In windows all the features of pro/ultimate are there when you buy home, but they are locked on the OS until you enter the license key for the higher version. Much the same way, an HTC Incredible or Moto Droid has this on it, in the code, all along, just "locked." Signing up for the $30 unlocks the service, with no additional installs needed.
But you have to pay a monthly service fee to use a feature that Google intended to be included for free!

Nico not having tapatalk is a serious loss of points with a lot of the community.
maybe check out some of the other forums that are having great success with the app.

...and the answer is still no. Somebody already created another topic about this a couple of months ago too and we've already explained numerous times why it's not going to happen.

I can browse, post, use admin tools, and moderate just fine from my phone without Tapatalk.

yes, I can browse from my phone too. I am posting this from my phone!

what I am thinking about is all the users that do have to watch our bandwidth usage.

I think you're looking at this from the wrong side. this would be for the users, not just the administration.

oh, about the bump. the other person should have searched!

You mean for the people that use their rooted phones as their primary internet device, when that's not what it's intended to do? It's your own business if you rely solely on your phone for an internet connection, but don't expect us to make a major change to the site just to accommodate that. I'm not trying to be a d!ck here, but there's free Wifi everywhere if you're on limited bandwidth.

I'm not looking at this from the wrong side either, we spend hours of our free time to keep this site free for everyone else and we constantly look at ways to make the forums better. The fact of the matter is that this site is HUGE and it's not as easy as just installing Tapatalk and we're good to go. It slows down our server, which Greg pays a ton of money for to keep things working well, and it's also not secure.

No issue with the bump either, i'm just growing tired of this same thing getting re-visited every couple of months, after we've already explained numerous times as to why we will not implement it. If it ever becomes a viable option for us, or we find a similar option that will work for us, we will consider it. For now though, Tapatalk is not a viable option for NICOclub, end of story.

Guys, trust me on this: if there's something out there that's SECURE, and will function with a forum of this size, I'd certainly consider it.

But the fact remains that it's not 100% secure, it doesn't always play nice with certain plugins, and we're a lot larger (with more traffic) than most of the other sites using it.

Not that this is any reason for me to be against its adoption, but I just don't see the appeal of Tapatalk. I've tried to use it for a number of forums and always end up frustrated with the layout. Big text and condensed content is not appealing. It's the geriatric big-button phone of the browser world. I feel the same way about web pages with a "mobile view" (I'll tell you, not having a big, well-located "view desktop version" button on your mobile formatted page is the best way to get me never to come back). Any phone with a "real" web browser will have a screen with enough pixels that you don't need 97 point font to know where you're going. And then there's zoom...

I just don't get it. :gotme

Is security really a valid argument considering the exploits that are available?

I'm curious if you guys have used any Tapatalk software. It sounds like you're thinking that it's a replacement site. It's not. It just removes all the fluff, advertisements, emoticons, pictures become download links, etc.

When you say traffic are you referring to total number of users accessing the site at a given time?

For what we are talking about a more important metric would be total amount of information downloaded per user per visit. Tapatalk is designed to offer that.

I'm not even going to quote A33 as he started off with some conjecture about illegal tethering.

Fair enough, we'll leave "illegal tethering" out of this. For the record though, I don't have a problem with people tethering, no matter how they do it. I tether myself, so obviously I have no issue with it. The issue I have is that you're complaining about our site using up your cell phone data and rather than going somewhere with Wifi, you seem to expect us to tailor our site to accommodate your data plan.

I've used Tapatalk many times and it's not that great, i'm sure there's people that like it, but I see no true benefit to using it. It's a cheap looking app that allows you to be able to view posts in a more simple form, which is all fine and good, but I have no issues with the way I have to do it right now.

The fact remains that we will implement something more mobile device friendly, if and when it becomes a viable option for the site. As of right now it is not, there's nothing else to explain about it, we've done the research and it's not something we're going to do right now.

It is when it's your business on the line.

That's not a topic that's even up for discussion.

As A33 said, when the developers at Tapatalk (who I've been in contact with on a webmaster board I frequent) can guarantee me that my concerns have been addressed, then we'll give it stronger consideration. It's as simple as that.

I'm a relative 'tard when it comes to all things mobile-related, and I still have no problems navigating and operating in the site via my mobile device (and remember, I do a lot more than just read and post).

To ease PMQ's pocket book strains I declare NICO goes back to green screen. We might even be able to save him more money if we chisel every thread out of stone and transmit it via un-encrypted smoke signals.

I'm going to fire up Procomm and dial into NICO, maybe play a Fast and Furious door game or download PCX images of Datsuns at 800 bytes per second.

I've got an old USR 14.4 stored away someplace (it's in a box with a Syquest drive and a rats nest of cables & power supplies) in case you need it. :)

Yep, bandwidth is a joke.

I'm just waiting for all the threads to pop up across the internet when people's internet connected devices use all their bandwidth from background services alone.

Then, and only then, will considerations be made of possible changes.

We are reactive, not proactive.

I think I said this before...

If you were half as smart as you think you are, someone would be paying you for your knowledge.

"We" do our research. "You" are simply too cheap to buy a data plan on your phone. :)

That's a great way to think about your members Greg. I have a 5GB plan with Tmobile.

ATT, Verizon, and T-mobile all have tiered data plans. No more unlimited.

Maybe what I'm saying hasn't happened yet. It will happen.

I am interested in the security issues that you are seeing.

I will reiterate, I am looking at this from a user's perspective. The Admin tools are NOT needed in tapatalk. Stats show that Nico has around 22 Mods. That's a very small number compared to the 170k members. Tapatalk is simply a program to eliminate forum clutter for easier and faster viewing on a mobile device.

It would be interesting to see what members actually thought of having a program like this. If you notice, only like 10 people ever posted in this thread :frown:

*edit*, I'm looking over the vulnerabilities with tapatalk. They seemed to have pretty much been resolved on the forum side. The only issues I'm seeing are on the client side with potential password decryption. Oh well, if someone gets your phone you have other problems...

T-mobile does NOT have tiered plans. I am using their 4G unlimited plan. It does have limitations, but is not tiered. 5GB cap on 4G, after that it's throttled to 3G. Even streaming Netflix and using the device as a wireless hotspot, I've never hit that 5GB cap.

Incorrect. They haved tiered plans. 200MB, 2GB, 5GB, 10GB.

All of them are "up to 4G speeds" until the cap. You might want to check again, they don't throttle to 3G. They throttle to GPRS. That's 60kbps. For reference, dial up is 53.3kbps.

Some T-mobile agents claim that it's 3g speeds. They are misinformed. I've been throttled for two months before. Speed tests were showing ~5~7KBps.

If you check around the internet for people that have actually been throttled, not just those that were told about it, you'll verify this to be true.

Tmobile's "unlimited" plans are pure horsecrap. You can drink as much water as you want. Oh yeah, we're going to turn down the volume so you can only sip a little bit after we think you've had enough.

I have unlimited data with Sprint and have never exceeded 2GB of usage, with tethering and heavy data usage. If you are telling me that you regularly exceed 5GB, then you need to quit acting like our site is the problem with your data usage, because it obviously is not.

As Greg said we do our research and theres nothing further to explain to you about our decision. You do not pay for this site, nor do you have any involvement in the upkeep, yet you keep questioning our judgement on this matter. I have not seen a single valid post from you since you resurrected this. Instead all I see is complaining that NICO uses up too much of your 5gb data plan, so we should implement something to accommodate you on that.

So once again, its not happening for good reasons and theres nothing left to explain. Thread over, no more questions.
