i didnt vote since i am a girl, but to me, if a guy has a southern accent and it's very distingiushable (sp?), it's a turn off.

like these people in my class that gave presentations over the last two weeks, i find it hard not to start laughing when their accents came out!! but i know it's mean to laugh. :D

but yea whenever someone gives a presentation, it sounds like broken english and it's just doesnt give them to much credibility. but if only a few hints of the accent every now and then, it's fine.

as for international students, it's different coz English isnt their first language. so the accent thing only applies to Americans.

I can't really say anything.

I laugh at engrish.

though I find them amusing, in no way should a person be stereotyped because of their accent though.

for some reason this makes me think of Me, Myself and Irene.

damn the Mensa kids that spoke like Richard Pryor...comedy gold.

I broke the tie. I think I lived in NC too long. Before NC I lived in England for 6 years. Not to worry many northerners are moving to the RTP area.Kev...

See that is the thing. If you are down here, you yanks have an accent. You dont if you are up there. Like if I was up "yonder" I would have an accent. But down here, I talk normal.

And I have to comment after going back and reading some of the other post. A few of you have no clue about us folk from the south land. It is fairly amusing. Just because someone speaks with a draw, doesn't mean they are a redneck/white trash. And trust me, I know redneck white trash. WE HAVE A WHOLE BUNCH OF IT! (We dont kid our selves about that.)

But, there are redneck white trash every where in the country. I should know. I have lived in North Carolina, Georgia, Wyoming, and did a spell in Cali. We just talk a little different down here.

And we don't take offense from people thinking we are stupid because we talk a little country. It isn't anything new. We tend to let people belive that. Playing stupid plays to our bennifit. Trapps people into a false sense of security.

PS This thread is funny. Be advised, there are a few of us red necks lurking around NICO. Hahaha!

OMG....I just called a local movie place, and a girl with a souther accent answered. Wow, I was so turned on just when she said hello. :D It was a deeper accent and oh so hot. Wow, I need me a souther bell. Just had to share this with everyone. I hadn't heard a souther accent in so long and that just put a smile on my face.

My new girl has a slight one, it kicks in with certain words more than others.

She used to have a thick British accent, no one really knew why, but her family taught her out of it... too bad, those are kinda cool... but she can kick it in whenever, so I still reap the benefits :D.

I've actually developed an incredibly slight southern one with certain words, mostly cuss words, lol... it depends on who I'm with a lot too.

redneck and southern are two different things.

Southern accents of today lack the grace and often do however sound stupid.

But hey, it's not ****ney.

Depends on the situation, and whom the conversation is with. I usually talk like I talk, which is Southern. I switch to a touch of neck, when in certain situations and around certain people.

But if you are not from in the south, you probally dont know the difference in southern and redneck. And then there are different dialects of red neck.

Hey, at least we don't sound like were from Jersey or Boston. :D I can barely understand you people. But I still love you guys. My old supervisor is from Boston, so it took me awhile to decifer what he was saying some of the times. Great guy thou.

lol i don't understand how people from the east coast have 2 different accents. I guess its like irish, scottish, and british. But the whole west side of the united states talks normal.....

i am at work. It sucks.

There are so many dialecs here ont eh east coast it isn't funny. NC, SC, VA, and GA are all pretty much the same. You can tell the further south you go. Just look at the difference of Jersey and Brooklyn. New England states have their own. And then you got poor old Flordia down there. They have about 15 different dialecs. They sound more northern than southern.

And then theres me. Living out west messed me up for a year or two. But I got back talking normal now. :D

Larry the Cable Guy? So that's his name. I saw that joker on the Blue Collar TV commercial. That show looks corny as hell. "European on my boot!" Why do I not find this funny? Maybe its cuz Im black.
