root_locus wrote:Hi everyone I have a simple question about my brakes, I have a 1989 240sx.

I noticed an odd smell coming from my rear passenger tire, and the next day there was a grinding sound from the brakes. So I put the car up on jack stands, pulled the rear tires off, put the car in first gear and slowly let the clutch out and saw that the rear passenger rotor was struggling to rotate. Next, I took the caliper bolts out and took a look at the pads and not surprisingly one of the pads was completely gone. Here is some pictures:

I do not understand why the outer pad is completely gone while the inner still has lots of pad left, I would have expected the opposite to occur. Also, the piston has rips in the rubber seal around it.

My question is if this warrants replacing the caliper (and pads obviously must be replaced).

Thank you for any replies!
Yeah man, replace that caliper. Don't forget to pick up brake fluid, cos you will have to bleed your brakes.

I'm planning on using this car for dd, but I also want to autox it and plus there are tons of sharp turning mountain roads that I take all the time. I'm looking at either the Stance GR+Pro Coilovers that are 8k/6k or the Tein Super Drift Coilovers that are 10k/8k.
Go with the 8/6

short answer: put the web adress of the pic between the image tags (no spaces).

Quote my post, and when you do, the script will automatically come up, and you can see what you have to do. There is also a how-to I think in Gen Chat...

I'm almost afraid to ask...but how do I fold the rear seat down in my hatch?

I tried pulling and pushing the latches, but that damn thing just won't budge no matter how hard I try.

IIRC, there are 2 latches... and you have to pull both at the same time... mine (in a coupe) always comes right down. My prelude on the other hand is a gigantic pain in the a**...

Does anyone know which body kit this is? I really like how clean it is, but can't seem to find it anywhere . So if anyone knows of a place where I can also purchase the kit, it would be greatly appreciated :D

Don't hold me to it but I think that is a jdm 180sx front bumper, and considering it has the front liscense plate molding area(I have know clue what you would call it) it makes me more confident that that is what it is. Hope it helped if not sorry for the confusion.

Check your sway bar bushings and sway bar end links. Its pretty unlikely its the transmission mount.

if my rear brake caliper is starting to seize and outer rubber boot is torn, can I just buy the seal kit from courtesynissan that includes both rear caliper seals and all to rebuild it? Doesn't seem that hard. Has anyone done it? Stock non abs btw. Thnx

sure, go for it... just make sure there is no damage to the piston in the caliper. I've never done it.

What kind of SR do you have? Your O2 sensor will be somewhere in your exhaust... there may be more than 1, but it should be the only sensor in your exhaust (the only thing with wires going to it... about 1/2" in diameter)MAF should be on your intake, yes.

Dizzy... not too sure, I think the older SRs had distributors, but newer ones had crank angle sensor and coil packs.

Is the strut boot in this picture of a rear strut:

the same thing that advanced auto is selling in this picture?

Are those boots the same for the front and rear suspension? I cannot tell from my vehicle because they are all shredded. The description for all the boots on the advanced auto website all say either "Shock Boot; Left Front" or "Shock Boot; Right Front", so I am thinking that the front and rear boots are the same.

Thanks for any information!

front and rear boots are different IIRC... if you are replacing bad boots on stock suspension, you might as well replace the suspension as well, because its not far behind.

Try the SR forum for a pic. TPS= Throttle Position Sensor

Should be a sticker for R134a. Does the AC work?Stereo is a little more complicated. Is it a factory unit or aftermarket?
