Although this is one clean hatch obviously if you dont see the sarcasm your an idiot.

Teddy i am going to try drifting at a drift practice session later this month at the local speedway and was wondering what method of drifting you would recommend for beginners? ebrake, pop clutch, or just floor it? Or is there no answer just personal preference.

+1. I was also wondering this. I have been practicing some and I can't get the e-brake to work for me when it's dry out. I can drift great when it's wet out, but when it's dry, getting the rear to kick out is definately a HUGE challenge. Any tips from a veteran?

If you're a beginner, the best thing you could do at your first event(s) is not worry about car set up, and to not think too hard. The main goal is getting your car to slide. Don't touch your suspension, don't do anything. Just bring the car and slide it. Have fun.

At my first event, I learned how to get the car sideways with the side brake, but I quickly learned how to clutch kick because I liked the increased speed.

Don't get ahead of yourself. Don't try to go into the intermediate group if you're a beginner. Learn at your pace.

As far as techniques go, everyone has their preferred technique. Ueo loves to feint, Tsuchiya enoys "dynamic" drifting, or front brake drifting, European drifters like using the handbrake. The best way is to try every method and see what you like. Don't worry about what others are doing. Worry about what YOU are doing.

But just FYI flooring it is not the greatest method.

Lol I'm no veteran, but if your side brake isn't locking up you can either tighten it from the handle or change your rear pads. Using a "spin-turn" knob also helps.

Usually, I initiate a drift with a clutch kick and only use the side brake to lengthen a slide or make a correction.

Another thing my instructor did on my first day... He had me do a few laps with him in the car and told me, "Just do what you think you need to do, I'll watch." And so I did 3 laps without instruction, and then he gave me advice on what to do change or improve for the next 3 laps.

This helped a lot. It helped me keep my mind clear of what I thought I had to do and let me focus on what I was actually doing. The best way is to learn on your own, learn to feel what the car is doing.

That's awesome advice, and what I try to do any time a new guy needs help. (in person any way)

But really all you need to start drifting is a LSD of any kind, welded diff, VLSD, clutch type diff.

And since you have a sohc, just get some super cheap/free 195/205 wide 15in tires, on any light rim at 40-60psi. I drifted my old car with no power mods on drop springs and struts and a clutch type lsd and narrow tires for almost 2 years and it was fine.

NA KA's are great drifting motors because if they have oil and coolant in them they will drift all day long reliably.

Teddy- GL with the skyline. I'm waiting until they are more then 25 years old. I'll be able to do one up properly then and have less fear of the gov ruining my fun. Good luck with the RB though! I had a 20 in my s13, and now I'm swapping to a 25, they are definitely addicting!

Sorry to thread jack bro, not trying to I'm just a very curious person and trying to learn everything I can from anyone I can learn it from, but what is dynamic drifting if I may ask? Also, I very much enjoyed reading your thread about your build, brought me much entertainment at my crappy job in phoenix before I moved back out here, I loved the wacky stories and indepthness of it all. Can't wait to see the new car come along and hear all the crazy stories that I'm sure is going to come with it lol

Haha no worries man. I'm down to answer any questions that get thrown at me.

"Dynamic drifting" is what Keichi Tsuchiya refers to in the DVD, Drift Bible. From what I understand, he uses the weight "transition" of his car at corner entries by using his foot brakes to slide his rear end out. He also refers to it as a highly advanced technique.

I'm glad you liked the story. I enjoyed writing it for you guys. The new build probably won't be as wacky of a story because I can't drive the car on US roads, but there will definitely be a neat build.

Wow that's some fancy footwork. Sounds really interesting, I've never finished the entirety of that dvd because I couldn't practice most of it at the time lol. Can't wait to finally get some track time and see what works for me tho

That's why I'm such a huge fan of the sport. Even went to school for mechanics in phoenix because wrenching or sliding around are the only things that truly make me happy for some reason haha! Maybe I'm just crazy....
