Despite what the NRA tells you, the vast majority of firearms-related crime involves guns that are in this country legally and were at some point, traceable. Guns are frequently stolen in home and retail invasions, laundered through pawn shops and unscrupulous gun stores, and a through a hundred other ways cross the line into black market territory. By correctly addressing the legal ownership and posession of firearms (not to mandate, but to regulate), you reduce the number of guns that end up making their way into the hands of those who use them for illegal means. It doesn't stop the problem, but it substantially reduces the frequency of occurrance. You make guns less available to the common thug criminals and the price goes up, which means they can't afford them, which means they are less likely to commit a gun crime, which means they are less likely to commit a crime at all (since there is a ton of evidence that many crimes are crimes of convenience, and posessing a firearm is enough to turn the pro/con ratio in favor of commiting a crime by reducing the likelihood of resistance by the victim and repercussion to the perpitrator.)
