Finished swapping in my S15 HLSD this weekend, and put over 100 miles on it already - WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!

Before, i was running a VLSD from an R32 GTS-T with 4.36 final drive ratio - great for N/A, but way too steep for a turbo car.

Switching to the HLSD, I'm actually QUICKER off the line now, due to less wheelspin. This thing LOCKS and GRABS, even accelerating hard out of a turn.

Also, rolling into the throttle in 5th gear on the freeway is AMAZING - I'm pretty certain this thing will hang with some pretty elite company from a 50mph punch.

Smooth, quet application of power - I love it...

So what kind of RPM's are you running at say 70 mph on the highway??

I've also got a R32 VLSD... great traction, and great for quick acceleration to 60... but I feel like I'm spinning a top on the highway.. 3300rpm or so at 70mph.. it's just too high. I don't like the idea of driving it any long distance at that pace.. too much gas, etc.. .

Good to hear that!!! I have same s15 HLSD in my garage, and I'm going to install it soon. I paid $379 shipped on eBay.

What did you do with ring gear bolts? Did you find 12mm with 13mm shank bolts or fabricate some?

Yup, got mine installed this weekend as well. Very happy with it. Didn't worry about different bolts or anything else. Works awesome!

installing in an R32 rear end eliminates the need for the special bolts, ive got a helical sitting in my basement, im waiting on the R32 diff then itll be getting installed

pretty much the sole reason for getting this diff is the cornering performance it gives you

Nismo makes ring gear bolts for the S15 HLSD to be able to run the Nismo (or CA or R32 GTs-T) 4.36 ring gear. Someone posted the Nismo part #s and apparently, Courtesy Nissan can get them.

I so badly want one of these. And don't grip about having the 4.36s....I have a CA transmission (duh) and 5th is a freaking joke. Even with my stock 4.1 diff, I am at ~3500 at highway speed. I can't wait for my 4 hour drive for Spring Break fun next week. I am gonna be deaf

Part number is #38102-RS500. Talked to several people at Courtesy Nissan and they had no idea about this bolt. Part number didn't show in their system. Here's the thread about the bolts. I ordered from different place, not from japanparts.com.

If you're just using the stock ring gear, you don't need the bolts.

would be nice to get one of these but the j30 deal i got was too good to pass up. maybe down the road if i feel like the j30 isn't holding up. BTW, i don't think anyone with your kind of power greg should have that high of a ratio lol. did u install it yourself or had a shop do it?

Damn, lots of questions!

A buddy and I assembled the unit into the pumpkin, and I swapped it out (along with the axles).

griego is right, if you run a 4.08 (stock ring gear), you have no need for different bolts.

Keep in mind, I removed my 4.36 diff + pumpkin completely, as well as my J30 axles, and replaced them with the HLSD (into a stock S13 open diff pumpkin) and returned to stock S13 axles.

I also kept my larger-capacity, finned diff cover that came with my R32 diff, and filled with Royal Purple.

Seth, I have no clue what RPM's I'm running on the freeway at a certain speed, as I didn't check. I've gotten so used to my speedo being OFF (because of the 4.36), I never even thought to look!!!

Speedometers are for ninnies anyway, I'd rather drive at a comfortable pace, not attracting any more attention than I already do, and only "cutting loose" when the environment allows.

I must get a HLSD! I'm getting ready to swap my RB in and I know that the welded diff from the previous owner is gonna crap out soon.

At that price I'll have one after I get some coils! [QUOTE=94_240sx]Good to hear that!!! I have same s15 HLSD in my garage, and I'm going to install it soon. I paid $379 shipped on eBay.QUOTE]

Wait a sec. Can someone explain this for me? What do you mean by 'stock ring gear'? You mean ring gear from your s13? In that case, I thought you need those special 12mm/13mm shank bolts. Then when do you need those special bolts???? I'm confused.

OK - Take a stock OPEN S13 diff. Remove the ring gear bolts and ring gear. Attach the ring gear on the HLSD and put it in the pumpkin. Don't buy bolts.

Special bolts are JUST for those N/A guys who want to run 4.36 or 4.63 ratio ring gear.

wow u went back to the stock axles........interesting. i guess it doesn't really matter tho as broken axles on our cars are far and few. i guess there is a reason to keep my open diff when i do the swap tho.
