Post

Good Afternoon fellow A/C Owners.

I have recently placed an order on the oh so rare 6MT 3.5 A/C. It is currently on a train and being transported to Vancouver Down Town Nissan where I will claim ownership of it. It is as the title states, White with Black interior with the spoiler.

My question now is..... What should I begin with on this lovely machine? I have audio equipment set aside that I will most likely intergrate into it. Interior lighting that I will change. I want to make this vehicle unique and my own.

Tint is already on the project but in terms of appearance and parts I dont know where I should start... This is more of a budget build then anything and I dont want to go TOO crazy... I would like a Cold air (Nismo? AEM? Injen?) and Exhaust (Custom? Stillen? Greddy?) Something moderate sounding but not deafening... Hopefully Lowered as well (Eibach? Tein?)... Where is a good place to start and estimated costs? Advice and input greatly appreciated. (eBay isnt helping too much) I also want to put in heads and tails however I am not familiar on the installs on those 2 parts... If someone could help with steps that would be great

May 11, 2012 : Picked up G2 Caliper Paint (in red) this stuff is sweet and easy to work with claims it can withstand heat up to 900 degrees. 2 stage paint.
Nismo Cold Air Intake (oh yeah.. i went there)

May 12, 2012
: Custom Made Fiberglass Eyelids ( http://www.ebay.ca/itm/290618416427?ssP ... 1439.l2649 ) and Carbon Fiber License Plate holders. Both installed, Eyelids paints black as it looks real freaking good that way without the colour matching. Rear diffuser painted black.

May 19, 2012 : Nismo Cold Air Intake installed, A total of 45 Minutes to self install (including loss of bolts and tools and fishing for them) REV MOAR!!!!, Carbon Fiber Plates trimmed to show registration decals (to avoid unnecessary tickets)
Image

May 21-24, 2012 : Scheduled time to go to the Paint shop to have spoiler installed, Stillen Front Lip - Semi Gloss Black, Eyelids - Semi Gloss Black, C-Mod Grille - Colour Matched + installations. (rear diffuser will be repainted to colour match the semi gloss so there's consistency)

May - 24, 2012 : Vehicle picked up, Gunna need a bit of waxing and polish but overall very happy with results. Photo Shoot with buddy tomorrow. Curious as to how to solve this CMod grille gap.

Turns out it needs the support bar to hold it all up.

June 5, 2012 : Final agreements made with Joe from Racingline. Pretty much EVERYTHING in his inventory for the Altima Coupe except lowering springs have been purchased + I get a free hoodie :). Meet up on June 6, 2012.

June 6, 2012
: Went to get my Greddy Exhaust courtesy of XenonSE-R, Eibach Lowering springs, and met with Joe locally to pick up Everything but his springs. Later that night, Grounding Kit, Short Throw, and Strut bar was installed.... Didn't feel much of a difference in the Grounding Kit (not even sure what "feeling" for) Short Throw shift was an interesting mod, I feel it and so far like it. Strut bar... Looks nice... But I'm on the fence about it.

Image

June 7, 2012 : Y-Pipe and Greddy Exhaust went in.... I masturbated to the sound. Enough said.

Image
Image

June 10, 2012 : Interior Foot well lights (blue), 3 K HID Fog light kit, and Some brighter Whiter halogen lights for my DRL/Hibeams going in!

Springs, Swaybar, Endlinks, and Traction kit will be installed later at a shop.... Lets see how my paycheck late June.

After much delay.. Im back on track. Cars going in the shop tomorrow (July 11, 2012) for End links, Sway bar, Traction Kit, and Eibach Lowering.

July 11, 2012 : Everything has been installed, RSB has been installed on tight setting, endlinkgs in place, traction kit and Eibachs in. Im impressed, Still at work but took the car around real quick and can feel the difference. Have little bit of negative camber nothing extravagent... Like it. Eibachs, look great... Wish i went lower in the front regardless but either way. Still good (maybe i should save for teins and just put the fronts in XD nah... save it for the baby... or coilovers) Thats the end of the road for this Spring/Summer mod fever. The rims and Audio come next year... or maybe during the winter when i decide the sub sitting in my room is collecting too much dust...

July 23, 2012 : Received Docs Illuminated Custom Kick Plates, now for a sunny day to install.

