Car: trying to decide on one...

Post

Okay I did the intake pipe and that seemed to fix the idle problem. The car idles now and can rev up fine. I also set the fuel pressure correctly and that helped, but...

I got to drive it for the first time today and it is running like crap. Here are some questions:

1) I had my ECU tuned for 19psi, should I go ahead and set my BC to 19psi even though it's running so bad?2) Where should my AFR be at idle and WOT?3) What should my vacuum reading be at idle? The feels like it wants to die every time I let off the gas and it is hard to keep it from dying when I come to a stop.

Also, it feels like it is bogging down a lot at low RPM's. It just doesn't feel very fast and I'm kinda scared to go into high RPM's right now.

The interior electronics also don't work when I start the car unless I rev it up then they come on and everything works perfectly.

Checked:- TPS set to .5v at idle- MAF power = 10v, MAF signal = 1.1v- Ignitor continuity checks out accross all pins- Tested wastegate, opened fine w/ around 15-20 psi

Okay guys please help me get this thing running good. Any help will be appreciated. I can already tell it's scary fast.

if your bov is venting atmospherically then that would explain why it wants to die when coming off boost. you can have the bov recirculated to fix this or alot of afc's have a seting to correct this.

also, what do you mean bogging? like does it take a long time to build boost or does it actualy hesitate to acceclarate?

I got it running a little better, the idle seems to be a little better and it doesn't die as easily. I probably need to check for boost leaks though.

- bov is recirculated- it feels like it doesn't want to accelerate, it kinda skips and surges and backfires a little bit

yea i'd check for leaks and then since it sounds like you have gone over the electrical aspect pretty well i'd make sure that the spark plugs are gapped accordingly then check the timing.....again.

are those voltages on the MAF ok?

Newest development: Alternator was only putting out 10v. Had a spare single cam one layin around so i drilled the threads out and got a 4 rib belt.

I won't be able to try it out until the weekend, but I think this will solve a few problems with how the car is running.

I don't think I got it man. I'll check again in the garage and see if my dad hid it somewhere.

Test fit one of the rear wheels. I really need to go get some tires.

Well it looks like you sent it in a standard envelope so only the envelope made it through the processing system. Oh well... thanks anyways.

I think I'm going to pull the engine over thanksgiving break and detail the engine bay and clean up some wiring. I think it should be running perfect when I try to start it with a good alternator.

well... I'm going to go ahead and pull the engine tonight because my front cover is leaking and my head gasket also appears to be leaking on the exhaust side.

I guess I'm going to pull the head and look at the hg and check the torque on the head studs.

This is gonna be fun

At least I get to paint my bay...

Nice build up. Are you going to heat wrap your exhuast manifold? What kind of BOV is that in one of the pictures?

Yeah I'll probably do the heat wrap when I pull the engine.

The BOV is made by Tial LINK HERE

This may seem strange but I just started building up a 180sx in Niceville and if your going to be in Destin this weekend I was wondering if I could take a look at your car to see if it can't help answer some of the questions I've been trying to figure out with my car.

Thanks, and if you need a hand with something I'm in town every weekend. I'm mainly curious about cosmetic things, everything else is backwards for my car since it is rhd.

Pulled the engine because I had an oil leak.

Accomplished:- Pulled engine and transmission- Stripped, primed, and painted engine bay and crossmember- removed upper oil pan, lower oil pan, valve cover, front cover- Degreased and pressure washed everything- Stripped all old gasket material- Cut battery tray out (rust)

New Discoveries:- Spec clutch disc destroyed, rivets sheered off (pics coming)- Torn VC gasket- Messed up head gasket- timing may off- part broken off of front cover- clutch slave bad, bought new one already

Left to do (that I know of):- get new front cover or get this one welded- buy new clutch and install it- order valve cover gasket and plug gaskets- re-apply gasket maker and re-install front cover and oil pans- Re-do wiring harness- get new heater hoses (wait till you see the pic)- Drop the engine back in- get tires mounted

Man the guy that sold me this car was so full of ****.

I'll post pics later today.

Damn that sucks. Happened to me when I bought that motorcycle you saw me riding. It had two damaged bearings which eventually spun and destroyed two rods, the crankshaft, and put little gold flakes in everything.

If you ever get to a point that requires some help you got my number, I'm in town every weekend.

Well, luckily I still have some money left. I appreciate the offer and I'll def let you know if I need some help. I've gotta see your 180 at some point too. Saw this thread and thought you might want to check it out if he has anything you need.

Okay, this is about to be a long as balls post....

ENGINE BAY - I sanded it all down and removed all the unneccessary crap. Used the angle grinder to get rid of some rust. Cut out the rust on the battery tray. I'll probably get a new plate welded in there that fits around the IC piping better. Still need to clear over it. No more blown turbo oil residue, yay.

Before:

After:

OIL LEAK - the reason I pulled the thing in the first place.

Broken Front Cover (I'm going to try to get this welded):

Head Gasket (reason for leak apparently):

CAS (or CPS) Plug - I need one of these if anyone know where to get one please let me know. Same on USDM SR20DE?

Blown up clutch - I'm not really sure to say on this one, making a whole thread about it actually.

I must say.... I dont know if anyone else has had the same experience as me but I am very unhappy with the quality of SPEC brand clutches and flywheels. I had one in my 240 before I put the SR in and I had NOTHING but problems with it. I would say spend the extra 50 or 100 bucks and go with a decent company like ACT or Exedy. Thumbsdown for SPEC and for that guy who put your parts in a freaking envelope.... NICE PACKAGING MORON!!! Good luck getting anyone else to buy anything off you on here.
