next question

my friend just bought a 92 hatch (woot woot), unfortunately it aint working though. The owner told him hed need a timing chain. I didnt get to get a look at it yet under the hood but he told me he took the valve cover off and saw some metal stuck in the chain at 2 diff places. One piece he was able to get out the other is stuck in the chain lower down. Any idea what it may be?

yeah, I know exactly what it is... NOT GOOD. I wouldn't attempt to run it with the chain like that. Time to start unbolting stuff. Have fun.

Don't know yet. You'll have to post pics of the mystery metal. Could be a chunk of the front cover, could be a random bolt someone dropped in there, could be a piece of a guide, who knows. The only way to find out is tear it down. You'll need to unbolt both front covers (upper and lower), valve cover gasket, take the cams out, unbolt the sprocket that bolts to the head, possibly drop the oil pan.

If you don't want to do all that, just pick up another motor.

Just a quick question. My buddy has a FWD audi A4, but the engine is mounted longitudinally. That was the first time I had ever seen it. Why is it like that? I am guessing it is cheaper to manufacture because they FWD drivetrain can be a very similar layout to the AWD version. Am I close, or way off?

I didn't think this deserved making a new thread about.

so, I know this question has been posted like a million times, but none of the posts i found in my search answered me 100%...I need to clean my '95's headlights, but I don't really want to wetsand it and screw it up...I'm comfortable with buffing compound, can I do it by hand and it work well enough to be worth my while? And will I need anything else before/after?

This is just a quick question. My 89 SOHC has a bad intake box and pipe. Do I actually need one? I realize my car will throw a code and that the MAFS does help meter the air so the ECU compensate for it by adding more fuel , but do I actually need to have it when running a stock application?

It will run like crap and possibly stall out if you have an opening after your MAF. Duct tape it if you have to (After all, it is an air duct). Anything before the MAF doesn't really matter, but you want all your air to be filtered.

I am removing my spoiler on my 92 240sx, and thers sum rust that needs to be cleaned up with all the holes from the spoiler. Should I take it to a body shop or can i do this myself and still make it look good?

Any tips, advice and opinions would be great

Depends on how comfortable you are with body work. I'm a total noob but I managed to remove the spoiler and cure the "cancer" while I was at it. I'm happy with the results:

Well I am a complete noob and this s13 is my first car ever lol. So I actually dont have any experience with body work but it looks like you did a great job no signgs of rust at all. What's the white outline on your hatch? Is that a reflection of a cloud? lol

There's a cloud in the window LOL but the outline on the hatch is from beginning to attempt a rattle can paint job and then chickening out LOL.

I was gonna make a thread but seeing as im already here and i love to post here.

Ive been noticing when im at a stop light in my 240. If i keep my foot on the brake i get a very slightly deeper tone from the exhaust than if i just let the car sit with no braking. What in the world is that about?

well.. in my honest opinion, if the rust is bad, I'd just source out a base model hatch, its 10x easier if you don't wanna go through a body man. You cant just fill up or cover rust, rust will just continue to spread. You'd have to cut out the rusted portions and replace with something.

the downfall to my method, youre gonna have to sacrifice the rear window wiper. :-/

Because when you hit the brakes, your are placing a load on the electrical system, which places a load on the alternator, which places a load on the motor. Your RPMs probably drop a little, and the load makes the motor work more, and is therefore slightly louder, kinda like when you are driving up a slight incline as opposed to driving down a slight incline.

just because a car is FWD doesnt mean the engine has to sit transversally. Acura Legends had a longitudinal mounted engine too, and they were never offered in anything but FWD.

Cool, didnt know that. What are the advantages to mounting a FWD engine the right way?

but they dont want to learn about cars... or do they.

As for the lug nuts.. why? They look cool and all but unless i find 100 dollars in the street i wont buy em. Plus if anyone really wanted they could just screw off the three that arent locks and theyd have a free set of 5 zigen lugs minus locks.

my first guess would be accessibility. transverse mounted engines suck for engine bay space where it matters.

as for the audis certain other cars set up this way, its to allow for the optional awd drivetrain to be fitted in the same body/chassis.
