Hey look i changed my name!

okay anyways, i have a little bit of an update. Mostly pictures, but thats alright because if you guys are anything like me you love pictures!

so i have been back at school for awhile now, and im a little late on this update so here it goes.

so i flew home for presidents day weekend, and i got to see the car again and finally do some things that i had really been wanting to do with it. keep in mind i only had 4 days at home, so i really didn't get to do that much.

what i did do however was finally get the hatch on the dyno.... now the motor has been dyno'd before, but thats when it was in the coupe. there are a few reasons why we wanted to do a few more pulls. first, we were not there the first time it was on the dyno, and thats alright but it was really something i wanted to see. second, and more important, we weren't happy with the tune, i knew how we built the motor, and it wasn't making what i paid for, and what i thought it should make. it ran great, but i felt it was too conservative of a tune. that being said, we obviously took it to a different shop/tuner this time.

here is the car in the morning warming up getting ready to be loaded into the trailer. i love this shot:

we took the car to Drift Office in Auburn WA, Bob the owner is a great guy and Bill the tuner is super knowledgeable, i definitely recommend them.

The main reason we wanted to do some baseline pulls was because our other tuner told us that we were only making like 330whp at like 15psi because our turbo was inefficient at any higher boost levels. now at first, i was cool with that, 330whp is definitely enough. but then i started to learn more about tuning and turbos and how s***s supposed to work, because i was really young and not so knowledgeable when we first started this crazy project, and a realized that what he told me made no sense because our car had no signs of being inefficient at high boost, and i drive the piss out of this thing. also, if you have been following this build at all, i hope its apparent that me and dad didn't really hold back on anything, that being said, we set out to build a mid 400hp turbo KA, and we werent going to be totally satisfied till we got our number. overkill? probably. but thats how we do things.

Enter Bob, Bill, and the Drift Office.

So, this was going to be a two step plan, first step was baseline pulls to see where we are REALLY at, then talk it over with Bill the tuner, and make an appointment to come back and fix whatever needed to be fixed, if anything.

we chatted with Bill before any pulls were made, kinda told him out situation with how we were uncertain and unhappy with out old tune. turns out he remembered me from my orange car, and was their the day i crashed haha. anyways, he checked some things out, and by what he was saying, he confirmed my suspicions that he thought our car had much more potential, and wanted to see how it would shakedown on the dyno.

so, i stepped back and was ready to see how things played out, when much to my surprise he told me to hop in and start it up! i must have looked confused and nervous because he was like, "you are the driver right?" and "its totally safe, dont be nervous" so i jumped in and started to let it warm up. i dunno if thats a normal thing or not, letting the customer drive his own car on the dyno, but it was a really fun experience and im glad i got to do it.

we did 7 real pulls that day, i say real because for the first like 4 or so my open wastegate dump was too loud and it was messing with the computer so they had to move it farther away from the car.

we ended up making 367whp and 336tq at 24.5psi without changing anything except boost pressure. this was good and bad, it was good because it proved my turbo truly wasn't inefficient at higher pressure levels and that the motor definitely had room for improvement. it was bad because the dyno graph seriously looked like a row of mountain peaks, instead of the fluid curve thats ideal. when we were looking over the graph afterwards, the tuner said that a graph like that would have never left his shop, and that our car had crazy potential. so, i guess that could be viewed as a good thing as well, because it was now obvious what we needed to fix. he also told us, that with a re-tune to fix the graph, he could potentially net us 20% more power at the same boost level. so i did the math, and 367*.20=73.4, so add that number back into 367 and you get 440.4. now i know nothing ever works out perfectly when tuning cars, but i feel confident that when we go back we can break that 400 mark.

we plan to go back to Drift Office for our re-tune while im home for spring break, which is coming right up. i believe we have an appointment on the 20th of march.

heres a vid of a 4th gear pull.

like always, comments welcome! -Ty

Any plans on fabbing up a fan shroud? I think thats the only reason your temps were climbing, that fans too far away. Either go electric or yeah lol

Nice, i had a stainless header that went gold upon startup too man. Spacing out the wheels with these new over fenders?

I'm diggin everything about this build. Makes me wanna build a car with my dad or build one with my son once I have one in a few years. But I really like that you're in WA. It'd be tight to see you at Golden Gardens in a couple weeks...Epic Build though!!! (I'm kinda drunk right now)

I miss those days with the dad hang on to em, me and my dad were close like that back in my Motocross days but after i hurt my self and went to cars we have drifted apart.

Can't wait to hear the dyno results. my SR20DET is sittin at 260ish

The dyno day at Drift Office went extremely well, i finally feel that the car is making respectable numbers for the amount of work that went into it, and i know for a fact that my tune is rock solid.

we showed up a drift office at about 1030 on saturday. Bob and Bill were waiting for us, we had the dyno all day so they pretty much said, "show up sometime in the morning, we'll be here"

so we got there, got the car on the dyno, and started to warm the motor up. Then bill started tweaking the AFR's a bit untill he thought it was safe to do a few full pulls. we were having computer issues at first because the car is so loud when the wastegate opens that it would mess up the computer and it would only sample up to about 4k rpms, a noise barrier made of a toyota supra hood eventually fixed the problem. i knew it was going to be a good day when i saw the car make 288ft-lbs of torque at 3700 by only adjusting afr's. truck motor FTW.

anyways, we spent a total of 5 hours at the Drift Office and eventually made more power, much more torque and were doing all this on about 4-5 psi less than the previous tune. pretty much what im getting at is, if your in WA, need a tune, if you dont go to Drift Office your wasting money.

we ended the day making 394whp and 370wtq at 19psi. we could have turned up the boost back to where it was at 24psi, but the motor is happier this way, and i know if i ever need it, that 450 number is just a turn of the boost controller away, though i doubt ill ever need it.

anyways, i have some graphs.

here is a before and after, blue is clearly before.

here is a 3rd vs. 4th, red is 3rd

and finally, this a the two best 4th gear runs.

you guys did great! that is a really clean curve congradulations.

and your lying to yourself if you think you wont need the 450 you know your going to crave it want it then need it very soon...lol

again great job, congrats

Man that previous graph is so fugly.

Great job on the new tune. Just shy of 400 wheel hp has to be really fun to drift with mang.
