Roll call - If you own an LS1-swapped 240, or are in the process of building one, please check in here... I've got a little project coming up that I think you'll like.

If you know of someone building one that doesn't post here regularly, please link them to this thread.

Thanks!

But, the week i realized i had a hernia and had to leave town i was actually starting to rip apart my car and getting it ready for the swap. Right now the car sits at home waiting for me to put it back together...snif snif

I'm building one. Haven't actually started on the LS1 swap yet because of a lack of funds (getting married soon and building a house/garage). But I'm doing all the body work right now to get that out of the way.

Az always seems to open a thread with such excitement only to leave us hanging and drooling for what he's going to post next. I have the funds... at least I think I do. I don't currently have a job, but have some money saved up. Thing is, I don't want to start on the project only to run out of money and be left with a half-assed project. Sounds like you have something interesting to tell us Az. It may be just enough to get me started. That and I'm tired of my bro and his friends trashing on 240's. I admit they drive much nicer cars (g35, e36 m3, is350 etc), but still...

no way...from what ive seen id say they average $3k to $3,500 for everything

id call 5k a good budget for the entire swap

thats rediculous if everything was working

rebuilding/buying a working T56 is around a $1,500 undertaking though, so that couldve been an issue with it

Finding a complete motorset is harder then you think. I had over 10 motorsets fall though when I was looking regionally. I wanted to inspect the motor before I purchased. I also had 2 wrecked cars lined up to buy and that were snatched out from under me even after I put a down payment down. Also watch out when buying a motor out of a wrecked F-body. If its hit infront and anything makes hard enough contact with the accessories it will crack the block. I passed over on local one at an insurance auction because there was a hairline crack from the A/C bracket. across the block.

Motorsets range alot price wise. High mileage 98-00 motor set will run 2-2.5k, low mileage will run 2.5-3.2k. High mileage 01-02 motor set will catch 3-3.5K, low mileage 3.5-4.5K. LS2 motorsets will catch 5-8K, sometimes more. Iron blocks will cost a fraction of the price. So if weight isn't an issue look for a cheaper iron block setup. Also T56 transmissions are expensive they usually run 1.2K for a high mileage to 2K for one in good shape.

I'm getting mix messages here. Some people are saying these engines are dirt cheap and others are saying they're crazy expensive. So which one is it?

They're about 2 grand for a full engine complete as far as prices go on LS1Tech.com I found mine on there for 1200 and would considered it a deal. Just depeneds on milage really. The people pay a lot more for 01-02 engines because it came with LS6 intake/throttle body, which gives about 10 more at the wheels stock.

Yeah I'm also checking in. I'm the friend TheOne was reffering to. I'm hoping to get it done by either begining or end of summer depending on funds and bumps in the road that I run into.

after buying the adapter kit for your mounts and some kind of standalone management i could see how you might come close to dropping RB motorset money, but from the few ive seen around here (i also have seen them going for $3,500 just so it doesnt seem like theyre giving them away) you MIGHT be able to get away with the swap for less than a decent SR swap with upgrades.

the way im looking at it is youre not necessarily getting it in and running for less than the cost of SR of KA-T or something, but for the price it costs to get one of those reliably up to stock LS1 power levels its actually more cost efficient to do the v8, its just a higher initial cost

You're correct. Although this thread kind of got high jacked and isn't much of a roll call now.

Im in the process of finding a motor. I have an offer for a 99 SS LS1 w/T-56 w/ 120K for 3K but it seems high to me. If anyone can find me a motor LS1 with T-56 all aluminum for less Id be very greatful.

If I could do the complete swap for $6k or less, I would do it in a heart beat. Seriously . Maybe I'll drive down to Texas this summer for a month or two and get it done. Sounds like there are good deals where you are at d!ck.

I swapped out my l98 out of my 87 iroc with a ls1 and t56, it cost me around 3.8k to do. I got the drivetrain for 1800, some of the swap parts I bought from thirdgen from someone who started a project but didn't finish. You can find deals on drivetrains, just depends how patient you are. The car flys now, it has a luk pro gold clutch(better than most people think)lightened flywheel, hanks headers, lid, 150 shot. It sheared the pinion gear in half on the 5 pass. Now has a built 1le 10 bolt w/ discs. It gets great mileage too, I drove it to Luisiana to gamble and I averaged about 27 mpg.

For the record, the LQ series motor is the same as the LS1 but with an iron block. It weighs 65 more lbs and is alot cheaper and more readily available. It's the motor that GM put in there trucks. Car Craft just made 550CHP with a carb/intake mani swap and a cam install.
