I swear to god if he ever gets a tardy in his morning class. The havoc.

Fantastic build BTW, looks GREAT. Please forgive me if I over read things, but what kind of wheels, suspension and what not will you be going with (I'm about to go look at first post and read ALL the way through it this time. The picture icon next to the thread was just so tempting though )

Here's my update, not all good news.

Harness came back and I swapped the SR with the KA ECU. Got everything else hooked up. Had to make a few "adjustments". The fuel pump was running backwards, so I had to swap the wires.

Cam finished up the intake.

He made a little bracket to support the air filter/MAFS.

He installed the drive shaft, we are still waiting for the cat-back so we are done down here for now.

We decided to start it up.

Ran for a good ten minutes or so. No leaks. Idle seems a bit low. Had to keep on the throttle to keep it going. Made a few adjustments to keep it running. Water temp came up everything looking good. Let's go for a quick up and down the street.

Came back up driveway and heard a "tinkle""tinkle""tinkle""tinkle""tinkle" from the turbo! Metal on metal sound. NOT GOOD!

Aw crap!

Pulled the turbo and have a bunch of these little metallic balls rolling around in turbo. I think they are what is left of the bearings. If I push on the cold side the turbine locks up tight. Pushing back towards the cold side spins free.

Bummer...

^ Why t28? Just go t3/t4 and keep it on low boost. You'll be happy you switched.

Btw, nice update guys! You guys work fast. My dad and I are goin steady as well. Keep us updated and GL on finding/rebuilding a turbo, sounds like that one is down for the count.

aww that sucks but it could've been worse like a blown engine or something. T28's are easy to come by so no worries

I would say go T3-T4 also, But with stock injectors and management at 10 psi you will be running a 13.5AFR at 5500rpms. Go with a T25 or T28 unless you are prepared to drop money on Injectors, FPR, z32 MAF, AEM UEGO, Then you have to pick something to tune the car with, SAFC being the cheapest or Stand alone being the most expensive.

To op, Good build. Sorry to hear about the turbo giving out.

going t3t4 sounds like a pita you would have to change the manifold, dp and hotpipe just for the fitment. It wouldn't be a drop in deal.

i would go with a gt2871r, but then again it might not be a good idea to start him off with that much power

I don't want to get into the upgrade yet.

I can justify an upgraded turbo, but then do I have to do the fuel injectors, and the map the ECU, and then go to a top mount, and maybe... nope, not going to do it!

I think I should stay with a good reliable T28 and just get the car running at 9PSI. Let the kid get thru the winter on all season radials. He can save his pennies and save up for all the goodies. You gotta want something to appreciate it.

I sent an e-mail and talked to Karim at Total JDM. He said they normally do not warranty the turbo after the first 30 days. He said I should have checked the turbo for free play before the engine ran and reported it, if it were bad. I explained that it took 6 weeks to get the harness done and that I got the harness back on Friday and had the engine running on Sunday. He also said he did have a few turbos from engines but he was not sure about a T28, but said if he did have a T28 he will send it to me...FREE! He will call tomorrow.

All that being said, where would the best place to get a turbo be.

I will say this about my top mount T3-T4. Impressive, I ran my friend with his T25 at 14psi and it was no contest. You will lag a little more but it comes on so much stronger. Plus an external waste gate is just... OH so nice.

As for getting a cheap turbo, You could always try your luck at the junk yard, Get someones used turbo, Or run an ebay. A lot of people rag on ebay turbos, Mines held up for 2 years and still has ZERO shaft play.

If you want a new turbo, Check out some of nico's vendors. I know Phase2 sells them.

Disco Potato. but an s15 turbo will get 95% of the same results and you'll save a couple hundred bucks.

QFT...I am planning a GT2871R, but it's going to be a lot more than any GT28RS out there esp when there is so many used ones.

Like the clown in the first few posts saying go LSx, everyone has their budget.

I was looking at going with a GTO but have since considered keeping my car...I then was planning a LSx setup. It's not going to be much more than my SR20DET will be...but it's a ton more then the average person just looking to get a nice used SR and drop it in for $1500 + about $500-1000 in additional.

My dad started me out with a 1966 Mustang GT we both built together (I wanted a 67 GTO 4 speed)...I had to go C4 automatic, but it was an awesome first car.

I did end up wrecking it once that was all my fault. The accident that totalled it I was stopped at a redlight and broadsided by an old lady taking her even older mother to the doctor.

I'd say just get it running with the old stock s14 t-28 like gmac said. You won't respect an upgraded turbo if you don't experience the inefficiencies of the stock turbo IMO.

s14 turbo for now --> then s15 turbo later
