I came home from the office this evening around 7pm. The weather was BEAUTIFUL and the top was of course down. The sun was setting and the air was cool. The Wallflowers were playing on XM and the world was just right. I had some packages to deliver, so I was heading to the post office near my place.

My light turned green and I proceeded forward. I glanced left for a moment and saw, suddenly, a giant KIA logo and grille coming right at me, just two or three feet from me face.

I yelled "I'm F****ED!" and thought not about my loved ones, but about how badly this was going to hurt if I survived, and how I might be better off dead if it got really bad.

Small SUV + small convertible = SMASH! In any other little car, I'd have had the door in my ribs, and probably some of my intestines hanging out for public display. This BMW, I swear to god, saved my life tonight.

The impact bar did its job VERY commendably, and the side airbag helped too. And since I had the top down, there was no glass to pick out of my skin. Yay for convertibles!

The rollover hoops came up, which was reassuring to know if I ever got upside down.

Little airbag protecting me from the impact.

Quite a few kind people pulled over to help me out. All of them called 911, and within one minute (seriously) I was greeted by two police cars, an ambulance, and two fire trucks. Looks like the FOP and Chesterfield FD are getting my donations.

I moved my legs and arms to check for broken bits and pain, and everything seemed okay, and three people helped me climb out.

Two people in a van offered me their business cards and contact info, offering to be witnesses and handed me their business cards, which I copied down and then handed to the police officer. The cop, who I've seen around, is also my neighbor who lives in the same apartment complex.

I sat there going, "AHHH! AHHH! AHHH!" because everything hurt and I was pissed about what had just happened. Then I saw steam coming out of the SUV/crossover/wagon thing, and decided I should get the hell out before it exploded. Fortunately, we discovered it was just coolant.

The lady who hit me first asked if her light was green. Everyone there yelled "No!" She then apologized profusely and asked if I was okay, and I asked her the same. If you have to ask what color a light was, you weren't paying attention lol.

Her little granddaughter was there as well and apparently hit the top of her head on something, so she put a piece of frozen roast beef on her head to relieve the pain (lady was taking meat to her son... lol).

At the moment, my neck is sore, my shoulder is sore, my arm is stinging and scratched up, and my heart is broken. I seriously loved that car. Its currently at the Plaza Motors collision center, and we'll see what happens with that.

Not bad, but now things are getting sore and my arm is very badly bruised. I expect it to be all purple tomorrow. I may go get checked out.

My roommate picked me up and offered to take me out, so I had some alcohol to relax my nerves a bit.

Sadly, as we were going down the street, the tow truck flew by and taunted me. I really, really miss my convertible. Really.

Enterprise or a service loaner from Plaza BMW. Plaza gives out 3-series sedans. Otherwise, I want the lady's insurance company to provide equivalent transportation -- no reason I should have to suffer for what wasn't my fault. A Cadillac for a couple weeks would be superb.

Sorry to hear about the accident and of course, I blame you and your terrible driving.

It has to be your fault since you are asian.

First: Glad your okay.

Second: If it isn't totaled be very very picky about who does the body work. For some reason places that can do domestics and Japanese cars fine can never seem to get everything right on a BMW. I've vowed to piss off every anyones insurance when they hit me by only allowing the car to be worked on by a BMW dealer or specialist. Quotes for body work now only come from 3 dealers or their recommended body shops. Also, if it's close to totaled at all argue to have it totaled out since a previously wrecked BMW seems to have very poor resale value.

That SUCKS! I'm sorry!

For a T-bone, though, the 3 looks pretty damn good. Glad to hear you're okay.

Hopefully you don't end up loosing out after everything's resolved.

And for the record, those Kia Rondos are OOOOOOGLY. I friggin' hate them. And what the crap kind of name is "Rondo?"

Sorry to hear about your ride, but I am glad to hear you're okay.

As for the other person's insurance, I wouldn't hold my breath. People who drive Kias aren't known for having high coverage limits (assuming the coverage is valid). Some tend to be flakey about getting the info they need to their insurance to provide their statement and such which could hold up your claim. File the claim concurrently through your insurance and hers. Don't wait on repairs for her insurance to make a decision. Any additional expenses incurred by doing so isn't a reasonably necessary expense. If the lady's insurance isn't ready to pay your claim or there are limits issues, just let your carrier handle it, pay your deductible and let your carrier try to get it back. If they fail, you can go after her in small claims for your deductible and any other out of pocket expenses.

And why were your parking lights still on?

When the car detects an impact event, it will dial BMW (if SOS/Concierge service is purchased, I didn't have it activated) and send police and a tow truck. It will also disable the ignition (in case of fire) and turn the emergency lights on by itself.

Basically, when the car is hurting, it will get itself towed and then tell the world its aching by flashing the hazards.

According to the documentation, the rollover hoops only come on if there's sufficient rotation into a roll or 3 Gs OF FORCE. Yikes.

Wow Jesda, sometimes you just keep impressing me. 3Gs isn't much, I feel that while skiing. Remember material goods are nothing without the good health. It is good nothing happened to you.

3 G its what you feel on a roller coaster for less than a second at most, in the hardest corners. Its not going to send all your blood to the other side of your body, but the problem is when that force is exerted in an impact.

It is said that there are three impacts that occur in an accident. The one between the cars. The one between the occupants and their cars. And lastly, the ones between the occupant's organs and the inside of their bodies. The latter two being most significant to any injuries...

The G-force sustained in a crash is part of what hurts/kills you.

Glad to hear that you are OK Jesda. It's good to know that you get what you pay for, at least when it comes to safety. I guess you'll have to update that signature pic of yours.

It is said that in any accident, there are at least three impacts that occur.

1. Between the two vehicles or a vehicle and another object.

2. Between the occupant and the vehicle.

3. Between the occupant's organs and the inside of his body.

2 and 3 are the most crucial in considering an injury claim, though 1 tends to have a proportional impact on 2 and 3.

Glad you're alive! How are your pants?

i've heard that in high speed crashes, your internal organs and be knocked out of place and you'll die from internal bleeding

Damn Jesda, I'm glad you're ok. I know you said you wanted a truck again, but you didn't have to kill the Bimmer to get one. You could have just traded it in you know.

If you decide you want a Cadillac, let me know and I'll hook you up.

Nooo Jesda! I'm so sorry to hear this happened. I know how it feels to be sitting in your car after it's just been mangled like that. It's awful! Glad to hear you're okay, side impacts can be terrible. Wanna join my My Car Saved My Life Club?

BTW, is the car at all salvageable? It almost looks like you just need a new door.

holy hell man! real Quick:

1.) Glad you are okay and the Beamer is almost okay (it aint totaled yet) ppl is right, good health is everything and things are just things. Glad to hear you didn't get finished by some slag in a kia, that would be embarrassing.

2.) Now you can make the Kia lady pay for your new bacon body kit ^^

3.) your next to last pic clearly shows the impact caused a catastrophic loss of fancy mustache, if you need a lawyer to sue for pain and suffering and the personal damages that ensue, i can totally hook you up. that stache was boss.
