The obsession with "diet" soda is also contributing to the problem. I don't have a link for the articles, but I remember reading that the dissociation between sweetness and calorie intake wreaks havoc with the body's system that controls hunger. They fed mice artificial sweeteners & they actually gained weight!!!

Recent studies done by Asian men in lab coats show that people that are annoyed by my posts have vestigial penises. Totally legit study, government grants and everything! (I told Barry it was for global warming research).

More fuel for the Fire

Studies show 39 percent of the children who eat school-provided lunches are overweight, compared with 24 percent of those who bring lunches from home. One look at a typical school lunch menu, and it's not hard to see why: Meat loaf, hot dogs, pepperoni pizzas, and cheeseburgers are standard lunchroom fare.

I don't get how people can screw it up.

Smaller portions. Less processed foods. Loads of fruit and veggies. Lots of fiber. No added sodium. Drink lots of water. Eat fish, chicken and pork. Get off your fatass and go do something that gets your heart rate up.

There ya go. Simple.

brb, too much fiber.

My only recommendation for dieting is to get enough fiber. It's pretty much the most important thing you can do for your health aside from exercise.
I was 6' and 220 about a year ago when I made the change to a high fiber diet and 5 smaller meals a day with no change in my activity level or what I ate. Now I'm at 180 with a cast iron colon.

I used to eat this sandwich from Panera Bread, thinking I was being healthy instead of Taco Bell. Come to find out the majority of Panera Bread's menu at the time contained a full day's serving of sodium (or more) PER MEAL. Some days I was eating there twice. No wonder I felt like s***!!!

yup... basically, the only way to avoid it is to not eat at restaurants. there are some places that have naturally raised meats... but it's impossible for big chains to not deal with a processed meat provider.

you can get lucky though... for example, here in CO, chipotle uses a local natural meat raiser... but outside of CO, the supplier doesn't have the means to provide enough meat... the result? yes, chipotle actually tastes better here in CO... if you evr get the chance to eat chipotle in colorado springs, it's a whole different experience

whoa whoa whoa, i have to clear up your usage of 'processed meat' here.( :chuckle: ) the steak you get at outback is not 'processed' just because its not a grass fed beef product. it is still WAAYYYY better for you than a 'processed' meat which contains a buttload of salt. processed meats are most lunchmeats, hot dogs, cheap burgers, etc etc.

now, if you'd like to discuss the nutritional differences between grass fed and non, thats cool, but lets not confuse what is actually processed and whats not.

Today, my mom was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Trying to be supportive, I threw out all our junk food to show support in these tough times. She wasn't too happy, and says now is the time she needs her "Fudgie Buddies" the most. I am grounded for wasting our food money. FML
