Yes single cam. I know it's a pretty pointless thread but I need insight and experience, as I'm planning to drive from L.A to San Francisco soon. For now, my 240 is the only method of transportation I have and I'd feel more secure and confident if I hear other peoples experiences with long distance driving on the single cam.

Overall though, I just want to know if I'll make it there and return with no problems. The engine itself is stock and has around 150k miles and has been well maintained. Anything can happen and I'm taking that into account. I'm just wondering how reliable it is.

i drove from stockton all the way to pismo beach and back home in one day no/problem, except when i got home my single cam start to idle...my single cam got 230,XXX miles at the time + 4 people in the car. it was a 1200 miles drive....this other time i drove from stockton to fresno to fremont to santa cruz and drove back to fresno and back to stockton with 5 people in my 230,XXX single cam within two day. single cam are reliable, just take good care of it. O and with rattling timming chain and an exhaust leak. i drove almost 1000 miles in two days.i was so proud of my old car.

I drove a 89 two tone coupe for 3 and a half hours nonstop on the highway. It was terrible, 240's suck for long trips. Have fun

No lies. The car ran good, however it had no taillights or tag lights. It also had no title, insurance, registration or licence plate. I was not pulled over the whole time.

<- Lucky sob

Edit: 'Twas a base model with no cruise. Base models FTW

haha, L.A. to S.F.??? thats not so bad.

im planing to go to NJ from cali. yes single cam all the way 3 day woot woot!!! hahha.

what i noticed on the single cam is that once u are going above 55mph ur good. it seems like the engine just like to run, but hates stop and go. or atleast mine does. my single cam loves the highway, it breathes good and sounds good and actually feels good. but in traffic and in the middle of the hot day, it starts to shake, bad acceleration, over heating slowly begins, etc. I think u wont have a problem and if you do im located in the middle of ur travel so I can come out and help if anything. so good luck man!

Haha oh damn... Cali to New Jersey on a single cam. That's a mission.

And thanks a lot for offering. Well see what happens. I'm probably more afraid of my suspension or tires going wrong before the engine does.

Thanks guys I'm more confident now. Wooo another road trip soon.

San Jose to Fresno and back numerous times when I still had my sohc. With my dohc, GA to WA. This is all really irrelevant though. It just depends on the condition of your car and your engine.

I drove from Sac to Fresno and bought my '89 SOHC hatch with 326,XXX for $950 and drove it to Stockton, stopped for about an hour and then continued on to Sacramento. 3 hours and some change and it did fine.

And actually in 2 weeks I'm driving my SR from Sac to Illinois. 2,037 Miles...

San Antonio to Harlingen Texas, 4 hours about 278 miles. And back home. I did so every 3 to 4 weeks for a couple of years to visit my folks. Then there was the time the car stopped running because eventually I discovered the crankshaft timing gear cracked clean in half leaving me stranded about 100 miles into the trip back up to San Antonio. If you have not guessed, that suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked.

Ive made the Minneapolis MN to Marquette MI run multiple times in my S13. Its just shy of 400 miles, and Ive done it in sub zero temps, as well as humid summer nastiness. My stock E has just under 200,000 on the ticker, and she purs like a kitten even if I let her sit for a month.

Almost a year ago I moved from Seattle to central Texas. 90 S13 with 245,000mi. Intake and an unwraped header. 2200+mi trip. The only bad part was the unwraped header was generating some massive BTU's under the hood. I wasn't able to run below 2000 rpm's without detonation cause the air temps were crazy hot. Took us 5 days with no trouble. Gotta sight see ya know..... on a stock motor thats maintained propperly should be cake walk. I had CC so I set it at 70MPH, moved the seat back a few clicks, turned cati-corner in my seat with my feet crossed and extended to the left, right hand resting behind my head, and the left hand on the wheel. I have never been so comfortable in a vehicle ever, till then. Try that possition and you'll be able to drive for hours on end. I promiss you.....

I drove from Murrietta, CA to Scottsdale, AZ in 105 degree temps. That was so lame.

Not a ka, though.