July 24, 2012 : Docs 1 of a kind Illuminated Kickplates INSTALLED!!!

Image

July 31, 2012
: Picked up my Razo 96 Shift Knob weighing 340G. Its at least 3 times heavier then what the stock weighs and the change is felt immediately. Love it. Now the shifter just needs to be about an inch shorter.

August 12, 2012 : I ended up removing the matte black tint on the tails. Having to dumb down the front driver/passenger windows tint shade... Turning the tails gloss black once time from work permits. Purchased T5 / 74 sized LED for Glove box holder and a multitude of pre wired Blue LED bulbs to put through out the ride (ac vents etc etc)

August 17, 2012
: ;'( Got hit while parked

For a budget build: Racingline Y Pipe over intake and exhaust every day of the week. Best bang for your buck.

Agreed. But if you want to get exhaust, I'd reccomend going the custom route.

Y Pipe: $275ish if memory serves.
Intake: Anywhere from $175 to $300+
Exhaust: Anywhere from $200ish for eBay up to $900+ for certain models.
Eibach Springs: $215ish

You have a lot of room to work with budget wise.

Y Pipe advertises 13HP. It will give you more of an Infiniti G or FX sound. Whatever exhaust you pair with it will enhance that. I personally have the K&N 69 Series intake, RL Y Pipe, and Borla axle back exhaust and I love it. Not too loud, no rasp, but still has that nice G growl and a little rumble from the Borla.

whats the difficulty for the CAI install?

Where do I get this Y Pipe? and a shop is needed for this install correct?

I know the Eibach's are going to run me 250+ after shipping... Hate being in Canada.. lol..
the intake looks like its around the same range as well... Exhaust looks to be in the 3-400 if i was to go with Stillen or something like that but ill go to a specialty shop and see what they can offer there.

You can install everything yourself. Y Pipe you get from racinglineperformance.com, they are a NICO vendor.

Gunna need a jack and some stands.... Oh boy.... even the exhaust?! O.o kinda uncomfortable doing that... maybe if i just buy all the exhaust componenets and get a shop to do it probably 50 bucks or so... CAI i can do... Im not comfortable crawling under a small car... My old Pathfinder was fine though.

Where abouts is this Y pipe located? I am still waiting for my new toy to get to the dealership and im quite anxious.... Pictures?

Welcome to Altima Coupe ownership! The guys have covered their bases here. For a complete list of modifications take a look at the sticky in this forum.

As already suggested, start with the basic bolts ons like exhaust and intake. A shop is going to charge more than $50 to install an exhaust for you. Grab a friend and give it a try yourself, I promise it will be rewarding!

I dont exactly have a flat level surface to work on my new vehicle : / Jacking it up will prove to be challenging.

anyone know why the Y-Pipe is for the 3.5 models only? and is it possible to modify it to fit the 2.5?

Y-pipe is for the 3.5, headers are for the 2.5. Same concept.

And OP, if you can find a place to do it, I'd definitely recommend doing the bolt on installs yourself. Saves you cash (you said you were on a budget build :bigthumb: ) and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

Depending on how things go.. I may try to buy everything myself or may have to get it from a shop... All of the decisions will come once the keys are in hand.... Worst case ill just rip on down the street to the cul de sac and do the job there with a friend XD

Edit :: Would the exhaust and Y-Pipe be a relatively easy install? Would i have to jack the entire car up to do this?

x2 I just realized Racingline is "local" to me and just a few cities over... BINGO :D

Install of the Y Pipe is literally 8 bolts, 3 at each down pipe and 2 at the back leading to the midpipe. You unscrew them from the OEM, take it off, mount the RL one with new gaskets they now supply, and rebolt. Its a 10 minute job as long as you dont have issues with any rusted/ceased bolts, which you wont since you are ordering a brand new car.

As far as location under the car, it starts about even with the rear side of the front wheel well (did I lose you there?) and goes back from there, so you definitely will need to jack and stand the car to get at it comfortably.

To simply answer the question of why it is for 3.5s only, the answer is that there is no Y pipe in a 2.5. The 3.5 Has exhaust channeled off 6 cylinders into 2 groups of 3 and then into the Y pipe, while the 2.5 has exhaust channeled off 4 cylinders into 1 group of 4.

