She couldn't give a good goddamn about treats. Or affection. Or toys.
So, we got some training lessons and we've been training her like a hunting dog. Its helped immensely because she's learned that WE'RE the pack leaders, not her; which is why she was exhibiting what we interpreted as bad behavior. Since stepping up as the alphas, there has been no more pulling on walks (regardless of which leash I use), she'll pee and poop when and where I tell her to (~85% of the time), she'll run with me for as long as I want her to (within reason), does 'sit' 'stay' heel' 'lay down' and 'quiet' with hand signals and/or verbally. Grooming and baths are simple now. However, since we are the alphas, she submits more than ever, doesn't whine as much, and comes looking for pats, affection, petting, etc and will lay her head on the couch to ask for permission before being invited or denied the invitation.
Shes very good on leash and even off leash in an enclosed area- house, small yard, tennis court- but as soon as its a baseball field or big back yard (like mine) she gives you the middle finger and is off. I've been working with the mega leash and a pinch collar, but shes still not getting it 100% because we can't provide an effective correction from 15-30feet away on that thin piece of nylon rope thing.
We're not violent to her by any means, but the e-collar will take the place of the pinch collar. There is an electric fence at the lady's parents house and though the battery is dead in the collar, she never tests the geographical limits. The dog isn't dumb by any means and she'll likely adjust and learn very, very quickly. My hopes are to start with just the vibration and then nick if necessary. I'd rather use the vibration as a precursor to what will happen when she chooses not to be obedient. I don't expect it to take very long at all to train her in off leash.
I wish I had dobies. I'm considering getting a Brittany to have for a running companion and enjoyable pup, but don't want to start with a puppy- pain in the a**.
