cooling fins on the front that dont reallie do anything and probably would not pass as a real diffrerence between the two. both can be used in s14 and are preferable due to the lack of VTC (nissan's version of VTEC.. aka valve timing) .

with that being said.. s14 engine is slightly different. it's a notchtop (straight in the front then it bends inward in the back). has a bigger turbo T28 vs t25. and has valve timing (VTC) on the intake cam . difference of 15hp between the S13 versions (220hp compared to 205) hence why the s13 sr20's are preferable just because it's easier and cheaper. s14 is a newer engine. just setup a bit differently. you can always disable the s14 vtc but why mess with it. s15 motor also has vtc but a hell of a lot better.. and a better T28 to boot. putting out 250hp with the 6spd. 6 spd transmission is pretty weak and would not recommend past 300+ HP. your stock KA transmission i would not recommend using for either motors. motorsets usually come with transmission anyway. why mix and match?

good luck. +1 for kouki

Wow.... 6 MPG.... Suddenly the 15 MPG I get with my truck doesn't seem so bad.

When you swap a SBC into the S13 chassis, you have to beat on the firewall and cut out the trans tunnel. To properly complete the swap, you need to weld in new metal around the new transmission and make a new trans tunnel. Fiberglass should not be used in this area, considering it's a structural element and depending on how much was cut out, can be subject to enough stress to crack the fiberglass forthwith.

I'm not that familiar with California's laws, but from what I can gather, they've declared it illegal to turbo/supercharge any vehicle that didn't come with it originally. Also, I believe the laws say that the engine has to be from the same or later model year as the chassis. If you're actually planning on having this thing on the road, you might want to check your state laws on the matter, since it will be pretty obvious to almost anyone that a Nissan did not come from the factory with a Chevrolet engine.

few things to add, later redtop models (1994) also came with cooling fins on the head, just like the s13 kouki (1995-98) did. s15's came with a 6-speed transmission, in which if you do decide to go with, you'll need to get a custom driveshaft. s14 and s13 sr's are a straight drop in without having any driveshaft modifications. Oh, and trannys are interchangeable as long as you swap the bell housing.

good luck. +1 for chuki lol

cali law states that you can use any usdm engine as long as it is from the same year or newer, regardless of make or model. However, it must be from the same vehicle class, i.e. you can't put a truck motor in a passenger vehicle... etc (kinda dumb, since the ka24de is also in the xterra and the frontier).

what kinda tach is it? anyways, download an fsm (cuz I sure as hell dont know what engine you have) and find out your ecu diagram. There should be like 3 wires coming from the tach. Tap the rev signal wire into the ecu pin for rev signal, the other 2 should be for ground and the other should be for ignition (for when the car is on).

but why do you want an aftermarket tach?

yea i was pretty sure i was never going to make it street legal but he claimed he owned a smog place that would pass it for him... kinda sounds shady if u ask me but im sure if i were pulled over by a california cop (where i live) and he hears the engine... he is gonna want to take a peak and will probably write me a fat ticket for all the shiz on it... i just found out its not an Ls1 though, its carbed so im not too sure if i want it now... its a really cheap deal which now that i kno its carbed makes it less suspicious but i really dont want to have to deal with an old chevy engine...

Well, here's something to take into consideration. Old SBC's are a dime a dozen. They are cheap to build for lots of power, and the biggest work on repowering a S13 with a SBC is the mounting, which looks like it's already done. See if it's a 4 bolt main 350. Also, a carb on a SBC is like a sandwich with your soup; they just go together. They aren't hard to tune, plus you don't have to fool with the wiring problems you get with Nissans.

From the sound of it, that thing is never going to be technically street legal. It does sound like it would make one hell of a track car, though. If the price is cheap enough, and you can afford to keep a dedicated track car, I say look into it some more. If it's making anywhere near the power it should be, it will dominate.
