Southern Accents

I met a girl with a southern accent from southern Ohio, wtf is up with that?? She was hot though, so I let it slide. The only accents I've encountered are southern and LI(so annoying).

Anybody that is still mindset on the south (the southeast states in general) as being so dirt poor and living in filth are nothing more than wet sponges that have soaked up all the bull**** that has been handed down to them by their judgemental ancestors. The South does not make people automatically poor or stupid. Stupid people are all around, not just down here. It is not southern accents that are ugly, its hearing uneducated people in general ramble in broken sentences....they're everywhere - New York, Georgia, California, and Tennessee. I have traveled all around and it never takes long to find an idiot, or should I say 'hear' an idiot. When I saw the title to this thread all I could think of was the opportunities the ignorant northerners would take in bashing the southerners; that and nothing more!! Who in the hell actually says purdy...come on now, really. You should be fair and post the thread: "Who hates northern accents?" Losers are all around....you just showed everyone that.

And if your referring to me (since I'm the one who started this thread), I think southern accents are attractive, so you should read the full thing before you run your yapper. If your not talking to me, who are you talking to?? And if your not talking to me, sorry, it's been a bad day.

I find some southern accents to be sexy. I think, generally I find a well educated woman to be sexy, so it doesn't matter what her accent is as long as she doesn't sound like she's dumb.

Umm....Mike(240kid) and I were having a debate about southern accents. I was saying they were sexy and he disagreed, so we thought we'd get opinions from fellow NICOnauts on the subject. I don't know how you can get offended by being asked for your opinions on the subject of southern accents.

How is asking for personal opinions on whether they think southern accents are hot or not putting a sterotype on southerners? I don't get it, most southerners do have accents, so not seeing a sterotype there, just truth.

It IS unfortunate that there's such a negative stereotype of the southern states. Actually, the public school system in the deepest south is FAR better at preparing students for advanced learning than some other, supposedly more "cultured" areas.

I was born and raised in Alabama and Mississippi, and at 13 moved to Cape Cod, Mass... I was so far ahead of my classmates in my freshman year of HS, I basically was given free run of the school... Left there and came to Phoenix, and breezed through HS with a straight 4.0 without ever lifting a finger to study...

Really cost me when I hit the UofA... No study habits....

CPQ is right. There are idiots everywhere, and stereotypes are made JUST for those idiots.

p.s. Did i mention a light Southern accent (if authentic) is hot? Of course, so is a Welsh accent (Cathy Zeta-Jones)....

I find it annoying when people cry about stereotypes. No matter what the stereotype is there are people who fit it and perpetuate it, and there are people who rise above stereotypes and change the pre-conceived notions of the people they come in contact with.

This applies to just about everything, and it's always going to be this way, for every one person who defies the stereotype, there is another person who fits it. Go figure.

Besides, most people in this thread agreed upon the fact that while southern accents may misrepresent a person's intelligence at first impression, but their true character will come through regardless.

guys,rousie and i never meant for this to become so negative, we were having a friendly debate over aim. we put up the poll as a fun thing for everybody to laugh and joke about.when i said the word "purdy" i didnt mean all people talk like that down here as they certainly do not.

I have heard a lot of people say "Purdy" One of my friends has a horridly heavy southern accent. I kinda have one but really don't have an accent at all. As far as I know.

On a side note, people will always make fun of other races/ other parts of the country/ whatever. Just deal with it. At school, comedy shows, and many other places black people are made fun of all the time by all types of people. As wrong as some of the jokes may be, they are funny as hell cuz they are true a majority of the time. Hell, no offense, but I and many others(white and black) make fun of how white people act and do certain things. So what. As long as I dont cross the line I dont see the problem. Same thing goes with everything else just as long as it's all kept within good humor. As far as this thread goes, I dont see the line being crossed at all. Thats my $.02 anyway.

Dude, if your talking to me...you didn't see this family. I'm FROM the south, born and raised. I know white trailer trash when I see it and this was it! Yes, they had STRONG southern accents too and it was apalling (you could barely understand them), it was in frieking Plano of all places, probably the richest suburb of Dallas.
