i started her up today, just wanted to see if i can drive to a mechanics shop to change the transmission, but i couldnt get it to back up with the engine running or off, i tried pushing it back when on revese, it seems like it is locked in place, i even tried to more it forward with the engine on, and in reverse.... nothing, as if it is stuck on park.....

the rpm drops when switching gears normally as if the transmission is working, but there is no load (i dont feel the car wanting to go)

it goes forward though if the selector is on D, the problem now is that i parked the car front in, and i have to back it up to drive out

i'd appreciate your feed back on this

I've done that before also, and it's not that bad J30, just jack it up under a solid point under the car, and hopefully your driveway is relatively smooth, and you'll be fine! Good luck bro!

if you're paying to get your transmission swapped, the least your mechanic could do is give you a free tow

btw, have you found any drive shaft shops around you?

thank you for all your replies, i did find several driveshaft shops around here, but they are charging too much for the job (400+ canadian, for a regular one piece drive shaft), and they want me to get them the part that connects to the tt transmission so they can weld that into the new drive shaft

i know for a fact that it wouldnt cost more than 200 canadian, but the only place that does that is in toronto (5 hour drive, and no car.....looool), and they do supply both connections, and u joints

still thinking about it and shopping around, i hope to find something by next week

Just wondering, why are you having a shop install the transmission?

After doing the entire motor swap, I figured putting in the transmission wouldn't be that big of a project?

Also, is this just a normal shop? With a custom drive shaft, and TT motor in the car, make sure they can handle the job!

Just don't want to see some hack mechanic mess with your J30TT

Good luck man, and congrats again on building the war machine

i'm taking it to a shop because i need a hoist to check my work too, and make sure that everything is good to go, and dont worry guys, i'm not leaving her for a second alone with the mechanics......

the shop owner seems to be very nice, and it's a busy place

still shopping for a drive shaft for this week, i'll try to get the best deal in here, up to now, the cheapest i found is 400 canadian, i'll keep you posted

around my home i can get a drive shaft lengthened for bout $150. wich involves removing the center length and replacing with a new. same as if u just had the two ends. im sure if u keep looking u could find one cheaper then 400

ok i found a place that can modify the existing drive shaft for a good price (200 canadian), but again they need the drive shaft's connection to the transmission

i called the place i got the 300zxtt engine and transmission from, and they might have it (they have virutally everything JDM, i call it JDM heaven.....loool), but i'm just not sure about the size/length of the 300zx drive shaft in relation to the J's, if they are the same, then i'll only have to modify the tt driveshaft (stronger u joints, and a stronger driveshaft in general), so i'll be researching that next....

i'm also still not sure if the J's automatic transmission computer is in working order, as i have tried to get to the diagnostic mode several times, and it wouldnt run (A/T light stays off), but the A/T lights up for 2 seconds on start-up, i have no idea what that means, so i'll do more research on that as well before i change the transmission

well that is my update up to now, i'll keep you guys posted

th 300 shaft is really short compared to my M30, and im sure the j30 is even longer. the diamater will b decided by the driveshaft u give them to modify. i dont think that they would change that cause they are still using the ends and they are a cirtain size already. teh important part is when the drive shaft is assembled and new u joints used that teh TT part that goes into the trany is assembled on the end and not the j30's. if there is no dif in the length of teh new shaft needed fot the tt transmission, then u could jus remove the J end and add the TT end in its place

when u turn ur car on, all the lights should turn on breifly to show that all the bulbs are working. if u dont see one of the lights at start then it is cause the bulb is burned out, or wire failure. in short the 2 secs the light comes on is to just test the bulb. if there is a prob then its gonna stay on after the start.

thanks man, my updates up to now are....

i found out that the skyline transmission connection should fit the 300zxtt output shaft (not confirmed yet, but will confirm when i go to get the drive shaft), the place has a lot of JDM engines and transmissions, i'll check the output size of both the skyline and the 300zxtt

the drive shaft length is way off, i got the information from the service manuals of both the 300zx and the J's, the J's drive shaft is longer by about 20 inches, so a visit to a driveshaft shop is a must

trying to work out a deal with a muffler shop to get the turbo exhaust pipe and flange redone on the driver side (which currently is interfering with the steering column), they are not cheap, but still shopping around

i'm trying to get most of the work done by the time i leave the shop next weekend, i hope that i will be able to, i'm on it....

