Nice man!

My bottom end has mahle 87mm pistons, Scat H-beam rods, ACL race bearings, ARP hardware, and a brand new SR20DE crank.

Very Nice build Please keep this thread going. My SR23DET is in need of a new turbo as my old stock T25 went up in smoke Like you I am retaining the power steering, so I am trying to find a turbo setup that will easily clear all the power steering stuff.

Thanks guys!

Update: The engine is finally in and running!!! I currently have just over 100 miles on it. Just in the middle of the break in process. I am going to order the tomei solid lifters here pretty quick, as well as a new intake manifold, tb, and AEM EMS. I'm set to get a full tune on the AEM EMS in April in Portland. I'll try to get some pics / vid up soon! School is keeping me very busy, so I don't have much time, lol.

For the ARP Mains, I drilled a hole, and welded a plate below the hole to clear them, lol.

For cams, I went with the tomei 260s

As for the GT3071R: while I like the turbo, I would be cautious with Garrett products (especially their new line), because they are no longer made in the USA. The manufacturing has been moved to Mexico and China I believe. When I get another turbo for another project, I am going to go with Borg Warner.

I 100% back the manifold, Full-Race makes a great product. I'd go with a borg warner turbo though honestly.

Well, I figured out that my hydraulic lifters were collapsed (cams had too much lift, and the ramp characteristics were too aggressive), thus the terrible valvetrain noise I was getting. So I ordered a set of Tomei Solid Lifters, Tomei shims (same as OE, just sized for the solid's), and a new set of OE rocker arms. Now, nothing in my motor is used except the valves and intake valve guides (all were in spec). Everything arrived to today:

Thanks! Even though I live in Southern OR, my GF goes to Sac State and I'm from Redding, so I go down to CA all the time, lol.

Update:

Turns out that the ends of my valves were ground off too much by the machine shop (apperently they are not the same specs as an SE-R), so now I have too much gap between the rocker arms and the cams (solid lifters do not take up the extra slack, lol). So I have two choices:

1. Pull the motor back out, remove the head, and install new valves. This is the most expensive and time consuming option. It's expensive because I will then have to replace the Apexi HG, 3.5 quarts of RP gear oil in the transmission, engine oil, and the cost of new valves.

2. Design and make custom rocker arm shims and guides. They are a very simple design, so that's not the problem. Only one feature in the design will be a pain to cut. I will most likely use a 4340 high carbon steel or something similar in stainless. My main worry is tolerancing.

Another update is that I just ordered a full set of R32 GTST M-Spec brake calipers (basically the same thing as 300ZX Twin Turbo brakes). Throwing these on the coupe, and the small Z brakes that are on it now go to the convertible. Gotta love hand-me-down car parts! Ha ha

Another Update: Picked up an extra set of drift wheels/tires for $100.

They are off a 2003 Mach 1 Mustang 17x8 +30mm offset with 245/45/17 Goodyear eagle tires on them. Little curbage on three and one has about a two to three inch section of lip missing, lol. Not very deep, but it kinda looks lame, ha ha. Oh well, they are just for drifting, and are only cosmetic.

Got this set of R32 GTS-T Brake Calipers in today! They are the same as the Z32 Twin Turbo brakes, but these particular ones came off an R32, lol. Swapping these on the coupe and the smaller Z32 non turbo brakes are going on the vert!

You don't have to replace the apex-i head gasket. You can reuse it. I know i had to pull my head agaion after some head work. I reused the apex-i gasket and it makes perfect compression and leakdown and runs like a beast. Go ahead and reuse it.

Got my intake manifold, new cold pipe, tial bov flange, and turbo coupler in today. They aren't going on until after the lifter issue is fixed, but I decided to get them in before I spent the money else where, lol. The manifold needs a little work to get all the casting imperfections taken care of, but it's no big deal, lol. Going to powdercoat the manifold after I get it all cleaned up.

Well hopefully I don't have to worry about it anyways, because I am going to try to get the shims made first. Thanks for the tip though!

Well here's an update (and it's a good one!):

Machined a test shim from M10 oil quenched drill rod. Tested the hardness and it was only 22 on the C scale (factory was 55 on the C scale). So today, I stuck it in the oven (school oven, gets very very very hot) for 6 hours, then water quenched it (cools in 10 seconds, lol). Tested the hardness and it came out to 60 on the C scale! So it's perfect! I started to machine the actual shims today. Got 8 of the 16 machined to size. Still need to grind the surfaces to get the correct finish on them, then throw them in the oven! Hoping to have them all done by the end of the week, and maybe get the car back on the road this weekend!

Yesterday I came home to a couple parts I ordered last week. Brand new OEM S13 Silvia head light brackets and "small letter" Silvia center grill.

Image

Put my used Silvia triple projector headlights next to them, lol.

Image

Now all I need is the corner lights and the hood, and I have all the parts I need!

Thanks! Other than the machine work on the block and head, and the assembly of the crank/rods/pistons, I have done everything myself.

Is it hard? I read your majoring in mechanical engineering so maybe that helps. I have no experience with building engine internals and right now, I'm planning to rebuild my engine. Would you suggest to do it myself and learn or have professionals do it? lol

If you are rebuilding a motor that you do not intend to boost and race all the time, I would give it a shot if you have someone who has experience to help you out as you go. If it's a motor that you want to race on, I'd have a professional do it. It's not necessarily hard, you just have to be very meticulous in your work, and make sure everything is spot on. You also need the correct tools to get the job done right. You will also need a factory service manual. Haynes/Chilton manuals are garbage.

I see. Its a gamble. Maybe I'll go for it. My auto tech teacher is a master tech and has been in the auto industry for over 30 years. He is well respected in the area so I could possibly ask him for help whenever I need it. And yes I do intend to boost all the time. lol
