Hey look i changed my name!
okay anyways, i have a little bit of an update. Mostly pictures, but thats alright because if you guys are anything like me you love pictures!
so i have been back at school for awhile now, and im a little late on this update so here it goes.
so i flew home for presidents day weekend, and i got to see the car again and finally do some things that i had really been wanting to do with it. keep in mind i only had 4 days at home, so i really didn't get to do that much.
what i did do however was finally get the hatch on the dyno.... now the motor has been dyno'd before, but thats when it was in the coupe. there are a few reasons why we wanted to do a few more pulls. first, we were not there the first time it was on the dyno, and thats alright but it was really something i wanted to see. second, and more important, we weren't happy with the tune, i knew how we built the motor, and it wasn't making what i paid for, and what i thought it should make. it ran great, but i felt it was too conservative of a tune. that being said, we obviously took it to a different shop/tuner this time.
here is the car in the morning warming up getting ready to be loaded into the trailer. i love this shot:
we took the car to Drift Office in Auburn WA, Bob the owner is a great guy and Bill the tuner is super knowledgeable, i definitely recommend them.
The main reason we wanted to do some baseline pulls was because our other tuner told us that we were only making like 330whp at like 15psi because our turbo was inefficient at any higher boost levels. now at first, i was cool with that, 330whp is definitely enough. but then i started to learn more about tuning and turbos and how s***s supposed to work, because i was really young and not so knowledgeable when we first started this crazy project, and a realized that what he told me made no sense because our car had no signs of being inefficient at high boost, and i drive the piss out of this thing. also, if you have been following this build at all, i hope its apparent that me and dad didn't really hold back on anything, that being said, we set out to build a mid 400hp turbo KA, and we werent going to be totally satisfied till we got our number. overkill? probably. but thats how we do things.
Enter Bob, Bill, and the Drift Office.
So, this was going to be a two step plan, first step was baseline pulls to see where we are REALLY at, then talk it over with Bill the tuner, and make an appointment to come back and fix whatever needed to be fixed, if anything.
we chatted with Bill before any pulls were made, kinda told him out situation with how we were uncertain and unhappy with out old tune. turns out he remembered me from my orange car, and was their the day i crashed haha. anyways, he checked some things out, and by what he was saying, he confirmed my suspicions that he thought our car had much more potential, and wanted to see how it would shakedown on the dyno.
so, i stepped back and was ready to see how things played out, when much to my surprise he told me to hop in and start it up! i must have looked confused and nervous because he was like, "you are the driver right?" and "its totally safe, dont be nervous" so i jumped in and started to let it warm up. i dunno if thats a normal thing or not, letting the customer drive his own car on the dyno, but it was a really fun experience and im glad i got to do it.
we did 7 real pulls that day, i say real because for the first like 4 or so my open wastegate dump was too loud and it was messing with the computer so they had to move it farther away from the car.
we ended up making 367whp and 336tq at 24.5psi without changing anything except boost pressure. this was good and bad, it was good because it proved my turbo truly wasn't inefficient at higher pressure levels and that the motor definitely had room for improvement. it was bad because the dyno graph seriously looked like a row of mountain peaks, instead of the fluid curve thats ideal. when we were looking over the graph afterwards, the tuner said that a graph like that would have never left his shop, and that our car had crazy potential. so, i guess that could be viewed as a good thing as well, because it was now obvious what we needed to fix. he also told us, that with a re-tune to fix the graph, he could potentially net us 20% more power at the same boost level. so i did the math, and 367*.20=73.4, so add that number back into 367 and you get 440.4. now i know nothing ever works out perfectly when tuning cars, but i feel confident that when we go back we can break that 400 mark.
we plan to go back to Drift Office for our re-tune while im home for spring break, which is coming right up. i believe we have an appointment on the 20th of march.
heres a vid of a 4th gear pull.
like always, comments welcome! -Ty
