At what mileage on the odometer did you finally get 'good' MPG?

I'm struggling with the new Rogue here, I have 760mi on the car and today driving into work I set the cruise on 72mph, and reset the MPG calc, and I'm getting readings of 14-17mpg for about 10mi. When I drove at 65mph, resetting the calc, I was showing 19-22mpg for about 10mi, and when I did the reset again and drove at 60mph for 10mi I was showing 21-23mpg. But I have yet to get 26mpg on the highway, except my first drive home from the dealer, even though I drive on I-90 42mi each way to work every day! I tried to but just couldn't drive it at 55mph today because of time and sanity!

I figure that I'm losing about $15/week since if I got 26mpg I'd go 408mi per 15.7 gal tank, and to go 408mi at the 20mpg I'm averaging it would take me about 20gal to go the same distance. The difference of 5gal * $3/gal = $15/wk; that comes to $750/yr at 50 work weeks per year.

I'm running 87 octane, 40psi tires, and as you've seen I'm trying different speed combos trying to find the 'sweet spot'. The weather here in MN has been cold, in the -10 to +10 degrees, but the roads have been clear so I don't believe the AWD is being utilized when I'm cruising on the highway.

I really wanted to post my mileage but i can't as the mileage trip odometer that came with the premium package keeps locking up and stopping. For example it displays 22.8 23.9 etc then stops although you are driving for another 30 minutes. Re-set it and it works again. Frustrating. Has anyone else seen this or have a fix ?

i manually count mpg is about 19- 20 miles per gallon. and every time after i fill up the tank, the dte is around 330 - 350 miles , it never shows 400 something. what about yours?

I noticed a change/improvement in my mileage around 1500 miles. It's hard for me to get a comparable mpg reading here in the Chicago area, as the weather's been so variable, as have the road conditions (ie; road work delays), but it's definitely improved since my initial readings.

At the suggestions from this list, I've adjusted my driving pattern a bit to improve mileage, and it seems to me that there's a noticeable difference if I keep it just under 65. So even though I'm aching to return to tooling down the tollway at 75-80, I've been setting the cruise control to 64 and enjoying my XM and the improved mpg.

babbot, what mileage are you getting now (going 65) and what did you used to get (75)?

my average after 10317 miles is 20.9 mpg. My driving is 100% rural interstate going at 75 mph using cruise. I expected much better than this.

First tankful - unfortunately we were hit with dirty snow and extreme cold the day we picked up our new Rogue. Had entire front end protected with 3M Paint Protection Film (all of the grill and front fender, leading edge of hood, mirrors and leading door edges) before hitting the road. The first tank was consumed in a mix of highway (65mps or less) and city driving with some long warm-ups and idling. Mileage was 22.5 on this first pass...not bad considering conditions. Will be making an 1800 mile trip (one way) soon, plan to hold down the speed and see if I can beat the CAFE estimate.

My Rogue SL 2WD is averaging 20 - 22 mpg according to the meter. Got about 600 miles so far.

My first full tank got 18.2 mpg. Seems like it's getting better. Mostly city driving though, I'd say probably 80% city, 20% hwy.

I'm still having issues... 1300mi on the car, on the way to work I was getting 17.6-20.5mpg then on the way home I was between 24-30.2, first time getting this high.

But I don't know what to do to get consistancy!!! I drive at 68mph on cruise the whole way to work, and back, each way the same. And I expect tomorrow morning I'll go from 27 to 20 again!

4000+- miles on my Rogue last tank 25.5 mpg (manual calculation) 50% city 50% highway and loving it. Lightfoot around town and 70-80 mph on highway, no cruise control usage.

What do you mean "locks up"? The mpg calculation changes every 30 seconds ONLY if it calculates a change. Sometimes I drive for many miles before I see a change. As long as the mileage keeps updating, the computer is ok. The reason it seems to get stuck is because that seems to be the 'sweet spot' for the mileage you are getting. Try a less heavy foot or avoid quick acceleration and see if it makes a difference. Resetting will only tell you the mileage from the point you reset so it's best to only reset it when you fill the tank.

Mine was locked up too at the same mpg reading for two weeks. I finally reset it. I believe that there is indeed a problem with the calculations after a while.

There's a problem with the calculations from the start as roughly 90% of the time, the computer calculated MPG number is off by 1-2MPG. The only way to know for sure is to hand calculate.

Technically, this displays the calculated average, and probably takes that average since you last reset it. If you drive at 30 mpg for 30 days, and then drive at 29mpg for one day, your average is 29.96, which probably wouldnt' register an update.

If you want to get weekly MPG ratings, you need to reset it weekly.

New Rogue owner here. First time posting my MPG. I have filled up 3 times and it consistenly is reading better mpg. I drive back country/farm roads to work and lately a lot of pot holes have appeared due to the amount of rain we have been getting. I commute about 35-40 miles each way. I drive an average of about 60 mph on the roads and then when I hit the city around 45. I live in Northern California. So 70% around 60 mph/30% under 45 mph. It's been raining pretty much since I bought the car with lots of wind too, so maybe when summer gets here and it's not windy, I'll get a tad bit better on the mpg's.

I think I found the "sweet spot" for MPG on my Rogue, at least for the current winter temprature conditions here in MN. I am getting about 27-29mpg at 66mph on the highway going to work now.

But the car seems touchy, as I go up to 75mph, I average 15-16mpg, and at 70mph I tend to get 21-22mpg. I am suprised at the increase in MPG that results from dropping speed from 70mph to 66mph. Anyone else see this kind of variation?

I was really hoping to get 25mpg+ at 75mph, maybe that will come after the weather warms up??