if u get the out put yoke from the 300 or a skyline (one that fits) u might b able to just take apart the drivshaft at the u joint and replace the J's yoke with the 300's. the shafts ive worked with are just held together by a few snap rings. pull themout and use a hammer preferably air type and push the u joint out of the drive shaft, one direction first then the other. im not 100% on the two yokes fitting the same but if u line them up it should be relativly simple to see. the length of the yoke and the diamater of the u joint hole is the crutial dimentions to look at.when i got my engine and trans, there was already the 300 yoke still in the transmission to keep the trans fluid in, they cut the drive shaft just b4 the u joint, so this is gonna help me when im working on getting the driveshaft to fit.

got a pic of what the peice of the drive shaft i have is.. it might help u see sorry cant really see to much of it with it still in the transmission. but if i take apart teh ujopint then ill b able to jus try and fit this one on my existing m30 drive shaft.i donno if itl work tho, jus gonna try it to find out.

thanks man, it looks a lot different than the auto, but i guess the yoke should be the same, again i'm going to be checking on that during next week when i go to get the driveshaft/yoke.......

ok she is at the garage getting the transmission changed, well it is costing more than double what i expected to pay, two major problems me and the mechanics are facing since yesterday, first of all, the transmission is a little larger in length and diameter (diameter is not the issue, but the length is), which is causing the transmission mount to not fit correctly and be off by about an inch backward (300$, only to change the transmission).......... the second problem is that (after a lot of calling and searching, i got the transmission output yoke that is bigger), there is no drive shaft shop in town that would accept doing the drive shaft, there is only Mr. drive shaft, and they are charging 450$+ for it (that is after some bargening)

i hope that this is the last time such an amount is spent unexpectedly, i'm nearing 4500$ Canadian total spending on the swap including the engine and transmission package, and i have not yet started with the intercoolers mounting (another 500 or so).... this swap better be good...... i need all the luck i can get, i'll keep you updated

hey drape, did you have a problem with installing the turbine revolution sensor???, it exists in the J's transmission, but there is no mounting place for it in the tt transmission, i'd appreciate your feedback

yes, they look exactly the same... i dont have a 300zx transmission mounting bracket but i've seen it a couple of days ago when i went to get the transmission yoke, could it be that it is the same as the J's but off by an inch??

and i have a question regarding the turbine revolution sensor, is that the sensor that calculates the RPM ???, or is there another one in the engine that does so

ok guys, she is back, but with 2 problems (one seems very major, but i cant judge yet)

i left the car at the mechanics shop for a couple of days waiting on the drive shaft, so the shop left the car outside in very cold weather.... we got it inside the garage today, and worked on the driveshaft, and finishing up the transmission work..... and once i fired her up, the oil light came on right away and stayed on (added oil, light is still on), that was very disapointing, i opened the oil fill cap, the RPM dropped, and i got to see the oil circulating over the camshafts...., so i thought it would be okay to drive home, so i did. when i got home, i realized that there is a sound coming from the engine, it is a squealing sound, it is not coming from the belts, it gets louder from around the top centre of the engine..... the engine didnt overheat (i drove it for a good 40 minutes), there is no knocking or ticking sounds, just a intermettent squeal that is relative to the engines RPM.... i would appreciate your input on this

the second problem is that the transmission mouting bracket is off, and the transmission is connected by one bolt on each side instead of 2 on each side.....

i'll have to go back to the shop to get the transmission mounted safely....but the oil problem seems to be major issue

Hey, i dont recall messing around with the transmission sensor.

about the oil light, make sure you have the stock j30 vg30de oil sensor, the 300zx has a different sensor (it measures psi) vs j30's oil pressure/no oil pressure sensor (idiot light)

if you have the TT sensor in there, it will show no oil pressure.

btw, i only have 2 bolts holding my transmission in and it worked great for months

hope this helps, good luck man

Hey Drape.. Do you know if people ever hook aftermarket oil pressure guages to the Z32 sending unit?

thanks a bunch for the info drape, the oil pressure sensor that is installed in the tt engine has a yellow connector and i found it to be strange that it is located on the driver side rather than the passanger side near the oil bracket....

everytime the engine was started prior to yesterday, the oil light never came on, i'm going to look into it more in details tonight

by the way, where is the oil pressure switch located in the J's engine?

ok sorted out the oil pressure issue, it ended up being a break in the switch wire..... i'm still waiting to install the vg30de oil pressure switch, probably by next weekend

the transmission is still not shifting correctly, i'll start by adjusting the TPS and take it from there

elwesso and me have been prepairing a little surprise for you guys, tell us what you think, i hope you will like it, i'll leave the rest to elwesso.....
