This thread deals specifically with the CVT rattle which only occurs while you are moving, not stationary at a stop light. From what you are describing, I doubt you have the CVT rattle.

Noises are difficult to diagnose. It could simply be a loose heat shield. Give the dealer an opportunity to fix it.

Paul, I now have 109,000km (65,000mi) on my original transmission. The rattle has been there since about 15,000km (9,000mi). Even with the CVT reprogram, it still occurs every now and then but nowhere near as frequent as it used to. Other than the noise, my CVT has been performing flawlessly.

My 2010 AWD SL Rogue had some noise at low speeds less than 60 km/h when decelerating and also low rpm accelerating. The noise when accelerating sounds like a low growl, similar if you put a manual in 5th gear instead of 3rd. The noise when decelerating is a whirling noise higher pich than the low growl. I think these are normal CVT sounds. (I Hope)
Is this the same rattle sound that you (Philipa_240sx) and many others experiance. Or is it different. I beleive its not the rattle im hearing but rather the normal sounds of a CVT. Cause it doenst sound like a rattle. Do I need to be concerned?
Also from what ive read do I need to go in for the CVT reprogram that the 08-09 models had the option of going in for. Or are all 2010 models updated?

From the way you describe it, it sounds like they are all normal CVT operation noises. I hear similar sounds from my Rogue... but honestly I don't pay attention too them much. The 'rattle' is very distinct from the noises you describe.

As for the reprogramming... only '08 and '09's were affected. The '10's should presumably have the updated programming already.

I took my 2008 AWD SL Rogue(29000 miles) in for the CVT rattling about 3 weeks ago. Service Manager sent me away with a "Yep it's shot, I'll order a new transmission and call you back" a week later, I took it in, they had for a week because they said they were missing a part. I got it back, but I still have a rattle, it's fainter now. I'm debating if I should take it back.
On the upside, my MPG went up from 19 to 22

Hey all its been awhile since I posted on the forum.. Well my 08 rogue is now 30 months old... I have had the problem with the rattleing transmision cvt belt and thought after the first transmission change it would have solved it.. but nope,, two months later it came back.. so we did another transmission change... then two months later the dealer did the computer reprogram.. and it helped for a short period..and the rattle came back but not only at deacceleration between 40 to 30 mph but now I hear it while sitting at a light...

Well now the vehicle is 30 months old just hitting 36, 000 miles, and on my way home the transmission seemed to be slipping the rpms would jump from 2000 to 2500 and back again.. once I pulled off the highway and stopped at a light it barely moved, and did get going again.. Once home and stopped it would not move at all.... the belt was whining, and slipping... very very weird... No caution lights, no matter what gear the trans was in... It was weird,, put the car in drive and press the gas and nothing,, put in in reverse nothing,,, I mean nothing no rpm change... Put it in nuetral and press the gas,, RPM change...

I waited for a tow truck and an hour later I put the vehicle in drive and it moved....

Its at the dealer.... NISSAN needs to take the vehicle....

Wow Roli that is a terrible story, I really feel for you.

Nissan definately needs to buy that vehicle back from you or come up with a definitive NEW solution to the problem that they are REALLY sure will solve the problem for good. Your problems have gone way beyond most "CVT rattle" issues, which to my knowledge have never left anyone stranded or led to an actual failure of the transmission.

It sounds like it would be in everyone's best interests if this vehicle was bought back and sent back to Japan for disassembly and used as a study subject. You paid for a new vehicle and it sounds to me that you've still not yet recieved a properly functioning new vehicle, not even close, and I can't imagine that Nissan can afford to keep putting in $3 to 5 thousand dollar CVT units in this car year after year (the 10-year CVT warranty could get expensive for them in this case!!) - not that I'm worried about Nissan's expenses but my point is I would think they should be motivated to get rid of this problem too.

All I can say is good luck, and please let us know when you hear back from your dealer....

That varies by Province/State, but it could applicable depending on where Roli lives. I know in Alberta where I live there are no such laws.

Just got my 2010 Rogue back from the dealer after having them replace the radiator that was leaking at 35k miles. While they had it they said they reprogrammed the transmission under recall NTB09-126. I thought this recall was for the 08 or 09 Rogue and the 2010 had already had the new programming. Any one else with a 2010-2012 have the trans reprogrammed?

On Monday, October 20th the transmission on my 2008 Nissan Rogue failed in four lanes of Eastbound traffic in Burlington, NC. Fortunately, my wife and I were able to get the car off the highway before we lost momentum.

This car had a known transmission issue. The company released a software update to correct a grinding noise in transmission in 2009. So, the car was driven with a grinding noise in the transmission from March 08 when the car was purchased to November 2009 when the repair was finally made. They extended the warranty to 120,000 miles on the transmission to allay fears. Yet, my transmission catastrophically failed with just over 133K miles. Coincidence? I requested reimbursement of the $1000.00 I paid for a new transmission and they said they had helped enough because they covered $3000.00 of the repair. When asked if money actually changed hands they said that was proprietary information. So, they stuck me for $1000.00 to replace a transmission with a known issue and probably didn't even send the dealership any money.

Personally, I thought my request was small considering I am young enough to purchase several more new cars in my lifetime and i thought they may like return business. Obviously, they do not. Nissan is now and will be forever more on my do not buy list.

mine started to whine even when cold, and now between 30-40 it does this very faint smooth rattle. its almost as if your dragged a piece of solid steel across concrete. its not like an exhaust rattle(bolt in a coffee can). its a much smoother metal grinding noise.

hopefully when this thing finally blows, nissan wont give me sh*t
