Is that to me? If so, it's road worthy now. It's just not track worthy. It also needs suspension, sitting on 165k stock suspension and bushings. So they all need to be swapped out. Needs paint. Radio is inop. Sunroof is inop. Needs tires. 4th gear sync is trashed.

When I move up to PA I'll be doing a lot of work to her. Might lose the KA in favor of a 350 or LSx variant. Not sure on that front.

Morning guys...

Mornin' Guys!

Looks like we can finally go out car shopping next week. The refinance on the house is done. I expect that a new SUV will be sitting in our driveway by next weekend. Most likely a RAV4, since the wife is still hung up on them.
frapjap wrote:However, you can do what I do with the T/A and Subaru and leave the Mobile 1 filter on there inbetween oil changes. The filters say 12 or 15k, something along those lines so after 6-7k miles I only drain and replace the oil. It really is too bad Fram is the only company with the 'sure grip' tech. Its pretty nifty.
I don't take that risk. New filter and oil every 10k miles max, but usually I only go 7,500 miles if i'm running anything less than Mobil 1 EP.

Actually Purolator filters have the sure grip stuff on them too, or at least they did last time I used them. I typically use gloves when I change oil anyways, but the filter is never easy to get loose so the sure grip stuff is handy. I usually still keep a filter wrench in my trunk toolbox anyways, just in case.

I've been slacking in the Q when it comes to oil changes. I think I'm at like 8k miles (can't remember when I did it last), although I used Castrol synthetic so it's probably good. I've been buying whatever's on sale.. I just scored NAPA brand synthetic for $3.39/quart which is amazing... I've read some pretty good things about the NAPA brand synthetic and for that price, I'm happy.

Realistically, at 212k and living in Indiana, the car has probably about 2-4 years to live regardless of miles, because with all the winter driving it will probably rot out before the engine stops running, so I'm not as picky with oil changes as I was when I first got it.

When it comes to putting oil filters in, I always just put them in hand tight so I can get them back out with my hand... I've never had any leaks or issues, and they only need to be on tight enough so that the gasket seats properly...

The BMW eats 7.5 quarts per change, so I go to 5000 miles before I change it. I never go more than 5k on any vehicle, regardless of oil type. I also install them hand tight, little oil on the seal and a good twist using "german torque".

I use whatever is cheapest within reason. I will only use Castrol, Valvoline, or Mobil 1 though. NAPA Synthetic is actually rebranded Valvoline SynPower though, so it's good stuff too. The only thing I hate is that it doesn't hold the standard 5 qts, so no matter what special I find, I have to tack on an extra quart. I wouldn't have anything to do with a BMW that holds 7.5 qts though unless it was running Amsoil.

I put all of my filters on hand tight as well, but I always keep a filter wrench just in case. The last oil change in the 500 was the first one i've done on it and it looks like it went to Jiffy Lube last time... ugh. I hate Pennzoil...

I wish the Q only took 5 quarts, since it burns a quart during it's OCI so that way I wouldn't have to buy 7 quarts haha.

I can't complain too much. 6 qts isn't too bad. I definitely will take that over only being able to run premium fuel.

I got to drive a $1,000 car yesterday and I had a blast driving it. A buddy of mine picked up a 93 Ford Probe 4cyl 5spd yesterday and brought it by. I had forgotten how much fun those cars are and how cheap they are. It's a shame they're wrong wheel drive, but still a lot of fun for $1,000.

I'm surprised at how little it bothers anyone here that their cars burn oil (myself included). Eff it, so long as they're lubed.

Those Probes are rockin' cars. Too bad it wasn't the GT.

Went to another food plant today, wasn't too impressed. Came home, sanded my new to me exhaust and its sitting in primer waiting for a coat of black.

Whats on the ballot after the Q is gone, Wes? A G?

Yeah who cares if it uses a little oil.. if there's oil in there, it's way more expensive to mess with it than to just leave it and add a little here and there. If it's not leaking, then who cares.

In BMW land, on the old ones, it actually says in the manual (I believe) that it's normal for the car to use 1qt every 3000 miles.. Even 1 qt every 1500 miles isn't outrageous for those, but like all the guys here get all bent out of shape that it uses oil....

After the Q, I'll probably get another Q. The only suitable replacement for the G50 in my book would be an M56(x)..

I usually don't worry about a little oil consumption, but I'm going to have to do something with my Mazdaspeed Protege. It's using at least a quart every 1K miles and it keeps fouling out the #2 plug and ruining it. I'm pretty sure the oil control ring has failed on the #2 cylinder. Plus it smokes A LOT when you first start it in the morning sometimes. It's REALLY embarrassing.

Mornin' folks. Why does Monday have to be here again so early? I feel like my weekend was a waste thanks to the weather.

I went over to my friends house yesterday and we rode 4 wheelers all over his farm, and I started my "muffler gutting" project on the BMW.

A day that consists entirely of power tools and power machines is a fantastic day in my book!

Deidra and I were pulling the rear axles from the Impulse and she was all like, "Air tools are like cheating." Well duh! Breaking axle nuts by hand sucks donkey balls.

Festering donkey balls might be more accurate. Work smarter not harder...damn Navy types! Air/power tools ftmfw!

Whats your muffler gutting consist of Wes? I'm about to cut out the kidney silencer and half of the mufflers themselves next weekend on mine. Should lose about 70lbs in the process.

Basically I'm taking out all the baffles and making it a straight thru design, but I'm doing all this to an OEM muffler.. Guy on the forum said it sounds really nice.. I got a set of mufflers in really nice shape for $100, and the cheapest exhaust for the M coupe is like $600, which is ridiculous. A lot of the cheaper exhausts make the car sound like a rice mobile too.

I would take a proper diameter pipe and have it welded to the flanges. Make it a test pipe with a cat shell.

Depending on the amount of work, I'd probably just buy a new muffler. The 5 series exhaust, at least on the E39, is stacked with extra weight. From the headers back the exhaust is really nice, then it merges into a semi X-pipe only to connect to a gigantic kidney shaped silencer with a single out. After the kidney the mufflers themselves are retahded. The first one has no output, just serves to silence and add weight. Then there is a friggin weird flange inbetween the real muffler and the "fake" one. As if you were merging another pipe, but it's just plugged.

So I'm cutting into the exhaust at the single pipe point just after the initial 2-1 merge and running a new single out to the functional muffler. The rest is getting junked. I'll weigh it after, should be quite a bit of weight reduction, FTMFW!

Holy crapola that is a pretty intense exhaust system. I could definitely see why you'd want to hack that up and change it out. On the M coupe it's a pretty solid design, pretty basic dual all the way back. Most people just replace the rear mufflers with something else, but lots of people complain about drone.. I think my Q is borderline too loud, so I don't want two epically loud cars. Plus, the M doesn't have a lot sound deadening, and if you think about it you sit a lot closer to the rear of the car than in most cars..

Drone sucks, so does too loud. I can't drive my 240 without the silencer inserted in the muffler, just too fcuking loud. I'm not 20 anymore...
