Its all about tuning for the situation.
1.6 is AWESOME. Talk about speak of the devil. All the things I asked for are here, save for brake mods.
On the downside, my FF car became uncompetitive with the ability to limit power. Back to the drawing board for the 3rd time. This time Ive got it though.
In other news, I have been racing myself back to back, controller vs wheel, I have put quite a few laps down, and I found something quite interesting. The advantage, or lack there of, depends on the car, and the situation.
High HP RWD cars, the wheel, can be a big help. The same is true of wet courses.
That being said, for the majority of situations, cars, and tracks, the actual advantage is minimal.
I put around 100 laps in with different cars, about equal with each control setup. For me personally, I actually set fractionally lower times on some courses with the controller. Not kidding, or saying it just to use the wheel. I set a time on one course using the FF car I just ditched. I did it in 5 laps with the controller. After putting down 15 laps with the wheel, the closest I could get was a + .358 difference.
I also tried running with spt md tires on, and depending on track length, it added between 1 and 5 seconds to my average lap time. On Cape Ring inside for example, I spent 15 minutes milking every last second out of a car with spt mds on with the wheel. The best I could manage, was + 2 seconds. This makes me feel that the tire restrictions are again too harsh. I think the best way to negate any possible advantage would be the banning of any form of stability control. No TCS, no ABS. I think the "driving style" should be set to simulation or professional, or whatever the most difficult setting is. Its what I have it set to now. Having to properly modulate throttle and more importantly the brake, takes a tone of control, and effort. I still run ABS sometimes, because trail braking very difficult, and causing a lock up can easily send you into lawn mowing mode. This also puts much more emphasis on tuning brake bias, as well as suspension.
With all that said. This weekend, I will use a controller. I dont see it as any handicap to me, so fair is fair. We can revisit the situation later.
