Started working on it today and it started snowing about 5 minutes into it...
So I only got the valve cover, waterpump, thermostat housing, and alternator off..
Here I got the valve cover off and the snow started...
Image
Decided to cover it back up after I got these parts off..
Image
I decided to work in the shed cleaning some stuff up for a while.
Heres the t-stat housing before...
Image
And after...
Image
Started cleaning the alternator/brackets and polishing intake bolts but the camera died... hopefully it'll be nice tomorow and I can get the head off.

Damn that engine bay is clean!-------^^

I didn't get much done today, pulled the upper timing cover and cams off and removed the sway bar. Just gotta pick up some parts and an allen socket for the head bolts and I'll pull that tomorrow.

For not driving a 240! lol

Today I got the head off..
Image
I wonder if this is a factory marking? It was behind the bracket that holds the scv and egr solonoids. It said 36 before I smudged it.
Image
I don't think the pistons are that dirty for a 160k mile engine and the bores are nice.
Image
Image
Image
Got the header out with the head out of the way..
I got the lower timing cover and oil pan off.
Image
Image
Image
Also worked on my "stealth test pipe." Got a 2.5" x about 18" piece of tubing from advance auto.
Image
^--- The left end is opened up to fit over another 2.5 pipe and it fits inside the cat perfectly. So I hammered the pipe in and cut the extra about four inches off the right side and about an inch of the wider section off the left side then hammered it around the right side small end to create a tighter seal. I'm probably gonna jb weld or some other ghetto fix around it to just make sure it doesn't move around or make rattling noises. It's tight now but when it gets hot with exhaust I don't want the tolerances changing and moving the pipe around.

Tomorrow will be pulling pistons if it doesn't rain... If it does I'll be cleaning parts in desperate need of cleaning.

Yea, those pistons are in really good shape. You're gonna want to weld that pipe though. Once that pipe heats and cools a few times, it's gonna relax and that thing will rattle and slide all over and make a racket.

Yea that's what I was thinking. I've got some of the high heat jb weld, I'm gonna do it with that temporarily. Think of it as a science experiment I'll figure out what kind of extremes that stuff can take.. I'd do it right but no access to a welder right now.

I'll bet an exhaust shop wouldn't charge you more than $20 to throw a few tack welds on that thing. Heck, they might do it for free! But if you're set on the JB Weld, let us know how it goes.

Drove my Vert yesterday for the first time in 3 weeks, dead battery. Been over 3 weeks for the Coupe, so it'll probably be dead too.

Got the RB20 on the stand, not as easy as I expected, the bolts I bought were too long. Found spacers to work. But damn is a I6 cylinder heavier on the stand the a 4 cylinder. Never I thought I'd use a breaker bar to turn it.

Put my lowering springs on the struts, they are pretty well shot... I may just get those Raceland coils before I put it on the road anyway, if the wallet lets me. Got my rod bearings today so I'll be starting the engine rebuild when I finish the bushings and get the new pistons swapped onto the conrods...