If you really are uncomfortable doing it yourself, a shop shouldnt charge you more than $40-$50 for a maximum hour of labor to do it. But if you are OK with doing the intake, you can handle this for sure.

I am intriguid.... I will probably zip on down to them since its like a 2 hour drive.... Probably send them an email and have it all prepared priod to my vehicle's arrival and go to them right after LOL... is the short throw shifter thing they sell actually good?

EDIT :: Any idea if Racingline has a phone number? I tried to use their Contact Us feature and... yeah.. that was short lived.. I want to ask them some questions... As it looks I think i might buy their entire line of products for the Altima all at once. Then ill just need a CAI and Lowering springs and im set! (all for under 2k) I'll look into head lights tail lights, rims and kits later :p

My 2012 didn't have the bracket either... wondering if it was an older model?

On a related note, the install sheets for my Borla exhaust indicated a grounding strap but the OEM muffler didn't have that either...

Def Didn't have the bracket on mine either, but the entire install is pretty easy. And it will be way easier for you since it is new and nothing will be rusted. If you have an air compressor/tools to go with it it'll be no problem at all.

I have access to power tools, but none are needed needed. A descent metric socket/ratchet set is all you really need, along with a tube of copper RTV for the unions.

Just a 16mm socket and ratchet for the exhaust systems. The bolts on the collectors (where the y-pipe connects) were a bit stubborn, but I have a 24" breaker-bar that made quick work of them. If you don't have a long(er) ratchet, you may need to borrow a breaker, use a pipe to extend the ratchet or just man-up! Note I wussed out and went for the breaker... :argh

*EDIT: You will also want a long (12") extension. The union where the y-pipe mates to the mid-pipe (that runs the length of the car) is a bit of a pain to get to without one thanks to a cross-bracket that is near the union and becomes a nuisance. This is not a show-stopper but the extension made things easier.

Other challenge was getting the car up high enough. I used ramps and backed up them to replace the muffler. After I was done with the aft end, swapped around and drove up the ramps to gain clearance for the y-pipe. Entire job, start to finish was maybe 2 hours and 2 beers... :toast:

Took longer to install my intake (K&N Typhoon) but that was a snap also, again with basic tools. Only suggestion for the intake would be pick up a telescoping magnet if you don't have one. Dropped a couple of washers and bolts and having a parts magnet around saved me from throwing things and kicking the dog... :facepalm2

I hope you enjoy your new A\C here is my input....

My setup and install times.....

Tanabe - Quite 93db and Loud, all based on your throttle.
(Do not worry about the install, you don't even have to jack it up for the exhaust its just two bolts.)
Install time = 20 mins ( about 5 to remove old 10 to install)

Typhoon - K&N is quite amazing and sound great.
Install time = 30 mins (About 15 mins to Remove old stock system \ 10 mins to install (assuming you have put the parts together ahead of time)).

Springs - Tein S-Tech (2in drop) lowest "Quality" drop without coil overs. (Had these on my M35Sport as well)
Install time (Total) = 2.5 - 3 hours
1st Corner (Front Drivers side) = 60 mins
2nd Corner (Front Pass side) = 35 mins
3rd Corner (Rear Drivers side) = 15 mins
4th Corner (Rear Pass side) = 15 mins

Longest parts were removing the wheels and compressing the New Springs to reattach them to the struts.

This can be dangerous so be-careful and may want to consider buying a mechanically inclined buddy a beer (or twelve) to assist you.
You can rent\borrow a spring compressor from AutoZone for free (refundable deposit)

I am also waiting for a Y-Pipe so I can get my UpRev done
It should be really easy as the car is FWD and there is nothing in the way, I would estimate about 1hour with pwr tools install time.

Greddy Spectrum Elite Exhaust FTW for a Catback.

Tanabe FTW for an Axleback. (though Borla is pretty sick too)

I installed my y-pipe and catback using my ramps that I have for oil changes. A non-lowered Altima will have no problems getting onto any basic set of ramps you can get at a local auto parts store. For the y-pipe, I drove the front wheels onto the ramps. For the exhaust, I backed up the rear wheels onto them. Cake. Took me 30 mins to install each. Since your car will be newer than mine was when I did it, I don't anticipate having to break any bolts or anything.