I live in Southern California near Edwards AFB and I used to drive 70mph on the highways, but found out how much better my mileage is at 65mph. It's amazing how much better the mileage is and I don't mind if it takes me just a couple minutes longer to get where I'm going. I'm averaging about 25-26mpg now.

After about 800 miles (70 hwy, 30 city) averaging 26 mpg. Very happy with this figure considering the break in period is not over yet. Going between 60-70 mph on the hwy with some traffic congestion along the way...

SL 2WD - 300 mile trip 25.1 (I'll take that), over after 3,800+ miles running just past 21 (21.1). Still a Whole Lot Better than my 11 mpg Jeep Wrangler.

Enjoy your machines. I'm older than dirt and thrilled with the Rogue. Better than my XTerra and better than my Altima (thought the Altima get up and go quicker).

Don't forget that it might be winter, depending on where you live! My wife's 2006 Civic Hybrid has gone from a spring/summer average of 44-47 mpg all the way down to mid 30s both winters we've had it.

I'm replacing my faithful 2002 Pathfinder (a gas hog for sure) with a new Rogue this weekend, and really looking forward to it. I couldn't believe how much I liked the Rogue when I drove it the other day at the Nissan dealer in Saratoga.

Sorry i haven't been on for awhile. To answer your question, I live in iowa...the corn capitol of the world thus the ethanol capitol of the usa. The gas here is only 10% ethanol with 90% regular unleaded gas. Which causes a little higher octane rating and it also burns a little cleaner which leaves your engine cleaner. And it's also 10cents per gallon cheaper than 100% regular unleaded 87octane.As for the gas mileage....my maxima always got 2-3 mpg less in winter than summer so i'm not concerned. I love my rogue!

I have a simple spreadsheet and have been tracking my mileage. In the city my range is 22.9 to 25.2 mpg over five fill-ups. I drive easy - slow, smooth acceleration and braking. Mostly 45mph speed range.

But recently I made a trip where I pretty much went 80mph the whole time with the cruise control on. Highway mileage was 22.9 mpg. I thought it would do a little better but I was going 80 after all.

So I get better gas mileage in the city (I don't see myself driving any slower than 80 on the highway).

Driving habits, speed, and even weather have a huge impact on fuel economy.

Habits like high acceleration, lots of stop and go driving, excessively idling during warm up and constantly varying speed can increase fuel use.

Studies done by the US DOT suggest by increasing speed from 55 to 75 mph can result in as much as a 17% drop in fuel economy.

Driving through snow, idling for long periods, and slightly lower energy content of some winter gas has an effect.

I average 8.5 l/100km (27.6mpg) in my Altima. This is very close to the 8l/100km the Altima is rated for. I drive mainly rural roads around 95 km/h (about 55mph). By contrast I have done long distance highway driving at speeds in excess of 115km/h (70mph) and averaged closer to 10l/100km (23mpg). That's a huge drop... 4.6mpg or about 16%.

I have not done calculations for my wifes Mazda Protege, but with her lead footed driving she notices huge decreases in fuel economy. The high gas prices are making her drive much slower nowadays... and surprise she uses less gas.

4000 miles driven on a SL 2WD with average of 26.5~29 MPG depending on traffic.

90% highway driving, but the work commute is usually mixed in with stop and go.

Hi guys,

I bought a Rogue in Nov. and have kept a keen eye on the gas mileage since then. Here's the problem: The MPG is directly related to the speed, weather, A/C on or off, wind, hauling weight, 2WD vs. AWD, etc. I've gotten up to 31 mpg, and as low as 16 mpg. If you're interested in reading an extensive review about the mpg of the Rogue, as well as a number of other aspects of the car, click over to epinions and read the writeratwork review, and please leave feedback if possible.

I normally do my fuel economy calculations as follows:

1 - Always fill up at the same gas station and same pump. This way the auto-stop on the pump should consistently fill the tank to the same level.

2 - Reset odometer & drive

3 - Fill up when empty, record odometer reading and quantity of fuel used to fill the tank.

4 - Do the calculations.

l/100km => (litres of fuel used/odometer reading in km)*100mpg => l/100km / 235

Finally...

On the second tank of fuel I got approx 10l/100km or 23.5mpg.

I now have 1000km on the Rogue. Driving was 60% rural (90km/h), 20% hwy (120km/h), and 20% city (60km/h) with considerable 'lead footedness' during acceleration. I have been trying to avoid constant speeds doing lots of acceleration/deceleration during the break-in period. Reason? Moderate acceleration helps load the piston rings improving sealing, it runs the CVT through all of it's ratios, and I like the power All of this constant acceleration has taken a bit of a toll on fuel economy. This may be especially worse in the Rogue than a normal car as the CVT is quite responsive and will gear down quickly. High revs = more fuel used.

Other factors at play: Gasoline at the pumps (esp. here in Canada) is still blended for winter driving. I spend more time idling & warming up. We have been getting big dumpings of snow (at least for SW Ontario) and driving through it is burning more fuel.

As the engine breaks in, I expect friction to go down, the ECU will trim the fuel for optimium air/fuel ratio, and it will warm up which usually improves fuel economy. I expect it will take at least another 5000km (3000mi) before I see fuel economy in the 8-9l/100km (29-26mpg) range.

I have been reading these mileage logs, because this is going to be my primary reason for potentially buying a Rogue. I am kind of waiting on some things, but I think I will be buying one.

It would be nice if people would do actual mileage (manual calculations like the previous poster listed).

Fill it, reset the computer, next time fill it, divide the miles by the gallons.

After several times, you should have a reasonable calculation of mpg.

You can't rely on the trip computer for very good mpg. Obviously, it is going to swing wildly depending on your current conditions.
