Take that 12k, use 4-5-6k of it to buy a decent ride and put the rest away for something more worthwhile.....

$12k is plenty for a reliable, fun car. Hell, you can still get yourself a WRX, probably a few years old with 50-60k on the clock if you hunt a bit. I see 98-99 2.5RS's with 82k on the odo for $7k, so 5 more would give you say a 2002 WRX.

If I had $12k to spend on a car, I'd be one happy camper. I really don't see where the problem is. Half of that will buy you a damn fine car. The other half would best be spend in a high return account. That could go towards a good chunk of college tuition, or towards a good car once you get out of school. You've got $12k banked, and you're upset? Seriously man, it's hard to show you sympathy when you act like this. I've tried, but you're making it hard for me.

I didn't get a car until my third year of college and it got beat up (parking lot dings galore!). Get a car you don't mind getting a little beat or you'll be having lots of bad days. College parking lots are unfriendly to cars.

Now there is no dad in the equation, and sonofabitch there is no new car either.... interesting.

btw so far my car is a ton of fun to drive, and is has cost less then 4k total.Now go buy a supercharged MKI MR2, get some good tires and do some basic matenence on it,then leave it alone and start autocrossing. Use the remaining 6k + to fix any problems that do occure
