orly? what qualifies as a muscle car then?
You coulda gone lp injection. To me a muscle car is a late 60's early 70's car that has a big block and takes corners like a boat does.

I have to agree on the pistons, seems to me like the engraving on them will create weak points over time. carbon build up? car is gonna haul though. nice build

Nice build

Carbs typically will alwas make better peak hp though, than a FI setup....

And this car will drive every bit as easy and nice as a fuel injection setup. It's not he's building wildly cammed beast here ya know?

And the Summitt engraving won't affect anything. On a high boost detonation prone turbo car, maybe (as in hot spots on the piston), but in a nice SBC it won't phase it.

WRONG,

Its all about restriction of air flow and the proper mixing of fuel. A properly tuned FI system and carb that flow the same amount of air will make about the same amount of power with the edge going to FI. Carbs have no power advantage, but their difficulty to tune and sensitivity to pressure and temperature are critical problems that have led to the obsolecence of carburators. A high pressure sprayer can also better atomize fuel than a carb, so FI is also better at mixing fuel and air than a carb is too.

A lot of what I read above is BS, for example that a carb will better atomize fuel or that it will have a greater temp drop. The joule-thompson effect is just a fancy way of saying that if you expand a gas by lowering its pressure you also lower its temperature. To do so in an induction system you need a restriction. A carb needs the restriction to meter fuel, but FI does not. That temp drop does nothing good for the motor since this low pressure air will adsorb more heat than air that experiences less of a pressure drop before it reaches the cylinder.

Do more research on how it all actually works before you comment.

Carbs will always make better PEAK power, not overall.

BUt what do i know?

My buddy REALLY wants to do a T56 swap into his '85 ASC McLaren but he just doesnt have the money now after dropping about ten large into the motor. By the way, I showed this thread to my friend with the Camaro and he approves.

^ glad to hear. yeah my brother was going to hold off on the t56, but he decided just to do it now instead of waiting for the t5 to fail.

I've got a few up my neck of the woods if you need one :Dhehe.

I know it may be close, but whats the cost of a smaller TKO setup for the Camaro versus the T56?

NO, Have you not seen the horsepower carb vs fi showoff? They ran itb's vs a tuned carb. The itb setup made something like 14hp more at the peak than the carb.Carbs are outdated technology and arguing that they make more horsepower is futile.

Carb don't make more power. They make the same power differently. Just because you get a surge when the 4bbls are open does not mean ti making more power. You're simply getting hit with it harder.

At full throttle, carbs and EFI make almost the same power. The problem is when not at full throttle. Another strength of EFI is in it's instant tuning. Changing altitude? Who cares! Running a little rich? *click click* fixed.

These days, unless your racing class prohibits EFI, you'd be pretty daft to built a car and not switch to EFI.

its not a race car, its a street car so it doesnt really matter. its not worth it to spend the money to convert it to fi. its a 73 motor so it was carb'ed.

^ yeah there isnt a ton of money dumped into it, but its always good to do something right once. i'll try to get more of an update later today. my brother was saying he put the new fender on. theres obviously a slight difference between the old paint and the new pieces. after a month or so, the whole car will be buffed (its obvious the whole car was resprayed at one point, a little orange peel every where) the whole car might get painted eventually, but its not a priority right now.

alright- sorry for the long absense, but i finally am updating this. the last that had happened, my brother was told the clutch and flywheel he had woudl work with the t56, so he bolted everything up and gave it a try. we found out the hard way they t5 clutcha nd flywheel is not comaptible with a t56 (at least not this particular model) so he shelled out the dough for a clutchmasters flywheel and zoom clutch. after installing everything we found that the force of breaknig the clutch for killed the slave cylinder too. luckily pepboys had one in stock. $40 and 20 minutes later the new slave cylinder was insalled and ready to go. the battery is charging right now and he's shooting to fire it up tomorrow and take it on its maiden voyage. if all goes well, it'll head straight to an exhaust shop and then off for tuning. while the battery was charging, my brother wired up the reverse lock out, hooked up the tail lights and fiddled with a few other wiring things. i dont think i've already mentioned it, but he went with a b&m short shifter and is now looking for a nice knob. the shifter surround has to go back in but then its good to go while he works on his next project for the car.......a gauge cluster. the tach and speed no longer read accurately so my brother's maknig his own cluster by replacing the factory gauges with autometer sportcomp 2 tach, speedo, clock and fuel gauge. he's also using 2 green lights for turnsignals and 1 blue 1 for high beams. he's also decided to use a red light as a shift indicator sicne theres no redline set on the autometer tach.

the car is very clos to running and i'll update again shortly with how the car's first drive is. until then heres a crappy cell phone pic of the car after washing months of dust off of it

I do love 3rd gens even if they are huge pieces of crap concerning build quality.

I want an LS swapped IROC-Z because the 350TPI sucked.

I'm not even got mention the 305
Very true , bul consdering the 350 is replacing a V6 that's still a big upgrade. Sounds like a fun project. I have a 350 crate motor in my GMC, with a 4 barrel Holly. The only recommendation I have is stay away from Flowmaster exhausts. They sound downright evil, but you get tired quickly from it..

Looks good, the only things I dont care for on the car are the stock wheels and the 4 inch cowl hood, other than that it gets my stamp of approval.

its all good. i like the cowl hood, and the wheels arent staying. but wheels are less of a priority then getting the car running
