Ray I'm pretty sure that's the same drive system but it's not the same mower. This part rarely fails though, but I'd check it when you look it over or ask if he's checked it. It's at the rear of the mower and it's basically a double pulley with a tensioner that moves as you put more pressure on the pedal top go faster.

Personally, I'd probably push mow it, especially if you can get (or have) a self-propelled mower. They make life a lot easier, especially if your lot is flat. YES, I know it's a PITA, but so is stressing over a freaking mower. ;) If you're always gonna live where you'll need a mower, save up your money and just buy you a good one when you have the money saved up. I push-mowed an acre+ for years. Still would if we had grass.

I disagree. I have had a self-propelled mower for 3 years and honestly it's really no easier than a regular push mower to use. I borrowed my neighbors regular push mower when mine was down one year and it actually was easier to mow with. Self-propelled mowers spin more than they actually pull, unless you have perfectly level land and mow it very regularly. Mine is pretty flat and my self-propelled sucks a**.

If you can afford it Ray, take it from personal experience and do it right the first time. If I factor in how much I spent on my self-propelled and how much I spent paying someone else to mow my grass due to it getting even slightly out of control, I would've saved a lot of money just buying a rider in the first place. Like I said yesterday, the off-season is almost here and there will be good deals everywhere on nice mowers.

Mornin!

I agree, it should either be a ride on or a push. The self propelled ones aren't worth the money, especially if you already have a push mower.

Nothing wrong with a used ride on imho.

So I think i've found a bike that I really want. Honda CTX700 with the DCT(auto trans):

Image

6spd Dual Clutch Auto, with 74hp. Also pretty reasonably priced, which is another plus.

I do like the NC700X too, but I prefer the looks of the CTX:

They're going alright here.

Its a bummer to hear man. Both of my grandparents died last week, but I can't say that I really knew them so its not quite the impact that spending the past half decade with must be. I'm really sorry man.

My 'rents had a decent self propelled back in the day, but Florida is crazy flat. Granted, we had a couple of gullies, but they weren't the end of the world.

After talking with the lady last night I think we're going to do a combo of all three.

We'll go to check out the mower this evening or tomorrow. Depending on if that pans out and how spendy we're feeling we may get it.
If we don't, the mathematical argument is the following:
$80/mo for mowing service split 3 ways is $26/mo each.
At $80/mo, it would take 7 months to break even on hiring a service vs. purchasing the $550 used mower; assuming it doesn't need repairs during that time.
However, the season is almost over, as Chris mentioned; approx. 4 months left.

Ultimately, its cheaper to continue having a service provided through the season. In the mean time we can be saving for a new mower.
At $26/mo for our collective time spent sharing the chore, the equation becomes a 'whats your time worth' argument, and $25/month is definitely a value when compared to the time that I personally want to spend mowing.

That is a sweet looking ride right there sir. I've never driven an auto, bet it's pretty cool. Almost reminds me of the Vmax.

Just looked at them online, ugly if you get the full front cowl. The one you linked is MUCH better looking.

I agree. I saw the one with the cowl first and it reminds me of a Goldwing. I love the black and matte black on it.

I watched a video review of the DCT trans and it's really neat. It has a manual mode too, but especially being my first bike I think the auto would be great. One of my friend said I would be a puss if I got an automatic motorcycle, but I seriously don't care. If i'm buying a bike, I want to feel comfortable and safe on it.

Ray - It sounds like you've got a good plan there. Trust me, there are weeks i'd rather pay someone to take care of it and not even worry about it. A rider takes away most of that stress though, so you'll be happy once you do get one.

Recall on 2014's.

Otherwise, that bike looks pretty cool and appears to have a really low center of gravity. I do like that its a neat looking cross between a cruiser and a sport bike. It'd probably make for a pretty fun commuter. Is that what you'd use it for?

Yeah it would pretty much be a commuter during reasonable weather. I want something comfortable, that I don't have to lean over a lot on and that gets good fuel economy. I've been toying with the thought of a bike for a long time and I may still change my mind, but initially I was just going to buy another project car. I've always had cars though and I kinda want to try something different this time, plus the fuel savings would be really nice. I also love the open air feel and the wife hates it, so I don't really need a car to enjoy that. I'd rather get a car later on when we actually have the room and the funds to build something and enjoy building it.

Meh, other peoples opinions usually suck. I hate when someone says something ignorant like, "ahh, if you don't get this, you're a pus". If you're not taking it on the track, a manual isn't required.

I'm a big fan of doing what I want and an even bigger fan of telling people to go F themselves.

I have a YFZ 450 quad, it's a monster. Fast as hell and wicked fun. But I drove an automatic Polaris awhile back, was just as fun and it was a far better trail bike than mine.

You know Brian, when you move to PA and don't have the funds to start rallying Chevettes with your buddies right away, lawn mower racing can be a really, really fun alternative.

I already have a quad and a go-kart. Both are substantially faster than a mower!

I'm all about the DIY fun man. If anything I'll build a few more go-karts out of salvage yard stock and rebuilt motors.

Agreed. I typically rebel anyways. I don't like buying what everyone else does, I like doing something different.

It's funny, because my boss said something similar. He was like "Who gives a f***? Are you going to race it or ride it to enjoy it?". He said he'd be all over an automatic one and he used to sell Honda's.

Speaking of go-karts and ect - i've been thinking about trying to build a single seater buggy or go kart. I've always wanted to build a rock buggy, but not one of these insane ones like everyone else builds. Something smaller, with maybe an old 4 banger in it or something and Toyota pick-up axles.

If you can weld you can build anything. All you need is a cheap 110 mig welder and you can build just about anything you can think of. You'd be surprised what you can pick up at the salvage yard dude. Motor's and whatnot are ultra cheap as well. My neighbor was trying to sell an old Kawasaki 500 motorcycle awhile back for $200. That would have made one hell of a fun kart motor.

Heck an old 5hp briggs is fun on a kart.

Nothing like a few friends racing go-karts through the woods man. When I move up to PA I hope all of you guys come visit. I promise lots of fun, from guns and karts to beer and steaks!

We can even mix beer and karts!

I can't even imagine Ben. I went through it with both of my parents and it was hard enough with them. I knew she had been battling cancer, but I didn't know that it had finally got her. Keeping you in my prayers man. We're all here if you need anything.
